This is a place for discussing flags and coats-of-arms. Doesn't matter if you want to do it scholarly or casually; doesn't matter if you're discussing flags of real countries or heraldry of Westeros, or if you're making OC of your own, this is a place for that.
To get started, you should probably acquaint yourself with the vocabulary used in vexillology and heraldry:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossary_of_vexillology
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blazon
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Achievement_%28heraldry%29
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Illustrated_atlas_of_French_and_English_heraldic_terms (very resourceful; Wikimedia has a lot of .svg that you can use for creating OC)

Taken from the /flags/ sticky:
>>how do you make those custom flags?
>Well, any image software would do. But this is one of the best tools to get started in flag-making:

Making History Mod Flags
I'm beginning a mod for Making History: The Calm & The Storm and needed to make new flags. I have to do about 50 in total from what I am planning and need new ideas. I can change the colours of each flag if I need to, but I don't want every flag looking the same. There are 4 types of government in the game: Fascism, Authoritarian, Democratic, and Communist.
Shitty IRL Flags - thread moved from /flags/
01/06/15 (Tue) 02:55:16 No.135
ITT: really bad flags that are totally legit, be it a country, city, organisation, etc.
I'll start with the newly established Eurasian Union (January 1st, 2015) and its shitty fucking flag. It's like they wanted to have their own EU flag and took blue and yellow, but they decided to give them that unique, Russian twist and made it look like shit. Also, see that Star Trek-esque design.
Socialist simple flags
I just started a project to make simple socialist flags. The common factor between the flags is, a simple use of the country/place olours flag and a main red element. i have decided to get rid of any other simbol apart from the colours itself to make it even more simple.
In the cases of Ireland and Canada, I decided to keep the simbols for recognizement purposes. For example, Peru has the same color scheme as Canada and the Harp is a universally recognized symbol of the Island.
Thoughts? Feel free to contribute.
New Zealand Flag Debate
NZ wants to give people the decision to change flags;
https://www.govt.nz/browse/engaging-with-government/the-nz-flag-your-chance-to-decide/
there's a lot of flags submitted, some decent, some terrible, some are meme material.

You should include this in the sticky.

Video-games heraldry and vexillology
Anything which interests you in video-games heraldry and vexillology?
Like Paradox games+Kaissereich, Arma or Freeciv, I liked Flags from there.
Here posted: Chernarus, Takistan, ChDKZ and Sahrani from ArmA II, popular game on certain German imageboard.
I'll also create distinct thread for FreeCiv (and possibly for Paradoxgame, if someone will want to post Flags in their format), as I'm interested in their flags too and how to do/replace them. I find some of their choices for fantastic heraldry/vexillology >>53 stupid.
Custom Flag
What do you think of my flags /vex/? What could be improved?
The Blue and Red one was my original flag that I had made for a made up nation of mine. It id the first draft and most of the mistakes have been fixed, like the 45° bars not being 45°.
The Yellow and Blue flag was a quick draft of a new nation. I originally had a dark red as the field, but used a complementary colour instead. I liked the emblem on the hoist area the most, but was wondering if it should be in the middle.
Ancient Greek "heraldry"
Classical heraldry starts around 1100 when shield designs became tied to noble lineages. But the practice of decorating your shield to make it recognisable is much older. Roman military units used distinctive shield markings. And Ancient Greek hoplites are depicted (both in contemporary and historic pictures) as having symbols painted on their shields.
Now, I know that Sparta used letter Lambda Λ (other name for Sparta was Lakedaimōn), and that Athenians used the little owl on their coins and generally as a symbol of their city. But, does anyone know of any other cities having their distinct symbols? Except for Spartans, there doesn't seem to be unity in what symbols hoplites had on their shields; were those inherited in a heraldic manner, from father to son, or were they completely arbitrary? I can't find a lot of useful info, maybe I just don't know what to look for.
Fantastical/Attributed vexillology and heraldry thread
In short, nations which never had chance of possessing a proper vexilllogy or heraldry, Coats of Arms attributed/proposed to some characters (like, how would a Western-style Coat of Arms of a Japanese Emperor looks like?), etc…
More here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attributed_arms we call it "heraldyka fantazyjna" (fantastical/fantastic/fantasy? heraldry)
Presenting some of my favourites, Babylonia, Etruria, Romania/Roman Empire (two variants, one used OTL by reconstructionist group, but I like their Flag) and (Old)/Baltic Prussia (used by modern-day reconstructionists of this language on the terrain of Kaliningrad Oblast and around).
Also, if someone HAVE saved most of those unsourced/uncertain origin Flags deleted from Wikicommons in good resolution/svg (like those of "Turkic Empires", previous set of Mughal Empire and others) PLEASE post it here, I can't find a way to find them now.
Wikipedia used to have many good flags which are now deleted, whereas shit like combining random flag with homo flag stays, I can't comprehend this.
I redesigned the flag of a city I live nearby. I'll try to get it officialy changed but first I want to know you're thinking about it /vex/.
Pics related, the first one is the current flag.
The second one is what I made.
The third one are the Arènes de Nîmes, the symbol of the city.

Board Merger with /flags/
Does anyone know who owns >>>/flags/ or how can I contact the board owner?
I was thinking we should probably merge the boards, probably also move threads over (I'm willing to do it manually, 4free). Currently it's up for claims but I don't want to just go through the board claim system, for two reasons: 1) it would be a pretty dick move, 2) from what I heard the claims system isn't very responsive, partially because the claims get buried in hotwheels' spam.
Hello /vex/, I was wondering if you have the long image that contains all the flags used for 8chan. I need it for reasons
Actually, I need it because there has been some talk on /intl/ to use regional/state flags (ie first-level administrative flags) instead of country ones.
So for that, I'd need the long image (to attempt to edit, even though I have no idea how), someone who knows how to replace flags for specific ip ranges and someone who'd like to make 3200 or so state/provincial/regional flags
