<The addition of new abilities and units became commonplace, from Space Marine Sternguard Veterans, Eldar Fire Dragons, Chaos Raptors to the Ork Flash Gitz, finalising in the introduction of an entirely new faction - the Grey Knights, based on Bloodravage’s Destroyer 40k mod – all designed from a competitive PvP angle.

Gone through most of the campaigns in Ancestor's Legacy. I would recommend

>Viking campaigns

>Ulf and the raid on Lindisfarne. Teaches you the basics of the game and of how to control Viking units, really good infantry and decent siege. The other one is Rurik and his quest to establish a dynasty for his Varangians, Vikings that sailed down the Dniper and Volga to the Black Sea and set up shop there. Drakkars down rivers in russia, sounds crazy but it's true. Rurik dynasty lasted 400 years by the way, one of the longest in Europe.Ivan the Terrible was direct decendent and the Romanovs had Rurik blood through Catherine the Great.

>Anglo-Saxons and their eternal battles for the throne. Saxons themselves get heavy infantry in Huskarls and have a strong economy. No cav, unfortunately. First campaign is Edward the Confessor. Basically fighting to preserve his crown and Harold Godwinson waiting in the wing till it's his time in the second campaign.

>Edward dies, leaving no heir. Witan were going to choose Edgar Ætheling, but settle for Harold Godwinson instead. There are two other claimants to the throne however, William the Bastard, who is Edward's cousin over in Normandy and Harald Hardrada, the king of Denmark and the "Last Great Viking", he has a connection the Cnut the Great.

>Teuton Campaigns are kinda ehh. Heavy and slow infantry with good Cav and crossbows. One is dealing with Raubitter and setting up the Hapsburg line of Kings. The Teuton one is how they conqured the Slaves in Prussia.

>Slavs though. Oh, Slaves are something special. Kinda weak infantry but their archers are the best, Cav is pretty good and they get mounted archers. Send in weak shields to pin infantry then just rain arrows. First campaign is about Mieszko I. His father tells him to unite the Polish tribes and he goes from a simple chieftain to bickering with Germany to being Baptized and laying the foundations for what would be Poland. Fun fact, the 1945 borders drawn up of Poland more or less match the original territory Mieszko I carved out a thousand years earlier.

>But Mieszko I was still not a King. That would fall to his son Boleslav, named after Mieszko I's Wife's Father. He wants to be King badly and his son, Mieszko II, acts as narrator as he butchers Rebels, Germans and Varangians before taking Kiev.

>He gets his wish, with both the German Emperor and Pope dying, he gets recognized as the first king of Poland. He dies 2 months later. Mieszko II would be the one to transform the state but also lose Kiev to Yaroslav, and generally lose more territory as the dynasty advances.

>Last are Saracens, weak infantry, Hessassins are specialty units, Cav is decent and explosive slingers are pretty awesome. Campaign is ehh, taking Jerusalem from Christians is a good map but it's a bit heavy handed with the Allah and Infidels and stuff, compared to the other campaigns that are teaching you actual fucking history. Plus I already played this in AoE 2.

So that's Ancestor's Legacy, Viking Campaign to get your feet wet, Saxon and Slav campaigns recommended, Teuton and Saracen if you want.

Really learnt alot about 10th century noble figures from this, so that's a plus.

DTA news post

they've been making MP maps because you faggots decided to start playing it in December

>DTA Spring Update

>Detailing what's been happening since our last news post. It's been a while.

>So, we hoped to deliver a bigger update with maps, singleplayer and co-op missions by the end of last year. As you know, that didn't happen. The biggest reason for that is that near the end of last year, our multiplayer community got far more active. During the last half a year, it hasn't been a rare sight to see 20 players online simultaneously, and more people have been talking about DTA and organizing games on various Discord communities. As a result, we've actually been playing our own game instead of only creating content for it.

>While spending time on playing, we haven't been all inactive when it comes to updates. We've released 14 updates since our last news post. With the active PvP community and our participation in hundreds of games, we've managed to gather feedback and implement a lot of competitive balance changes. We've also added new multiplayer maps and our usual stream of client and game engine updates as well as new terrain has continued as well.

>Speaking of multiplayer maps, multiple players from our active online gaming community have also got interested in creating maps for DTA. Flippy, Tiberius and TrainStation have all made some pretty maps within the last couple of months.

>During Easter we also released the "Bunny Hunt" special mission, which has gathered a lot of praise. Despite being an Easter special it's still available, so go play it if you haven't already! While DTA's missions are known for being hard, I made this one lighter than usual so everyone could have fun in it.

>While our gameplay and balance have been in a good state for years and we've also improved them greatly within the last year, we've identified some more ways to make our game more interesting. We also haven't forgotten the plans to create more singleplayer and co-op missions. The work that we did for them prior to our multiplayer community exploding is still there, and we've been continuing it, with some missions already finished and more under development.

>So while we've been rather lazy with PR work (or too busy developing and playing to do it), which involves writing news posts, there's been a lot happening behind the scenes! Expect to see a major update with significant gameplay changes and new missions later this year!

Haven't got up to a mission with a new faction yet but have played for a bit. Abilities are now assigned to the F keys instead of just 3 slots next to the portrait, makes it easier to use abilities. They extended the cooldown for the heal spell, much to my annoyance as going healer is what I usually play as.

There are also 2 Mercs that join you in game and work like Pawns in Dragon's Dogma in that you can swap them out. Considering I'm a healer, Yria is an archer and the other Dark Elf is a mage, I made both melee. Can sign in with an account and play co-op if you want. Not me though.

Also, one of the first side quests you do:

>You play as a general who's regiment got slaughtered. Given a second chance to take over the Wolf's Guard after Tahar.

Investigate a mine with Former Purity soilder have been living in. They've been keeping prisoners alive however.

Make my way to the leader and see she has 4,000 health. Protag can make the claim that they killed Tahar but the leader is screaming it wasn't them. I let them go and while Yria says not to, protag says "Everyone deserves a second chance."

I suspect that's going to be a reoccurring theme throughout this.

Too bad you only get one collector who collets like 1 echo every 5 seconds or so. Humans are the least fussy, can just spam Iron, get Keepers, Champions and Catapults and stormroll the enemy.

/vg/ doesn't allow tor posters to upload files and I can not make a good post without files but whatever here it is.

The game's basic version of the lore goes like this: there is an immortal race named Kohan created first byhe creator and all that stuff and they have three or four forms I forgot and from these forms fucking around with mortals sprung humans, elves, dwarves and orcs but the game names them differently. Kohan's immortality comes from their amulet and these can be corrupted. It is a classic good versus evil story basically.

Your basic units are companies with captains (these can be Kohans or mortals) 4 frontline which is composed of the same guys and 2 suppport which can be different units. You command companies not invidiual figures up to six companies can make a regiment with a saved formation. Companies formation affect their attack and speed and the terrain affects defense and speed. Company hard limit is 20 so you can always be focused on the macro.

Resources(stone, wood, iron, mana and gold) which you can get by city buildings or mines don't accumulate apart from gold. You can have negative or positive incomes negative resources cuts your gold income while positive resources does nothing. Each company depending on it's compositon will take resources from your income stream.

So the game ships with a campaign and some standalone maps and a pretty good random map generator. Since this is a standalone expansion the campaign is really hard so I am not going to torture myself again by playing it.

You can control how you wanna play pretty extensively and there are speeding and slowing options in game.

You can play without bots or humans so it is possible to expand easily against indie cities and lairs or make an AI league.

If you couldn't tell I am a fanboy so don't expect me to be subjective.

fan site where you can find mods, maps and utilities is here: http://awakening.chimaerica.com/portal.php

it doesn't have a https version sorry.

This is a really shitty post because of no pics or webms but I said I was gonna do it and I always deliver or at least try to. Feel free to ask questions.

The game has four factions Royalist (cavalry and buffers) Council (archers and healers) Nationalist (economy and debuffers) and Ceyah (skellies and zombies) apart from these factions the three non-human species only have indie cities and you cannot build any more of them. Lairs and capturing enemy cities can you give technologies depending on your starting options. This is all I can think of right now.

cartoony isn't really the issue, it's the taking something simple looking, that's typically from a time where graphics weren't as good and they had to make due, keep the shit aspects of it and hyper detail the rest of it. but it's like they do this for new designs as well so you get some shity designed tank right. this wasn't really the issue with dow3, everything looked off in that but gameplay was the main problem with that game. warcraft 3 was fine because they had to make due and they succeeded in a rather comfy feeling aesthetic.

It's a terrible design choice. My interest in C&C was piqued specifically because it was modern warfare with a touch of believable high tech that looks different here and there, not kirby's fucking dreamland.

C&C TibSun and TibWars were the apex of this design. Vehicles and infantry all look, sound and animate like they're actually supposed to be tools in an army, with a spin on conventional armor and armaments that actually look cool.

And then you have the clown cars and meme machines from RA3 and the likes.

Nah RA2 was already cartoony, but it was bearable. RA3 just went full saturday morning cartoon. The tutorial with the talking tanks alone left me baffled. The only designs I liked from RA3 were the Shogun Executioner and the Reaper, the latter specifically because it's a walking hunk of shit that breaks down a lot, which is expected of russian engineering, but even then it looks like a toy in-game.

I honestly think RA3's design actually came about with the OG concept art for generals, like they were CBT'd by westwood and then given greater control for RA3 but still had to follow comity market researched check list so they figured "lets just vaguely make everything look like a Kirov". the reason why I think this is the case is because alot of the soviet vehicles have those shark month designs on the front from planes, but the thing is that's obviously from the kirov and that's the only unit in the game that's pretty much untouched design wise. >>137103

I think the anon shitposting about Red Alert being Reddit Alert a long while back might have been on to something. For all everyone loves to circlejerk about RA2 I really fucking hate the unit design in that game. Everyone takes the wrong lessons from RA2 as it's the gameplay not the art style that makes it work. Trying to remember a video a while back, might have actually been a Westwood video funny enough, but the just of it was about unit design and the point it raised is that you need to know by looking at something "Hey it looks like a Tank so it must be a Tank!" to make your units translate well visually. RA2 unit design borders heavily towards breaking this rule in some aspects, especially considering the jump from RA made me never take the game seriously.

>>137101

Considering the concepts Westwood had for Tiberian Dawn and other games I really want to know who was at the office during the early days telling them to tone the fucking shit down? They obviously left by time RA2 was rolling out.

I think it was the music for Red alert 2. I enjoy the designs a great deal but I can tell half of it is rushed while the rest is pretty much just lacking polish, what best it did was give blue and red more then just stripes, it's the hue of the grey that's the colour of the metal on every unit.

I think it was less someone telling them to tune it down and more the art just took so long that whoever designed things realized cutting back would actually allow them to release the game.

Unlocked Titans, which is neat.

>Got a Synergy Skill, which is a skill unique to two schools. So I'm a light mage with Beguilement for Auras, so I get Verdict which is a AoE magic spell. I chose to Synergise with the Druidism school as that has close ties to Light magic and also now renders Kaiawu irreverent. Light + Druidism gives me a safe area to heal up in but is kinda worthless to be honest. Druisism and Begurilment gives me Song of Tempest however, which deals 250 magic damage to any enemy near me. I've been formulating ideas for an RTS. what I've come up with is this.

America accidentally nukes Russia, everyone nukes everyone else as a result. not much is left after this but enough survive and they band together to form one mega city called Cradle, which was built upon the remaining country that wasn't nuked because no one cared about it Africa. what's left of the remaining religious organizations conglomerate into "The Word", they have lots of different beliefs on how to do things and argue all the time but the one thing that unite them is that they all agree everyone who died in the nuking of the world that wasn't their time and it wasn't god's plan that it happened. so they figure they'll fix the mistake and bring everyone who died back, the planet it's wild-life included. they succeed in finding a method to achieve this, they learn that DNA contains the genetic memory of every single person in their family line and that they could simply clone the people who died their memory would be fucked but it's better then nothing. however they soon realized that because alot of people died, whole family genetic lines were completely gone, so they just began cloning everyone they could in a desperate bid to make them breed the people who were lost.

During this time the labs of The Word were sieged by Trans-humanist Watcher neo-Aristocrats Techno-junkies, TWATS, Who wanted to takeover who should be brought back and to also purge the family lines of all they considered immoral and racist. the aftermath of this battle wiped out all but a few living members of The Word so they went into hiding while the TWATS grew in power, fractured out because they had no enemy to focus on and became absolutely encapsulated on their internal conflicts that they didn't realize they had created a war economy that saw the rise of the Super-Wealthy's return.

Before the world was nuked all the "protect the best of us" contingency plans pretty much every government set up saw the 10% of the stupid wealthy rich escape the nuking of the world on giant flying sky scrapers into space. now that there's money to be had and monopolies to be made they've come back to reclaim their birthrights. Naturally now with a focus to attack the TWATS band up together again like they were all best of friends and nothing happened with knifes still behind each others backs, some turned traitor for the Super-Wealthy others fell but this conflict saw the TWATS getting knocked off their high horses and the rest of Cradle into more conflict.

The people stuck in the middle of all this bullshit got massively fed up with this crap so they formed into Guerrilla forces and went about surgically striking key leaders of whatever they figured was the cause of the war, after a few liberating pastry stores and pen factories they became satisfied with just keeping the peace as much as possible on the streets and engaging whatever forces that were fighting each other at the time. this brought about a lot of mercenary outfits who were hired on to basically do the job of the police and other dirty works. 100 years of little conflicts and people slowly realizing maybe killing each other over everything is a bad idea saw peace talks trying to be negotiated by the now more Uniform Guerrilla forces "Peace Libre" into actually finally ceasing all hostilities between TWATS, Super Wealthy and everyone's mercenary groups. however just as the signing was about to begin "The Word" came back, they archived in their goal of bringing everyone who died in the nuking back, however they failed in bringing them back alive.

Millions of The Word's undead Crusaders jihad'd the peace talks leaving nothing but strange lamp posts which project a sickly light forth. No one really knew what happened so everyone figured everyone betrayed everyone so the nice comfortable status quo of all out war returned and everyone was miserable ever after.

I figure the single player is open-word RTS that you play as a mercenary group you can fully customize and you can play them how you like, research neat shit to outperform others or just hire units from any side or do both. build a pretty base and do missions for the various factions that come your way, no real narrative, just tit-bits and generated missions based on who controls what part of the city and how each side feels about you.

065a82  No.137267

>>137259

every faction requires materials and power but each faction has it's own mechanisms and special resources.

"The Word" doesn't have buildings and instead they erect emitters that produce a zone around them which allow necro-preachers to spawn units, the greater the zone doesn't necessarily mean you'll get more out of it but if that area had alot of fighting in it, then you'll get more out of it. they combine their units to make better units or units that do certain jobs.

"TWATS" have one centralized building that you have to build upon and upgrade but their main thing is social standings whatever you build/upgrade gives social standing to the different subfactions of the TWATS, meaning whatever group you please the most will decide what units you can build. so if you please the chem-heads more you'll get chemical based units and if you please the electro-jockers more you'll get electro-based units.

"Super-Wealthy" special resource is money. everything costs it but also everything generates it. they can't just build a base they have to buy the land first, buying land is the only thing which scales costs but buying land allows you to buy your buildings that produce money and produce units. moving your units costs money. however you can sell your units to people for money as well which gives line of sight on the units sold.

"Peace Libre" salvage everything, whether that thing is destroyed or not doesn't matter, if they can take it they will take it. they build scrapyards which all the salvage goes into but the way they get new units and better stuff is by building certain structures next to their scrapyards something of a adjacency bonus but more practical.

Mercenaries have to get contracts inorder to expand their operations, they start with a business permit that's used to take over an area of neutral civilian buildings. then as they do certain things simple things they get more permits to turn neutral buildings into unit production, resource generators, laboratories. they can contract their units out to other players to get more permits or contracts, or hire other players units for a time at the cost of permits or contracts.

Aerev was a General stationed in Empyria from Nortander. He/She had been there for awhile and had been passed over for promotion by another General who just sat on his arse. To get that rank and return home, he/she devised a plan to lure Orcs into a remote village by saying there was a Treasury below it. There, he/she would ride into battle, sweep them away and achieve glory and fame. Unfortunately, the Orcs attacked early, killed the men at the outpost and at the village and the only one to survive was a General who blocked the memories with amnesia because he/she couldn't bring themselves to remember.

I guess the question is, does Aerev deserve a second chance? With helping out Nortander in his/her new position in the Wolf Guard, is that enough to undo the guilt?

Message here is that absolution is determined by yourself. The Torment Aerev has been through is self inflicted as a means to make sure she doesn't forget what happened. But learning to accept your sin, that… that's what will take away your suffering.

God Planescape: Torment was really good. It's writing was good but it's themes and messages were best.

>Queen thanks Aerev and the reason why she picked Aerev for the job was "These who are broken know best how to mend."

Well, she got her second chance.

Overall, is pretty good expansion. There are now 5 races in skirmish and playing co-op might be fun for someone. Story was pretty good as well, even if Tahar was soul siphoned off-screen. Music is well done as well, relaxing tracks for downtime and stirring stuff for each race. Negatives I'd say are the few bugs till present, bugged quests are always an annoyance and the original campaign had boatloads when it first came out. The caravans missing is just weird as they included roads on maps but they're just decoration now. Another thing is just general lore stuff is missing, I know a bit of the world but not having a Codex to know what all this is doesn't make me immersed as well as I should be. Other than that, pretty solid expansion.

I have to say I like the combination of RPG and RTS, it has this autistic mix that pulls me through the campaign. Use heroes outside, equip them with good items to use as a scouting party in an RTS map, build army to expand, combat enemy, get to next story point.

Not sure how to make it work. Two things I could think of is either going for Paradox grand stratedgy, where you just do whatever the fuck you want, or some pseudo-RPG route, where your "main character" is your (mobile?) base and your army, and you can do missions to gain more units, techs or more bases. Maybe something like Earth 2150, but more complex.

Played the original for a bit. Gotta say I like 3 alot more seeing how… simple 1 is. Gameplay wise you can't place down structures usually where you want as the game auto guess where for you. Combat is a bit simple as well in just mass units and advance. Can't even see more detailed information on the units. One thing I do like is the Runeboard however, you pick up heros, units and blueprints then put them all on this board so you might find LV 5 humans that are better than your current LV 3 elves.

Lore wise, oh boy. Now 3 is a prequel and probably a good idea. The Circle Mages became corrupted (Poor Yria) and shattered the world in the Convocation trying to become Immortal I think. The different Mages scrapped together a race or two to serve them and use a Rune to call humans/other races for combat the same way commanders call in robots in SupCom. Remember that Rune that Isgrimm found? I think that's connected somehow. Heroes are like Kohan, in that they lose their memories on being killed but can get called again to fight.

It says it's an RPG but I still don't understand a lot, I think 3 has alot more in terms of fluff than 1.

Oh Gods… Everyone of Tahar's companions became a Circle mage. They're also responsible for discovering the source of magic, the Archfire and starting the Convocation by trying to become gods. The Fial Darg tempted them and eventually escaped from his seal. The seal Iron Falcons guard where you recruit the keepers in 3. It just makes me sad that I got to know the characters like Isgrimm wanting to study the rune, Gor wanting more power, Ianna using it to augment her dreamweaving, Uram drinking power like he does souls and Yria trying to hold them all together and maybe use it to bring back Tahar. The circle was strong while Tahar was alive but now that he/she is dead, the cracks are already starting to appear.

Damn, the lore is more consistent than I thought. Also Isgrimm isn't some milksop like he is in 3, he's a proper dorf.

Guardians are the Gods. Tiara = Humans, Elen = Elves, Niethalf = Dwarves. Hybernians were an empire that existed in Nortander roughly 270 years before 3.

Second Tiberium War Update 2.2 (Wintertime Update)

>A refined and updated version that fixes several issues and brings better balancing with new maps and an extended Tundra environment.

>Version 2.11 Wintertime update brings many balance changes and bug fixes as well as new maps and several overhauls to existing content. I focused more on the Tundra assets which were not as extensive in Tiberian Sun as the Temperate assets and ensured map makers have an smoother experience with a new ordered editor list. Also game play balances and game "feel" is as always my focus as I slowly bring out the best in the Tiberian Sun game mechanics.

>New Super weapon Icons

>Tundra Environment Overhaul

>Tundra maps have always taken a back seat in Temperate maps due to the limited assets available to them. Not anymore, all city structures including skyscrapers, lamps, billboards, barrels, and even mutant buildings have been converted over to Tundra maps allowing for a good fight in winter time!

>New Maps

>Having a more variety of skirmish and multiplayer maps is something I constantly address to make sure each multiplayer game and skirmish match is unique and fun.

>Refined Original Maps

>Several Maps including missions have been updated and balanced to ensure a top level of quality and atmosphere. I do read comments and ensure that any bugs that are brought to my attention are addressed.

>Graphics Updates

>Color and clarity is very important, so I have gone through units and structures to make sure that everything in The Second Tiberium War fits together is aesthetics. I have also improved some weapon effects such as the Obelisk of Light and veteran Raptor tank laser.

>Scaled Infantry Option

>You now have the option to enable scaled down infantry which is far more realistic. Just open up the Scaled Infantry folder and place ECache02.mix into the MIX folder and your done!

2 is the game that everyone played and had a lot of good campaigns to it. It also was simple to play overall in the grand scheme of things and you could play the game like a city builder which is appealing to quite a number of fags. 3 has huge glaring problems that no remaster will fix without a complete overhaul of the game. 1 is kind of a game nobody ever got to play really.

I gotta confess I like AoE 3 > 2. That sense of adventure at discovering the new world, combined with rapid changes in technology. Gun powder units and learning about 20 different native villages you encounter. Different European nations having different units all together, just a different look and feel to each other. Then Sioux and Iroquois added in the Warchiefs.

They nailed the theme of discovering the new world and I can overlook stuff like Home Cities and Mercs.

>macrointensive vs microintensive

Not needed, and would be hard to balance having a fight that ends with 20 units winning vs 60+ units of the same unit-type but of a different faction due to micro. Either go one or the other.

>Hero units at all

Remove. Arguably not needed even in microintensive games: see Starcraft BW, AoE II, C&C.

Give specialist units unique to each faction instead, while everyone has access to basic infantry/antivehicle/scout/tank/arti/air options avaible at all times with differing utility, cost, stats and counters depending on the playstyle of said faction. The hard part is making everything effective at what they're supposed to do without overshadowing another unit completely.

>Critical positions on the map (lmao single map) giving out bonuses are faction locked

Trash design, all factions should be able to mine out and deny the enemy resources while getting an advantage themselves, map control is dictated by where you can expand to obtain more resources in nearly all RTS games that matter, outside of obvious chokepoints and strategical positions, which is where you place units and not defenses. If you can't expand where your enemy is and deny them, what's the point? You're only wasting units for something they'll eventually be able to obtain since you can't move into their shit and plant your ass down to fortify it because it becomes a drain of resources with no direct gain ecowise.

The simpler it is to make the economy work, the easier it is to make maps for the game too, so consider that too. You don't want a game that, outside of the singleplayer campaing, only has 8 skirmish maps on release and therefore dead on arrival, right?

Everything else is either "can be worked around" or "good" depending on who you're asking. Tech paths is a bit iffy if you just do it on a dropdown menu or buyable as unit upgrades, instead of being a choice of an actual physical structure that the enemy can destroy to deny said tech. Unless you can just have it so you select which structure you construct from about five of them that all give different tech approaches for each faction but would block you from building the other tech structures at the same time. Would be a great alternative to having subfactions for the two main factions and would add reasonable shifting dynamics to the game.

Again, do as the old ones said once before; "make it simple, stupid".

>units of the same unit-type

You're assuming the factions are symetrical though

>Give specialist units unique to each faction instead

Yeah, for the Aliens I was thinking more on the vein of how Red Alert and Generals do it

Not so much "heroes" that can tank everything but as unique single units that can still be squishy if poorly handled.

For the humans I was thinking something in the vein of the British Lts and Captains in CoH

>Unique to each faction

Anon the whole point is to make each of the 2 factions unique with all of their units being unique

>map control is dictated by where you can expand to obtain more resources

Think, 6 resource points in the middle of the map, 3 for each faction, 3 on the right middle of the map and 3 on the middle left, the closest ones to your base can't be captured or destroyed, but can obviously be denied from the enemy, this would force expansion as you deny the resources from your enemy and you're a grasp away from grabbing capturing yours while doing so.

It would force you to expand to deny resources and then push hard to capture those resource points and end the enemy wih them making somewhat of a battlefront and enganging you in battle very early without a need to constantly scout.

>Buildable building tech tree

Sounds reasonable, should you be locked to that tech path even iff your building/s are destroyed or otherwise?

>AOE3 campaigns

I like the campaigns on the base game, however they made it garbage when they put 'bittersweet poverty ending' and 'muh injun hurretage muh ebil white man and shit' on Warchiefs and ending the Black Family story right there, even worse for the AD Campaigns.

I have a few basic ideas/summaries on how to make at least the Warchief campaigns less bad instead of what everyone got so bear with me:

Warchiefs

Act I

>Instead of Nathaniel Black, (You) get to play some lowly chief with a very smol injun tribe (Iroquois) just getting by hunting for platypus pelts and shit until you accidentally stumble upon some sekrit plot by rival injuns wanting to assassinate some bigshot injun chief, then blame it all on some very brand new ebil white man tribe called the USA because they lost during the War of Independence by siding with the British, and of course having some certain sekrit business pacts with the bad guys from the vanilla campaigns (Circle of Ossus)

>You will play throughout Act I throwing a wrench at their schemes, ruining their ebin plan for complete continental saturation.

>Final mission will have you fight the Circle on a remote location in a LEGENDARY battle no one has heard of (featuring an appearance by Nathaniel Black), defeating the bad injuns (and their partners from the Circle whom they easily outnumber everyone including their injun allies) in the end while being best friends with the flegling USA and other injun tribes

>By the act's epilogue you will behold your newly found injun friends join your little tribe, America making themselves more American everyday, Nathaniel Black and his Falcon Company became prosperous instead of becoming poverty stricken from his business with your tribe, while (You), your now hueg OC tribe and injun trophy wife ride off into the sunset to found some town somewhere in the South and lived happily ever after because I like happy endings that's why :^)

Act II

>Instead of mixed race edgy emo injun, You are a young, recently appointed injun chief with your tribe trying to eek out a living doing business in a certain town 'somewhere in the South' by hunting prairie dogs for their pelts and shit in order to keep your smol tribe of Sioux injuns from not ending up in some reserve or getting scattered and then absorbed by other tribes only for them to later on act like hostile savages causing trouble all over the countryside just because they got a bit more numerous.

>Suddenly the American Civil War breaks out, your humble prairie dog hunting party and some of your business partners (including an OC character distantly related to the Black Family by blood) that you run into by chance got caught in a large skirmish between a shady-looking raiding party (dressed as Union soldiers) and Militiamen fighting for the CSA trying to fend off a 'Union Army Detachment' seemingly heading for their town.

>You will spend time playing the early parts of Act II fighting off slave traders, mercenaries, rogue soldiers up North and Southern traitors down below, and finally genuine Union Soldiers led by a corrupt Union Officer who is secretly commanded by a bad guy in the form of a seemingly ambitious and shady-looking entrepeneur who, for some unknown goal, is hellbent on capturing the town, put all of your tribe and your injun friends living in said town up for sale at all costs (and then failing at it). All the while your tribe grows stronger along with your business ventures and the friendly injun Town (Home City) your tribe now lives in.

>The middle part of Act II will see you expanding into neighboring regions while fighting the bad guys coming from up north and from down south while the Civil War rages on, with some injun tribes either as allies or enemies in between.

>Then you will have a showdown with the bad guys' henchmen; first against the Slave Traders and their goons, what's left of their friends in the Union Army (who were outed, kicked off their job and now on the run), highly paid mercenaries from the South and elsewhere (spies, rogue csa soldiers, mercenary spaniards, assorted natives from Central America, rival sioux tribes and other injuns).

2/2

>Later parts of Act II will have you pitted against The Circle whom that ambitious shady-looking entrepeneur turned out to be a leader of, his true motive is basically wanting to restore the Order to it's former glory after suffering from Amelia Black's shenanigans back in Act III of the original game, and in order to do that he intended to capture the town, sell off the injun prisoners to the slave market, take whatever valuable loot they could get and either use them for their own or sell them to the black market for moar shekels, and most important of all; for the humiliating defeat they suffered in the previous Act at the hands of a certain LEGENDARY injun chief and that bringing the injun Town 'that accursed chief' built to ruin and dishonoring his people through enslavement serves as a giant payback for what (You) did to them.

>Final mission coincidentally takes place on roughly the same remote location The Circle lost the LEGENDARY battle in Act I, the only difference is that you're playing as the Sioux instead of the Iroquois, and that you have the Confederates AND the Union Armies at your side (along with Mr. OC Donutstehl MacBlackins and the Falcon Company) while the Circle only have pretty much what is essentially almost all of their personnel operating in the New World gathered in one place; the location in question will have more than half of the map covered in White (The Circle's color) to reflect their manpower in-game. Naturally you will win the final mission because you're the main character :^).

>Act II epilogue has you seeing everyone going off their own ways; sometime after the 2nd LEGENDARY battle the North and the South made a temporary truce, the remote injun Town became a large, prosperous but still remote town in due time, the Black Family's Falcon Company became more prosperous than ever from their business venture with your hueg OC tribe, the injun Town, and their blood relatives back in England Scotland.

>since emo injun doesn't exist in this plot, Amelia Black has a nice stable family; married to an Irish dude, gave birth to blonde and red haired children with an injun bro for a grand uncle.

>And what remained of The Circle left America for good and after landing back in Europe, scattered themselves never to be heard from again, or so it seemed.

>Assuming factions are symetrical

But they're not, you already stated

>tanky and costly vs spammable but easy to use

Or do you think (((GDI))) and Nod are symetrical just because they both have tank options? Even SC:BW is like this, Main melee infantry unit zergling/firebat/zealot, Main ranged combat unit hydralisk/marine/dragoon, etc, etc. They don't have the exact same unit unlike AoE II but they do serve an equal purpose with differing stats, cost, behaviour, adquisition rates and use depending on the faction that uses them.

I would agree if we're talking about something alike Total Annihilation where, despite each faction having differing stats on unit types, they all act the same and they all feel the same, making the binary faction choice just flavour because they both feel the exact same until you use Air units as Arm or Adv. Kbots as CORE. But this is ultimately beside the point because we're talking shifty goddamn space aliens vs a military that wasn't ready to fight them but din't get annihilated.

The point is that to achieve good asymmetry, each faction must have unique units for each of the most common unit options, eg: Reg infantry, Anti-Vehicular infantry, Scout/Harassment vehicle, Main Tank, Artillery/Anti-Structure and main Air unit. Naval if it would apply too. Anything that doesn't fit this description you can play around as specialist units avaible for each faction that the other doesn't have, either through the tech system or through combining types or making specific counters for something the other army has.

>Map Control

>only 6 actual points for expansion with only 3 contested by the enemy and 3 the enemy has that you can't take because they don't give you resources

Disencourages skirmishing or aggresive expanding, because you don't gain resources out of attacking them and settling your ass down there so they just don't expand immediatly after your army is repurposed against some other threat on the map. Do you turtle and blob? This is how you incentivize turtling and making a horrible deathblob like in (((SC2))), where the maps for 1v1 have so many expansion points and both players start so far away from eachother, it's too easy to expand and secure resources to not die making for boring ass games unless you cheese or rush the enemy.

It's terrible design for a game about asymmetry when the maps are just uninspired symetrical shitholes that sound like they're made for an esports tournament rather than because they'd look cool (C&C) or because of strategical importance of locations (SupCom/TA, CoH, DoW).

Again, the simpler you make a resource, the easier it is to allow mappers to make complex maps that are fun to play in, breaking the monotony of playing skirmish a couple thousand times on the same damn map, or style of map for (((some terrible games))).

Also, nothing will ever disencourage or prevent scouting because it's damned fucking important to keep tabs on the enemy. Infact, you saying this about scouting while wanting to have a faction that "relies on macromanagement" tell me you know nothing about what macro actually means, OR you do and you just want to spam a singular unit type all day because you'd never bother to scout the enemy to counter them because of TERRIBLE linear mapping forcing them to come through one way only, reacting only to change what you're producing if you're severily countered by the enemy after the first engagement. I'm saying this because i've encountered hundreds of players who had this same mentality over like 5 different RTS games and they all were noobs who din't understand an inch of how each game was supposed to be played.

And before you ask about your MS Paint drawing, it literally doesn't say anything about how the map is going to play out when it could be mapped like Pic related 1.

Fucked will you be if you make it like Pic 2 because that just makes people sit on their bases instead of risking expanding and getting instantly crushed by the enemy army on their way there.

Example 3 would be how like, a normal person would make a map for this style of resource locking, because it makes sense but it could be better if ALL points could provide resources for all players.

Talked with a friend who's played Soul Harvest as well and he told me where the Arsonist and Halbadiers went for the humans and it clicked, they got rid of them for some reason. Arsonists were useful against buildings for humans in 3 and Halbadiers did piercing damage for a melee unit. They also lowered the cap of units that could be produced, as recruiting a normal infantryman in 3 got you a lot of 3 instead of 1.

Uhlans were best Horse unit imo

Absurd amount of damage, low cost and pop and high speed make it ridiculously good against anything.

Now some anons will tell you that doppelsoldners and wagons were the best german units, but those anons are mentally retarded. While Wagons and Doppelsoldners are actually really good units, they're both high in cost and pop and are absolutely useless against the more OP factions.

For example try and attack Ottoman army equipped with Great bombards, try and attack Portuguese with an organ cannon wall. You'll die. Sure Wagons can have absurd amounts of health and can actually tank Great Bombard shots, but even the most retarded Ottoman player will understand guarding their great bombards with shitloads of anti-cavalry units makes them unbeatable. Doppelsoldners are only good against heavy cavalry factions like France or horse indians, but due to their high pop and low speed you can only have a few of them and their only purpose is guarding or eliminating that fort in the middle of the map (because the AI is retarded).

Now Uhlans on the other hand are useful in almost any situation except navy and some siege (still better than nothing). And even while they'll die like flies to some of the heavier units, their cost is pretty low and the economy in AoE3 is easy.

See that Ottoman army walking that great bombard up to your base?

Attack it from 3 separate directions with pure Uhlans and watch as they cut a line straight to the enemy artillery. If it doesn't work a first time send even more uhlans A single Great Bombard is significantly more time costly than 50 Uhlans (implying you have at least 4 stables + forts). Age of Empires 3 end game is all about troop production times rather than resources (on account of resources being endless), and thats where the Uhlan shines. Being able to deploy an army quickly is one thing, but being able to deploy an army quickly thats both extremely fast and high damaging is ridiculous. I have in some matches intentionally killed off half my Uhlans on the other side of the map just so i could reproduce some more in my base against and attacking army. Not to mention if you gather enough resources you can literally send a stream of uhlans to an enemy base and their are very little strategies that can stop them due to being unable to counter attack. I mean seriously, defending against Uhlans is easy, but trying to send anything from outside your walls is never going to work and thats if you can stop the uhlans that are attacking your walls from almost every angle. Uhlans are so numerous and quick they can attack from any direction forcing enemy players to split up their forces in multiple locations. Meanwhile a single cannon is all thats enough to break through the walls and thats if the Uhlans can't get through.

The only factions i think that can counter a uhlan siege are China (which is absurdly OP) and Iroquois (less OP but still ridiculous for a fucking native). Chinas got low pop hand mortars, flying crows and fucking flamethrowers which devastate melee units and their walls have ridiculous health. Iroquis has Manlets, who suffer from small world syndrome and are pretty much the opposite of the Uhlan. They're slow, ranged, extremely tanky, infantry that cost 1 pop. Its like the irresistible force paradox. However when combined with cannons you end up being forced to change your strategy. Those Manlets will hold the Uhlans out meaning they can easily use the ottoman strategy in a way that counters the Uhlan. Uhlans simply don't deal enough damage against the Manlets, Manlets don't deal much damage but don't need to due to Uhlans having low health. The iroquis cannons are subpar compared to western cannons but they can still pack a punch. They can also get imported French garbage making them almost unassailable. When this happens you will need to get units that aren't Uhlans (Doppelsoldners).

I just want some king/ruler simulator dammit, where you can plan and build beautiful city kingdom, expand, plan out supply/trade route, make outpost, decide tax rate, while at the same time have a fleshed out military/strategy mechanic with enemy kingdom to fight, barbarian, bandit, or just criminal to keep a watch on so the game not end when you make the perfect city.

anno is just too damn shallow, easy and the city building progression based on some stupid consumption.

Have you ever tried Grand Ages medieval?

Its heavily focused on trade routes and making good money of them

Dont remember about setting taxes and buildings in towns are pretty limited same with the military, but the map is pretty damn huge and it does get a little bit easy after you have set up your primary production chains and got good trade routs going

>Making webms

If you use webm for retards and don't select bitrate it has a nasty habit of selecting absurdly high bitrates vastly inflating file size larger than it has to be although in some larger recordings it actually doesn't use enough bitrate

As I rule of thumb I tend to go up in 128 incriments for every 45 pixels of height.

Starting at 640x360 I tend to use 512 bitrate

720x405 I'd use 640 bitrate

800x450 use a 768 bitrate etc

If I was doing a 1280x720 file I'd select 1024 bitrate

Now this isn't far from a perfect system but it is a relatively simple and foolproof system that will get you a decent quality and sized webm 9/10. There will be many instances where you can get away with a much smaller bitrate especially when using VP9 and High Quality mode, but you will need to tweak around with those.

Another hint I can give is that if you move around a lot that makes it want to eat up more in filesize.

Anyway back to Age of Empires and I honestly think Act I is boring as shit. Worse still, the whole shipment mechanic doesn't quite work in this chapter as it kind of requires clairvoyance on what to get. It kind of forces you to neglect sea units for most of the campaign till last mission when suddenly ships are super important hint, they are not and you are faced with a boring slog against endless waves of ships unless you spam Lancers and Mortars Lancers unironically make all your other units you got redundant as they are the only unit you got that is worth a shit

You know that's a good question because I found AOE III maps TINY! I'll look that up after I finish posting these images.

Story Cont: So after blowing up the Fountain of Youth and making you think you are now playing Age of Mythology, you get to move to Act II playing as the mutt grandson of a Scottish knight who has become a hired hessian with his mohawk butt buddy. Not sure what the inspiration for this is, probably Last of the Mohicans, but at least you get fucking gunpowder units now so you aren't fighting with two hands behind your back hopping on one leg.

Till you find out the Cherokee hotheads are better equipped than you are so once again you are the underdog faction unless you start hiring Mercs then it becomes hilarious as you watch Landsknecht lay waste to entire armies

For whatever reason this game has huge problems with sound cutting out which gets really annoying. It's not even consistent as well as sometimes sounds will play and other times it won't.

And I still hate it. Lemme just give you a scenario here of the first mission.

>Start out in pretty nice area.

>4 rangers to scout with.

>Early game is okay. Can clear low level mobs.

>Expand to get 2000 pop. Doing pretty good.

>Mob of 5 zombies attacks my rangers, due to their shit attack rate, one dies and I move the other 3.

>They attack tents I set up close by.

>They roll like a snowball of death and I basically quit.

<Why didn't you build any walls.

>Couple of things. 1, population goal on that map is fucking 400. I had 30 tents set up and only got to 200. Each tent by the way gives +2 actual people who can work, meaning something as simple as a barracks takes 4 fucking tents. Oh but of course you need all the infrastructure in place first, one hunters hut that gives +15 food so the tent consumes -6, you need stone, wood and electricity. And then you can only build rangers and ONLY THEN by waiting 30 seconds can you get another shitty ranger.

<2 Why didn't you just build any walls you noob.

>Yah, hello. See those massive train tracks running directly next to my HQ, where my rangers were standing guard because the zombies came from there? Yeah, Can't build a wall over tracks or like some AoE 3 maps where there's a gate for some reason.

<3. Why not just build more solders?

>Because I only just got my barracks up AND I could only recruit rangers at this point in the game for some reason.

Look if I fail, I want it to be for my own reasons. I didn't produce enough units, my enemy had a better Eco, I wasn't a bastard and used Onagars on Black Forest even though we said no siege and so he counters by turtling and building a wonder.

This, this I feel like you need an exact fucking set up just in the early game, because if you fail there, it's small cracks in a support beam that holds up the snowball of death.

I didn't put two hunters hut on that forest line, therefore I don't have enough food, therefore can't build more fucking tents. Which means no more damn troops and AHHHHHHH. I just feel like the game punishes you, then kicks you and says it's your fault your 4 rangers couldn't hold off that assault of 5 zombies.

rangers can deal with abit but you're not wrong in that it's usually rng that dictates just how well you do without any means to counter act this rng. there's always at least 4 to seven different paths into your base, if you do not get snipers or the mech by day 20 you're basically lost by 40, building placement is important but you're always limited by gameplay reason means. there's more shit with that awful game that I'm failing to mention too.
