On left is a nice rip-off of Fatimid banner (Caliphs loved to use one-coloured banners for some reason), on right is a flag that manages to have a good and distinctive design that manages to keep true to rules of vexillology, yet still looks pretty bad in the end.

It's a tough choice, but I'd say the old one was actually better. Put an emblem of some kind in top hoist corner and it already looks like Soviet or Chinese Communist flag design-wise. Benin had a similar flag (with a red star) 1975-1990 during its socialist years.

Flag and emblem of People's Republic of Benin (socialist emblems are an interesting topic on their own, as they more or less follow their specific design rule set, parallel to heraldry)

Indeed, the Gaddafi's flag was somewhat more original. The current one looks like a mix between the pan-African flag and the ottoman empire.

I'd like to point out that this heraldry is not the original one, as you can see on this statue in Cotonou.

I couldn't find any official depiction, so I'm stuck with Wikipedia's rendition. Though, "heraldically", it is a correct depiction, as all elements are there.

It's not that bad.
