I wouldn't mind a cool gimmick if it wasn't so expensive.

faddcf  No.48228

>>48220

The problem is not the price, the problem is that they try and make it mandatory, changing games to suite it. RE7 was made FPS just so you could experience™ it in VR. If it just stayed some fringe gimmick like the rest of them it wouldn't be an issue.

523260  No.48276

tried VR it was ok for flight sim I tried

even then it's overpriced too much and some genres I imagine won't work so well with it such as RTS. I can see turn based working though like some fire emblem clone where you touch your character and move them like a chess piece.

If you did more research you'd have noticed they've tried this for absolutely fucking ever. It has failed every time. This isn't something new.

>>48278

A lot of games recently have started patching it out, yet for every game that patches it out some other tard falls for the VR meme and wonders why their game fails.

16d864  No.48338

The problem with VR is not the price. It's the same problem wii-like controls had.

No one wants to look like a fuckwit, waving their arms around like a retard.

Not to mention with VR you are willingly blinding yourself. Something that your brain does not want to happen. What if a predator sneaks up on etc etc.

Plus, you can't look away to see who's at the door.

As for the video, notice how all these cool VR experiences all come from demos and presentations, or just from fucking around. Sure, it's cool to pop the glasses on and fall from a skyscraper for 5 minutes or something. But that's about it. It's not something that can be incorporated into a normal game without changing it to adhere specifically to VR, turning the game into a VR demo again. It will always be a gimmick.

gotta find the right genre, yaknow? then you gotta narrow it down to the right sub-genre. then the specific scene type.

then after you narrow it down to 20-30 scenes, then you have to watch those scenes and narrow it down.

and thats if your sub-genre/scene preference doesnt change during any of that forcing you to start over.

cmon, you know the drill.

>>48568

maybe watch the whole video? you kind of just recited the point of the entire video.

but despite all of VRs shortcomings, theres still something about being "in" the game thats appealing…

i personally cant see it ever replacing video games. the same way videogames cant replace hunting/shooting/camping.

but that doesnt mean it isnt worth the endeavor.

There are some games that use inverse kinematics to "guess" where the rest of the body is and show it in-game, but I would say that's less immersive. Often times, the arms don't follow yours, or they're always bent at a weird angle.

right now VR devs need to focus on whats fun and what works. if cutting things that come at you with a sword like in the video is actually fun, theres alot you can do with it.

a baseball game focused on batting is similar.

devs need to figure out that stuff before attempting to make a game, otherwise you just end up with a ~$5 minigame.

a89c57  No.48767

i agree. i think they did it because its easy. they wanted cutting to be a factor, but cutting implies the sword has an edge, but the "blade" the player holds has no sharp end, theyre all sharp ends, so the devs went with lightsabers… then matched everything else to it.

the game made me instantly think of a star wars themed fruit ninja.

I'm surprised that anons hate vr as much as this thread suggests, it's niche, has a high cost barrier of entry to keep most normalfags out, and it allows for new experiences where indies have a better chance to thrive since it isn't saturated with AAA bullshit, though it isn't completely clean from it either.

Got a vive just recently after consuming every available piece of information on all the headsets available so I'll try to collate all of my knowledge on it in this post. Prepare for wall of text though I'll break it down into sections.

>tech

I would say it is definitely worth at least trying. The technology is ready unlike in the 90s and the controllers are tracked so well, unlike the wii, that waggling isn't really a thing. While with the wii it was so awkward to do it properly that you had no choice but to waggle and hope for the best, that is not the case here.

>feel

The thing I really didn't expect was the scale of things. If your avatar is small, you don't feel small, everything else feels big and vice versa. Horror is one hell of a drug in this thing too. It's a real shame it doesn't record well. You can't really do the stereoscopic thing without actually wearing the headset. The tracking of the controllers is as close to perfect as they need to be convincing and feel natural to move. It's definitely not a party thing because you do look like a dumbass with it on but at the same time the internet means you can be alone in your room and using it is still social. Not having to abide by the laws of physics is a very strange experience that is highly recommended. Sticking your hand through something sometimes gives the physical sensation of dipping your hand in water which is something I really can't explain. Lifting food to your mouth and having it get virtually eaten (some games do this) also sometimes feels like it's touching your lips.

I don't know how it does it but even knowing that it isn't real isn't enough to stop your brain from thinking it is.

>space

Fags living in a wardrobe can do the standing/sitting only thing or do like I do and flip their (double) bed against the wall and use that ~2x1.8m space as your play area quite easily.

>windows mixed reality

The WMR headsets are cheaper by a few hundred dollars but they have some major drawbacks. You can't adjust the distance between the lenses to suit your eyes. They're all locked at 63mm which is small considering the male average interpupular distance is something nearer 72. The vive and the samsung WMR can adjust the distance but they're both about the same price. With the lenses in the wrong place everything is blurry even if you're looking straight. When they're adjusted properly you can look around with your eyes a lot more instead of only being able to turn your head to look but the edges of your vision are still blurred because of the shape of the lenses. Probably the most appealing part of these at a technical standpoint is that the tracking cameras are built into the headset so you don't need to set up the lightboxes in the corner of your room like with the vive. You'll still need a clear play space to avoid tripping on things but you can effectively walk wherever you want with them. They require bluetooth to link the controllers to your computer though whereas the vive links them to the headset itself. They are also windows 10 exclusive. Everything else is windows exclusive though so linux doesn't get support here no matter their choice. The occulus had mac support in its development builds but no longer does. WMR is not compatible with every game - budget cuts for example you can't throw where you're aiming. There is support but it's not well developed yet.

Each WMR headset differs a little bit but the best cheap one is the Dell headset but can't adjust the lens distance. Samsung can but again is the same price as the vive with extra bull of win10 and lack of compatibility for games. I didn't buy one of these because of the IPD problem (mine is 71mm) and didn't even look at an occulus because of facebook though I hear they're better for those without much space.

083119  No.62478

File: 220e8a79b1d95fe⋯.mp4 (4.95 MB, 320x240, 4:3, coffee robot waifu.mp4)

>>62477

>price

My computer cost me about 1k 5 years ago and all I did was upgrade the GPU to a GTX1060 3GB for about $200, keeping the i5 4 core processor the same and it runs a treat. The vive cost me $470 second hand so all up it was about $1.5k-ish assuming you're building from scratch while bargain hunting. All prices converted to USD so it will probably be a bit cheaper without our shitfest import tax and the currency conversion I paid.

>games

If you're really into horror and gallery shooters, this is as good as those genres are going to get. Even a game that uses stock unity models like brookhaven experiment gets my heart racing and hands shaking. If you're a thot that wants to get molested by anime traps then vrchat is the way to go. Beat saber is basically the vr equivalent of audiosurf and does it really well. Duck season has surprisingly good gun play - better than hotdogs, horse shoes and hand grenades. Yet to try much more but as it stands it's all very promising and you can pirate a lot of stuff too despite the small userbase.

>motion sickness

Background information: I get motion sick from being driven more than an hour but don't get it from driving at all. Rollercoasters don't tend to make me terribly sick unless they're slow.

In VR the "smooth movement" (walking with arrow keys) makes me sick very fast because my eyes expect inertia and twist or flick like I'd just spun around a hundred times and stopped suddenly. "Locomotion" (grab and pull with your controllers) is by far the worst for my motion sickness because of the sway-like movement. Teleporting does not make me sick at all and is available in just about every game. Roomscale moving around and turning is completely fine. Lag spikes where the image freezes are very disorienting but aren't lasting enough to matter. If it does last (on crashing for example) then it doesn't disorient me any more than the initial moment. Motion sickness is probably the biggest drawback of it all because it means driving games are completely out for me and spinning on the spot with controls instead of actually moving makes standing/sitting only potentially useless if turning a lot is something you need to do in the game.

>is it worth it

If you have the money to spend on it, yes. If not then try it if you can but otherwise don't stress. It's quite niche and probably will remain so, so don't worry about missing out on it.

My point is that the technology has progressed beyond the point of being a gimmick or some fancy jargon thrown around for advertising. There is actually some substance behind it now. The cellphone strapped to your head with a non-tracked controller kind of vr is definitely a gimmick and is no upgrade over using a regular screen. I'd say the cellphone route is worse than a good screen but the real deal is better.

I'd like to be able to have some kind of MMO-ish world to jump into and explore and do cool shit in but part of me wants to wait for VR to show more signs of being something like that before getting too excited, as fun as it is to fantasize.

Also worth mentioning is that my favorite VR game is Gorn. The arm-swinging movement works surprisingly well, and beating people with your own two hands feels absolutely glorious! be938f  No.93223

>>93192

For a VR FPS, the UI is trash. There really isn't a lot of interactivity. Reloading your weapon is as simple as holding it downwards for a few seconds. Yeah, it's a usable interface, but it's the absolute bare minimum required to get it working with a headset and motion controllers. I would argue that it doesn't really even turn PD2 into a VR title because, while it does work with VR equipment, it hardly gives a VR experience.

If you want a good example of a non-VR game being made into a good VR game, look at Dead Effect 2.

18e5ad  No.93376

>>93223

Most of it I can understand because stuff like the weapon selects are wonky as shit and selecting inventory is just holding your hand on a box at your waist than a physical item. The only part not completely correct there is that you're using main hand manual reloading while what you want is more like off hand reloading.

Speaking of Gorn and its physics, one thing I have wondered about for years is why there hasn't been a porn game with similar physics yet? The main problem with any animated porn, vr or not, is that it gets repetitive, but with Gorn's kinesthetics the characters would actually move and react dynamically. Minotaur China Shop used similar physics too, so I don't believe they should be too hard to implement for someone with average programming skills.

Speaking of guns, I just noticed no one has yet mentioned Sairento! It's my second favorite VR game, as well as the second one that makes perfect use of the equipment's abilities. It's a cyborg ninja game where you jump, slide and wall-run with a Deadpool-ish arsenal of weapons strapped to your body. All the guns are wielded from where you put them, on your hips and your back, and it feels great to jump into a fray of enemies, empty two guns before you hit the ground and finish the last one with a sword as you slide past him. The movement methods are perfect for combat-acrobatics, and it's a testament to the way the game handles movement that no one has gotten motion sickness from it all.

Sorry mac, no idea. Can you not give it a go beforehand?

I bought a Rift earlier this month because I want to do VR development like a fucking tard, but fuck me, the new Rec Room paintball mode with free movement shooting is great. When I had a vive a few years ago (sold it because all the tracking in the world won't save those dildo wand controllers), the paintball was fun, but it was garbage as far as warping around being the only movement type. Free motion shooting is what I've wanted out of VR for a while, and now companies are finally embracing it. Just a shame that (whether it's my internet or theirs) the shit is laggy as fuck. I'm assuming since it's free that it's just every shitter with no good connection getting on there (doesn't help that atm I am living in the sticks and also have bad net). Also wish that the TTK wasn't literally one shot = one kill, you can't really enjoy the strats when literally any stray paint will take them out. But hey, that's okay. All in all it really has me looking forward to working on my own projects.

I have a bunch of steam money from a christmas gift last year sitting in my account, is there anything VR that I should get? Given that it's steam I'd be most interested if it was something multiplayer, since otherwise I don't touch the service much.

If you need to, you could always buy it and refund it in two hours if you're unsure. I've done that before for some VR titles that said were compatible but weren't.

According to the H3VR developer WMR can be used in H3VR fairly well just like standing scale can also be used for the game now, it's just probably got a kink or two from being "supported" according to Steam.

Since you're on WMR and I'm on Vive I'm not sure which ones are fully supported, mostly supported or not supported but I'll just run through my list of VR games that I got started on.

It's easier to work an existing design especially one you know that works and is reliable than build a new gun. Especially if you don't have the space to plop a factory down. I tried H3VR again, and it indeed has a lot more game in it than it used to. Take And Hold especially works well in VR since holding the control points naturally requires you to fight in place.

For some reason the loading times in the M.E.A.T.S. mode are several minutes long though, so if anyone knows what's causing them it would mean more relaxing fun for me.

My trick for aiming rifles in VR is to extend your left arm straight and rest the right controller on your left bicep. It's unusual, but gives you a lot more stability than leaving your right hand unsupported.

I just like gushing about things I like, sometimes to a fault. These are the games I think give the best impression of what VR can do, and if more people get interested in them it will mean more similar games in the future.

>>104824

All jumps start instantly and move in smooth arcs so there is no change in acceleration that would cause motion sickness. Sliding is done by landing with your knees bent, so while it does slowly slow down to a halt, you're already in a lower than usual position so it just feels like a natural extension of the jump. Similarly, wall-runs are done by jumping at a wall in a low enough angle so doing it doesn't cause gradual acceleration either. In a nutshell, every movement feels like you're already on the way and never like lurching into a motion your sense of balance is conflicting with.

Now here's a VR game I can't recommend. Out Of Ammo: Death Drive. It's an FPS-RPG hybrid where you posess units, gather resources and build buildings, which in itself is a great concept with good gunplay and lots of potential.

BUT, there is one fucked up design decision that makes the game literally impossible to enjoy. And I do mean literally, as in it literally PREVENTS you from having fun, even when the fun and games would be right there for you to enjoy. It is the fact that your defensive units need to be resupplied manually every 30 seconds or so, shackling you into babysitting them so they won't doom your base with their inability to take care of their most basic requirements. You could go out and kill zombies, secure more area, or even use the top-tier player-only weapons, but if you're not CONSTANTLY babysitting your retarded cubetards they will run out of ammo and stand there while the enemies kill them, your defences, and your resource gatherers in seconds. By the fourth level I just took out a chair to sit on, because all I was doing was standing there with my neck bent down, looking for whenever the retards started waving with the out of ammo symbol over their heads so I could replenish them before everyone died. That single mechanic ruins the entire game, and everything it could ever HAVE done with all the parts already in place, and they must have fucking known it because it's in the name of the fucking game!

RTS in general does not need to be complicated to be good or interesting. I think R.U.S.E. itself would be a great example of a game that would work well in VR, especially if you are in a room with a table in the middle with a map of the battlefield.

I just tried Pavlov, and it indeed feels good. The price isn't much either, but before I buy it I'd like to know how much actual multiplayer resembles Counter Strike? I hate CS a lot, and wouldn't want to buy a game where I just get constantly owned by people who have dedicated inordinate amounts of time to learn the meta and very specific mechanical quirks of the game.

Air players would dominate because air in RUSE needs micromanagement. Otherwise you're correct.

Now here's a new promising game! Blade & Sorcery is like Gorn, but taken seriously. It has physics-based combat but a realistic style, and instead of making the weapons flexible the player characters strength is what keeps their speed within reasonable bounds. It also has amazing stabbing physics, and blades, daggers and spears embed themselves into human bodies in an extremely satisfying ways!

The game is in early access but already includes plenty of weapons, three locations, a character generator and varied enemy appearances, and the way healing potion is implemented seems to imply there's going to be some kind of adventure mode too.

That's why I always tend to add something like No Commentary to the videos I'm trying to find, else you end up with bone headed idiots doing this shit where they fumble through the game and end up being unfunny.

I always had the philosophy that if you want to add your commentary to a game, always do it in post. Doing it in post allows you to better commentate on what is going on rather than doing it on the spot and being a moron in the process.

I never understood why faggots find the urge to talk over absolutely everything that's happening in game. Is it an American thing or something?

18e5ad  No.109333

>>109291

I wouldn't call it an American thing especially since I've seen Germans do it a lot too, it's more of a side effect that the biggest channels for it are Americans with this formula, so everyone emulates them and their type of LP and nobody slows the fuck down. I remember back in my day when Goons were still somewhat decent people it was raw footage simply dubbed over in post which if I ever did a commentated LP I would do it like that but ultimately formula for a popular LP has changed.

The modern LP consists of:

>Strange haircut/haircolor/features in general to make them special snowflakes

>Insane amount of quick cuts to the point it feels like a schizophrenic ADHD person put it together

>Screaming/worthless dialogue that adds very little of value and/or an attempt at some kind of quote/catchphrase

>Usually commentated live, only thing done in post is cut the gameplay to said quick cuts

>Some kind of facecam to watch them make goofy exaggerated gestures

>Begging for like/subscribe/patreon/donations/merchandise sales/etc

>Thumbnail is usually some photoshopped picture that has very little explanation of the game itself, followed by the title being STUPID THING THAT HAPPENED TO ME?!?!

Try searching for long-play or no commentary and you'll usually find something without it. I mean you should only be watching a game to research it then if you've managed to confirm you won't necessarily hate it download it and play it yourself anyway.

Howso? I've had a lot of fun in Drunkn Bar Fights before, and recently bought Pavlov which has been absolutely great. The only downside I can think of it being multiplayer is that many people appear to be retarded, but that is just as much of a problem in any online multiplayer game whether VR or not. Playing in a good team feels like being in a real tactical squad, while with Swedes or Russians you'll all be playing practically solo and hoping that the enemy team out-retards yours.

To say something more about Pavlov, I was concerned that it would be a circlejerk like CS, where winning means memorizing how many seconds it takes to steady your aim and what the pre-determined bullet spread pattern of ech weapon is. Instead, Pavlov is really about controlling the guns with your hands rather than pointing your mouse where you wish for it to aim at, meaning your aim really depends on how well you really can aim. Naturally ou can also kneel, lean around corners and such, and you are completely free to dual-wield any weapons you want, running into predictable trouble with recoil or when you need to reload either one of them. And as always, handling weapons with your own two hands just feels great!

I don't know what you mean by clunky. Acceleration being instant rather than gradual is necessary for avoiding motion sickness, but if you mean walking speeds you can run just by lowering your gun. If you mean the lack of prerecorded animations, that's because the characters heads and hands move precisely how their players move.

>That reloading action

I believe this is a result of people never having actually operated a bolt lock gun. You can reload it with your right hand perfectly well, but it's always amusing to spot someone looking down at their gun and carefully and deliberately moving the bolt.

Cargo Cult: Shoot and Loot is exactly what I want more of, but delivers way too little of it. It's about standing on the bow of an airship, floating slowly through beautiful fantasy landscapes and shooting everything in sight with a minigun and shotgun. The premise is simple, but the mood is great and the devastation satisfying for the first two levels.

Unfortunately, the game is only three levels long and the dev team clearly ran out of steam halfway through the third stage. After two stages of more destructibles than you have time to shoot the third stage has barely any, and about halfway through it's nothing but floating rocks that would be impressive in real life but just plain lazy in a videogame. The last stage ends with a message that more adventures are to come, but after two years of no progress I highly doubt it. Even beside the abrupt ending and its text it's clear that this game finish what it aimed to do. The two last pictures in this post are examples of the games lore and characters, none of which make any appearance whatsoever in the game itself.

If you'd like a short shooting romp through fun and cheerful surroundings, I truly recommend this, although not entirely for the reasons the developers would like. The game is so short you can actually finish it and even win every single steam achievements for it before the two-hour refund period is over. Absolutely worth playing, but not worth 14 dollars for a 30 minute campaign.

No, just a wave shooter moving forward at a steady pace. It's very simple but extremely well made for the two finished levels it has.

Speaking of wave shooters, High Noon VR was another nice little game. It has more levels, weapons and goals than Cargo Cult, and while it is still short and simple, it's still fun and cartoony which is always nice.
