I know it belongs on /meta/, but I feel you guys actually would have an interesting opinion about it and nobody reads /meta/
On mootland, /vg/ was extremely useful and possibly saved /v/. However, on 8chan, it's ultimately useless.
Think about it : why wouldn't you simply make your own board ?
You can start several threads if you feel like discussing very specific topics (for a /ks/ board you'd have a fanart thread, a "rin is bas waifu" thread, etc., for a /lol/ board you'd have "who's your main", "new dunkey/lilypichu bideo", etc…), you'd have a wider and possibly clearer vision of the entire subject, the possibility to sticky stuff that deserves more attention than the rest, and mods ready to delete shitposters specifically, especially ones "aware" of the "subculture" of the place (I never went to /smtg/, yet I'd assume they have their own "jokes" and "memes" and whatever that are relevant to someone who visits the place's knowledge).
Also, you would have a better idea of how important and big the community regarding the game is. If one doesn't have a very big following, then the general would've died anyway, and /v/ is still the perfect place for it in this case.
So I'm wondering why a /vg/ board is necessary at all.
No.2500
It's not ,I'm surprised people didn't make specific boards, I guess they're lazy neets
No.2504
>>2500I think it's mainly because people don't really visit boards that aren't a single letter or two. They're not featured, and from what I've seen besides a select few they're pretty much barren.
No.2533
not only are specific boards for one topic within gaming not neccessary, the entirety of /vg/ is not neccessary.
/vg/ was only created on halfchan after it's population increased exponentially. threads here stay on the catalog for a couple of days already, so if it's bideo game related, it should be here, IMO. Fucking naruto ultimate ninja general or whatever.
No.2542
Well… so three replies, all of them agree, so 100% of /vg/ agrees.
Seriously, though, I'd advise anyone who's part of one of the generals in here to wonder if creating a new board would be a good idea it would, and see who'd be willing to create and organize/mod it.
In a way, /vg/ could serve the purpose of discussing how to manage/create boards generals.
No.2578
A board for an individual game would be wasteful and pointless
a /vg/ board allows one to find a general for their game of choice easily and with little hassle
having boards for each general would splinter them and make unecessary effort involved to find then
a /vg/ board is useful and good
No.2641
the traffic is too slow here. /vg/ was originally created to split the general threads off from /v/ because it was clogging up people's front pages with activity. If the people don't mind their threads lingering a bit with slow replies, it's fine
No.2644
>>2542How about a board for discussion of franchises in general? Basically any popular "general" thread could be moved there if wanted.
I.e. exactly like /vg/, except you expand the subjects to anything. So you could make a Dark Souls general, Lego general, Disney general, Adventure Time general…

No.2751
>>2461Own board versus thread on an aggregate board is a balancing act of visibility and sustainability. /vg/ as it was gave an almost perfect balance allowing both 20-a-day ASSFAGGOTS generals and 1-a-month niche game generals to coexist under the same board with plenty of newcomers being fed in from casual browsing. Having newcomers flick through the entire boardist to find discussion is not going to work unless you're happy with an immortal 1-post-a-month thread.
No.2756
>>2461It's useless right now because the site is still really in its infancy. There isn't as much traffic. When the halfchan destroys itself (and it will) then we'll see more traffic and, hopefully, more of a reason for vg to exist.
No.2810
>>2461I'm one of those people that browse /vg/ from time to time to discover new games and get info on them.
Also especially since traffic is still slow, regrouping generals is a way to ensure activity on the board.
It can also be sort of a landmark for halfchan refugees.
No.2873
>>2810To be honest I browse both the /vg/ here, and the /vg/ on halfchan. I know that
evacuating to a different site is very very hard to do, and usually done slowly, so I kind of see what's what on both sides.
No.3122
Since the split on halfchan, "no generals allowed" has seeped into /v/ culture. In all honesty with the amount of traffic 8chan/v/ currently (doesn't) have, I would like to see generals stay on /v/ like the pre-split days.
As for creating different boards for each game, there are two problems. Moderation and Visibility.
If you want a board you have to be willing to moderate it personally, most people don't realize how much of a commitment that is. You can't really trust the board to self moderate and even if you can you have to check in every week to keep the board from getting deleted due to no mod.
As for the other, how do you help people find your board, especially those with only a cursory interest? 8chan isn't all that big yet to start with, less than 10k unique IPs. Trying to direct enough traffic to actually even keep one single general thread going is difficult, but a whole board of threads? How do you plan to reach those people so they even know your board exists? Worse, what if they make their own board for that game because they can't find you or didn't know to even look?
No.3143
I agree with OP.
/vg/ was created so that generals didn't clutter the first page of /v/
/vg/ Isn't needed now, probably in the future but not now.
