Note: the general consensus at /kspg/ is that you should torrent the game, rather than purchasing it. The developer, Squad, is incompetent, extremely
mismanaged, and is very resistant to all feedback or criticism. Furthermore, the game itself is poorly made, lacks a proper development team, and is in
need of a serious physics and optimization overhaul, something that Squad is likely never to give it. In fact, we at /kspg/ believe that they are planning on
abandoning development of the game altogether at some point within the next year. They do not deserve your shekels.

Here's something they don't tell you in KSP school. Whenever you collect scientific data that isn't a crew report or EVA report, you get more science for bringing it home than for just transmitting it. If you plan on bringing the capsule back to Kerbin, have your pilot go into EVA, go over to the science module, collect the data, and store it in the capsule. This applies to EVA reports as well. You can store multiple crew reports this way by taking the crew report, EVAing your pilot, and having them take the data from the capsule and store it again.
You can pretty much go to any planet or moon in the game with the science you get from Kerbin the Mun and Minmus. When in low orbit around a body, you can get several different EVA reports depending on the type of terrain you are flying over. When going to a new body, make sure you take a crew report, EVA report, temperature, and pressure of high orbit, low orbit, and the surface. You don't even need a transmitter on your craft as long as you store your data in the capsule and bring it back in one piece.
Pic unrelated.

List of steps (Check as you go), Learn how to:
[ ] build something that flies.
[ ] build something that flies fast.
[ ] build something that flies fast and stable.
[ ] build something that can go straight up.
[ ] build something that can go straight up into space, turn it around and land it with fuel left (use parachutes).
[ ] balance your rocket using symmetry mirror mode.
[ ] use RCS in space (or use the debug toolbar (ALT-F12) to disable gravity and play with it).
[ ] Effectively use SAS to stabilize and turn around a ship in zero gravity.
Ok, that was the basics, ready for the next part? Yes, you can google each of these things and find excellent tutorials, especially on JewTube.
Learn how to:
[ ] Get into an elliptical orbit.
[ ] Get into the atmosphere from an orbit with minimum fuel use (With enough RCS, you can deorbit a pod)
[ ] Get into a polar orbit (A North-South orbit) and then adjust the orbit into a diagonal NE-SW orbit. (Burning Normal and Anti-normal)
[ ] Make your orbit lower or higher (Burning Prograde and Retrograde).
[ ] Use Orbital maneuver nodes (Left click on the orbit line, add maneuver).
[ ] Understand how to move your orbit left and right by using the Radial and Anti-radial (This is the hula hoop manouver)
[ ] Use orbital maneuver nodes and get below 0.1 m/s to your target (by using RCS instead of the powerful rockets, or by thrust limiting)
Ok, at this point you know how to get to orbit, and move in and out of orbit. The trick of rendezvousing with planets and objects with gravity is to use the gravity to your advantage and not fight it. In space, we go into a set orbit, then we burn until the orbit becomes a long ellipse that intersects our objects (The orbit line will change to an orange color when you change to a new influence of gravity like the moon). As soon as you enter into the new field of gravity for your target, you're going to have to make yourself an orbit.
When you want to move yourself in space, the actions and maneuvers you do at one point in the orbit, affects the orbit in all places except for where you are. If you are on a crash course towards an object, you can't burn away from it to avoid a collision, you have to burn up, down, left or right to change your orbit as to avoid the object unless you want to waste a lot of fuel fighting gravity. So if you get into the Moon's gravity and you are heading for a collition course, burn in a direction that will move the Apoapsis or Periapsis away from the object, then burn prograde to make the orbit around the object when you get to the orbital node.
No.16792
Continued:
>>16791
When you're ready to land on the moon, you burn prograde to change the orbit into a falling path down towards your landing site (Land on the bright side). Then use the rocket from time to time to slow down your descent speed and when you're under 100 meter height you should be slow enough to bring the ship to a complete hover at any time. Unfold the landing gear and land.
Now, you said in your post (>>15913) how to get off the rock, which requires a little bit of skill of your part. You can go for the most difficult move and do the Apollo 13 landing with a lander module and a control ship in orbit, but that's very hard for your level. Instead, pack the lander with enough fuel to bring you down on the moon and up again, half an orange should be enough with the least powerful big rocket. Now here's where most people make a big mistake: they burn straight up first, then try to burn into an orbit. This is waste of energy, instead: burn sideways and go straight into an orbit, wait to get to the other side and burn prograde to make the rest of the orbit. The most economic burns are done at the Apoapsis of the orbit and not inbetween the Apoapsis and Periapsis like you are in a movie.
As you plan for your return trip to Kerbin, make sure your orbit on the Periapsis goes below 70km (enter the atmosphere) and you won't have to waste fuel slowing down as atmosphere will do it for you. And if you are on you way out of the atmosphere again, just burn a little to make sure you stay in.
Now, ready for the intermediate part?
Learn how to:
[ ] Put a satellite in a 250k orbit (with a docking port).
[ ] Build a space shuttle or a space plane.
[ ] Learn how to get a space plane into orbit without boosters or upwards facing rockets.
[ ] Learn how to rendezvous (This is the hardest part)
Understand that rendezvous is easy once you understand orbital mechanics, but hard until you do. You're going to have to read or watch tutorials online to understand all the aspects of rendezvous as well as what an orbit is. An orbit is a freefall that has enough speed sideways to miss the planet. There's a tiny invisible rubber band that holds you in place as you fall around the sphere, and any maneuver you do will affect the other side of the orbit but the rubberband will always pull you back to where you are right now after doing a complete lap. By burning in each direction, you change in what direction you fall around the sphere, and in order to match up with another orbiting object, you'll have to predict where the object is when you adjust your orbit for the place you are going to be when you get there.
The orbital nodes will show you previews of where will be and your target and also the distance between you at that point.
Learn how to:
[ ] Get within 1km of your target.
[ ] Burn prograde to match the speed of the target and get into an orbit that will stay within 1-2 km of the target.
[ ] Use RCS to steer towards the target and put the prograde marker on the target and make sure you're heading towards your target and not away from it.
[ ] Slow down when you approach your target.
[ ] Dock with your target.
[ ] Undock and deorbit.
It took me almost a year until I started caring about docking, I was just flying around and making space planes until then. After learning how to rendezvous, I could easily do transfers to other planets, satellites and space rocks without breaking a sweat. Now the issue I have is that I sometimes face the wrong direction when I attempt to burn for something because the Map screen doesn't show the ships direction when pointing.

Do not be afraid of mods, especially mods that will help you count or do stuff. You don't need Mechjeb in the beginning unless you already work at NASA.
Here's a list of recommended mods that will help you a lot:
Enhanced Nav Ball (Makes the nav ball bigger)
Nav Hud (Renders the navball around the ship to allow for easier accuracy)
Trajectories (Calculates your deorbit entries and shows you projected trajectories instead of fake ones based on your current orbit)
Kerbal Engineer (Gives you tons of info about your craft, orbits, statistics while building in the SPH but also as HUDs while flying, all customizable)
Kerbal Joint Reinforcement (Stiffens the rockets without struts, this mod will actually make the game feel rigid)
And one last thing, learn about:
[ ] deltaV
[ ] Altitude for atmospheric entry
[ ] Less is more, more is less
[ ] Optimal speed to reach space (Going full burn mach 7 is not fuel efficient)
[ ] Orbital inclination (NASA doesn't go straight up and then burn sideways, they start going sideways before leaving the atmosphere)
[ ] Space planes, space planes, space planes (Building, balancing, not crashing, not breaking (One of the hardest parts in the game))
[ ] RCS balancing
[ ] Mineral scanning and mining
Good luck out there fellow Jeb.
