To condense some useful shit from sjwchan:
Mining
You need to find a planetary ring with pristine reserves. Head out into the frontier with a
decent planetary scanner, pass by planets till you find one with rings then target and scan
it. You can then go into the system map and it will tell you about the rings reserves. You
want "metal rich" and "pristine reserves". This will make you richer faster. You can even sell
the useless survey data you accrued in your search.
EZ MONEY GUIDE:
Here's a quick guide to make around 500k an hour, I haven't actually timed it but it's probably about right.
1. Buy a Hauler, or ideally, a Cobra.
2. Refit your ship to these specs: 20Ly jump distance, a fuel scoop, and 30 cargo space. You can get by with 15Ly max jumps, but it'll be slower going. Replace shit like your power plant with crappier versions to squeeze the most out of your jump distance. 30 cargo space is usually enough, but 40 will cover a super lucky find.
3. Go to Lave. Use
https://cmdr.club/routes/, punch in your current location, your max jump
range, and get there.
4. Now it's time for the money making. Head to these stations, and buy all the items with
yellow text. It'll cost you maybe 50k at most.
Lave: Lave Station
Diso: Shifnalport
Leesti: George Lucas
5. Now you're all loaded up on cargo, use the route planner again to arrange a route to Bast.
This is 160Ly away, the optimal distance to sell rares.
6. When you get to Bast, go to Hart Station, buy the yellow item there, and sell all your other rares. You should make around 450k.
7. Plot a return journey, and sell the rares you got from Bast in Lave for another 50k.
8. Rinse and repeat until you want to kill yourself from the mindnumbing tedium.

Crowded Starting systems? I was in the first system I started in for maybe 3 minutes before I warped out. Now I'm out in pand, on my way to trifid doing sweet, sweet exploration. I wish I had an advanced discovery scanner, but I don't care. 10K Light year jump, hundreds of stars to explore. Gonna enjoy it. Hoping to find 50+ earth-like planets. So far exploration has given me great views and been pretty fun hunting planets. I hope this long trip will give me some money so I can jump into a big ship and see some even cooler sights.

B: Aim for subsystems. FSD, power plant, drives.
Interdiction: get close behind your target in SC, hit the firegroup your interdictor is in and you'll get a minigame chasing the fucker around.
NPCs seem to suck at it and seldom escape so you are good with the cheapest one if you not look to grab players.
FSD wakes come in low and high. High means they hyperjumped out and you need a wake scanner to determine the guys target. Once you scanned it gets autologged as your new hyperjump target and you jump after him.
Low wakes are caused by going/leaving SC and you just enter them like you would a station or such, don't think you even need a scanner for that.
Right now those pretty much the only way to help a bro with missions, at least if the matchmaking does not fuck with you.
For ex. he goes off to anaconda murdering, searches though USS and when he enters one you'll hopefully see a low wake that you can now enter to get into the same map as him.

Real quick exploration tip, not that ya'll care.
Looks like [from my exploration and looking at the numbers] planets live in habitable zones
the closest possible seems to be 350~ish Light Seconds, and the furthest out varies a lot on the star, with the dimmer stars being as close at 1500, and the brighter [O's, A's and B's] being as far out as 2500
So if you happen across a solar system that happens to have metallic planets in that range away from their star, they're really worth marking if you don't have the planetary scanner, as places you should come back and scan later

I'm having a shit ton of luck right bow. If I wasn't at work I'd be scanning down. Another 20 systems for sure.
So far, last three days I've made about 400 K. I think their calculation mamade it so there are planets ripe for terraforming pretty close to already inhabited space. 2/3rds of the last systems I've visited have had terraformable planets on them, with maybe a quaternary of those having multiple world's for terraforming.
Counting in the habitat ed systems that want explorers data (check your maps kids!) Im gonna make enough to get the advanced discovery scanner. Then I'm off to scan a 1000 cubic light year block of space. 12K light year round trip, the huge block of space… I'm gonna be elite by the end of the month if all goes according to plan! TEST Mostly harmless
This reddit loving bunch is cancer in it's purest form where gaming communities are concerned.
Lave, being the center of many commanders needs be it trading or player based interactions etc etc has been targeted by this group.
They occupy the systems in the area in the name of "protecting innocent players from baddie pirates out to steal your cargo." In return all they ask for is… Your cargo. I'll check back in a day or so and depending on the ammount of replies to this reply or to the thread i'm making on /elite/ we could schedule an operation to sabotage their operations. I've got a small group of willing players from a local community already willing. We just need large enough numbers to take them on.
Also how would you guys like to start a chan steam group for the game, it's likely we'd have to unite with the cuckchan commanders and possibly source in some commanders from the russian chan but its a necissary alliance.

>>5737Explorer here. Some friendly tips to fellow anons. Isoldra here is right on the money, at least to a point.
The game uses largely realistic habitable zone information to determine if a planet can be terraformed or even Earth-like (or a "close as" water world).
So now you negros are thinking, "great but how the fuck does that affect me". Well, since it's SCIENCE, you can SCIENCE with it. So use this website to calculate HZ. If you are a codefag who is able to FORTRAN or Python, source is provided for you to do shit with.
http://depts.washington.edu/naivpl/sites/default/files/index.shtmlFinding the star's temperature isn't too hard, just scan the star and drop the system scan temps into the temperature box on the site. It's already in Kelven so no conversion necessary.
Finding the star's luminosity to use on that page is a bit trickier but possible with math power.
First, take the radius of the star (which you can find via system map info again) and then square it. Or (RADIUS)^2 using a computer calculator.
Then, take the temperature of the star and divide it by the temperature of Earth's sun (5780 K). Or (ALIEN SUN TEMP)/5780 on a computer calculator. And then take that number, which we'll call “Adjusted Temperature” and then increase it by a power of four. Or, (ADJUSTED TEMPERATURE)^4 using a computer calculator.
Multiply the final radius number by the final temperature number, and you get the star's luminosity. Which you then put into the box. This will give you exact Habitable Zone information for that particular star. It's gets a bit trickier when you account for planets orbiting two or more stars at the same time, but for most cases it works fairly well.
FD's HZ algorithm isn't the best though so planets slightly outside the HZ can be terraform compatible, so keep that in mind.
No.7693
OK! Now with the bespoke calculation shit out of the way, here's some rough numbers for lazy people reading this thread. Note I'm not bothering with giant or subdwarf variants here, just standard main sequence shit (V/VAB stars), and common non-sequence or sub-sequence products.
Sub-main sequence stars (L, Y, T) = They don't fuse hydrogen and are pretty fucking cold. The only planets around these are likely ice worlds, and those are shit unless you want tags (actually they are still shit even with tags). Maybe a really closely orbiting planet has a chance to be terraformed, but otherwise fuck it.
M-type stars: I've never seen an non-hand-made M star system with an Earth like, maybe a water world at best. But quite a few with terraformables. Anyway, rocks 25 to 100ls (give or take depending on temperature and radius) are in the sweet spot here.
K-type stars: I got an Earth-like with these, and good with terraformables. Look to around 150 to 400ls (again, give or take) for the good stuff.
G-type stars: Earth is around a G-star so you'll have good luck with these. However G stars are also the first to have a wide temperature range and thus wide HZ distances. Look to around 300 to 900ls (depending by 50-100ls on temperature).
F-type stars: Very warm but still great for terras. Cool F's can have an HZ starting around 450ls, and hot F's can go out to 2000ls. A lot of variation in HZ for this class.
A-type stars: Hot but still can produce good worlds. Extreme variance in HZ depending on temps. Bear minimum for a very cool A-type is around 850ls, and the outer limit is for a hot A would be around 50000ls! Holy shit!
B-type and O-type stars: These break the HZ calculator so Earth's around them are probably impossible (if for no other reason than these stars would be too young to be able to have natural Earth-ecosystem worlds). Terraform candidates (if any exist) are likely outwards of 5000ls, and climbing as the heat goes up.
Black Holes: Normally no planets, but not always. Anyway, no light = no heat = ice.
Neutron Star: Not uncommon to have planets around these. However I and others have found planets that can be terraformed in these systems! Not sure how that'd work in reality, and the settings for a Neutron Star break the HZ calculator in my previous post, but I found mine around 3500ls out.
No.7722
>>7691>>7693Now I want to go explore. I turreted enough for an exploring ship I guess.
No.7730
>>7722You really only need about 800k to start doing reasonable exploration.
250k for a Detail Scanner.
~500k for an Intermediate Scanner.
~50k for a fuel scoop.
With the increased bounties on ships, that's a few hours of work in a Sidewinder or Eagle.
Just add 350k-ish to that price tag to get a Cobra Mark III on top of it and go anywhere in full comfort, and the security that you can outrun ANYTHING if you need to.
Having an Advanced Scanner is very nice though, but it's relatively expensive.
No.7760
Explorer mini-update, I recently ran into an Earthlike around an M-star. So they do spawn, but it's highly unlikely. Probably has to do with the fact that a closely orbiting planet will get tidally locked, but that's just a guess.
Of course getting locked shouldn't necessarily prevent a world from being habitable, but it would have a dangerous weather system. The hot side would have like a permanent superstorm raging around it, and the cold side would be a glacier.
Either way, keep this all in mind.

Is that accurate? Can I be pretty safe in heading out without any passive or active protection?

That's been my experience. Of course, I also play solo

For sure. If you do by whatever chance see someone out there who for whatever reason decides they want to kill you. They probably wont be able to stop you before you jump away with what little weaponry they're likely to have. That and i've never even seen an explorer with an interdictor module. You'll be perfectly fine.

Not entirely true. If you do explore naked in Open, KEEP THE HELL AWAY FROM TOURIST TRAPS. There are people there who are extremely happy to kill you. You'll more likely run into these kinds closer to inhabited space, but then I wouldn't feel comfortable around the galactic core either.
In Solo, it's less of a problem but I'd include shields since I don't mind extra protection, say accidentally hitting something.

Nah literally 0 chance of running into anyone once you get 1,000ly away from civilized space.
Once you notice that all the systems haven't been discovered yet you are in the clear.
And for fuck sakes get a fuel scoop that can scoop 150+/sec. It will save you so much time.
Can find a nice cheap class 4 for 400kish depending on the ship

Hey, coming back after a long break, have some question:
1. Should I pledge to any power and if yes, which?
2. I currently have a Viper, and the pricegap to the next ships is huge, should I get multiple ships to store credits in some form?
3. I was thinking about going for more of a exploration/mining playstyle, can the Adder do that or do I need to get Diamondback for that?
4. Is any playstyle other than doing hitman missions viable?

1. Not for now IMO, it can fuck with your freedom to go where you want (unless you don't mind getting interdicted a lot) and the rewards are rather meh compared to the grind to reach them.
If you DO want to pledge look for the faction that fits your playstyle most, like bonus percentage for your BH or w/e.
2. No economic reason for storing,I think you might even lose some percentage on selling them. Only reason I store 'winders occasionally is to mark systems on the Galmap.
Can't really help with 3&4, aside from noting that a Viper will shitty for exploration and mining. IMO try a Cobra for that, like the Viper it is very cheap for its performance.

not him, but is there a good ship I can get for powerplay? I have ~4-5 mil to spend.

Is there a reason why there is no more /edg/ on halfchan?

>have Cobra
>decide to try exploran
>spend over 400k on a new FSD and Detailed Surface Scanner
>get rid of FSD indictor
>get out of civilized space (Pisces Sector)
>cartograph an entire, hughe system with 3 stars and at least 14 solid objects
>go back to civilized space
>get 28k for it
Is there a trick to doing exploran or is it just that bad? Or will it pay off in horizons?

It just dies off occasionally, guess too many are pissed off about BUYING MUH GAME AGAIN right now.

Exploran just is that bad, sadly.
Best improvement you could get was the Community goal that gave extra reward for turning shit in at one Faction HQ.

>pretty well upgraded cobra
>thinking about getting a type 6 for trucking
>in "Asian Capitalist guy" system
>T6 for only 800k
When should I jump ship? should I have the full 800k in cash or just make sure to have enough left over for a decent FSD and powerplant?
Should I go FULL truck or do mining with a bit of trucking on the side?
I'd get the prospector limpet and refinery for that.

Always wait longer then you want to, IMO. Best to have the creds for FSD, amenities like for ex. fuel scoop plus the insurance AND a full cargohold before switching unless you plan to keep the old ship too.
Full cargo is probably still more efficient for your bottomline, but I am one of the few who like mining.
As tips do ffs not skimp on the refinery class and personally I don't think prospector limpets worth it, you get more mileage out of the cargo ones. You'll still want to learn handpicking the fragments but it is an asspain to always HAVE to do it.

>just 3 stars and 14 solids
Hate to say it, that's not exactly the best start.
Now if you did a deep dive, and got a lot of clay and exotics, you'd have millions.
Trading would still be more efficient, though boring

I'm just getting back into it after a few months myself. The planet shit might be interesting.
