there's a free to play rotation, you're able to play a selection of heroes automatically, regardless of whether you've bought. the selection changes every week.
and gold is free, you get it for levelling heroes and finishing games
the only real p2w function is stimpacks which increase exp and gold income for 7 days which is basically free gold for real money
