Do all these newer systems use installs/unpacks for games? I really do prefer the "drag-n-drop" nature of older systems that support proper ROMs/disc images.

3ds requires installing the .cia file you put in your sd card. The PS3 requires installing pkg and rap files and you have to split the games up because of fat32s file size limit. Simply put its not like buying a flash cart and dragging and dropping, but it isnt too much of a hassle either. PS3 is the most time consuming.

Reminder that if you have a fat PS2 its easier than ever to install freemcboot. There is even a network adapter made by chinks you can grab for ~13 bucks that will allow you to use a SATA HDD.

OP here, I'd recommend a PS3 for PS2 piracy, it's far less hassle and far more comfy and in line with modern expectations in terms of hacking and tooling. PS2 homebrew is clunky and flaky as fuck.
cf7d81 No.84528
>>84487
>clunky and flaky
What do you mean? It's just as smooth as the original PS2 menu and adding applications to it is a s easy as entering a USB stick and navigating a menu. PS2 homebrew is also good because when somethign breaks it is easily fixable because it's not all tied to 1 piece of hardware. Also, aren't there loads of innaccuracies on the PS3's PS2 emulation? Unless oyu have an orignal release PS3 I don't think it wil be as good as the PS2. I'd agree that PS games are better to use on the PS3 if you can deal with the 480i upscaling because PS1 hardware methods are a hassle and methods without a freemcboot memorycard are harmful for your PS2 and the PS2's PS1 emulation is awful.
2a7eae No.84574
>>84528
1. the only optimal way to actually play ISOs is using a HDD + PS2 Net adapter (required to connect the HDD), this means you can't just quickly copy a game to the HDD because it's some fat-ass 3.5" monster drive which it's hard to get enclosures for, plus it needs its OWN FUCKING POWER SOURCE.
2. Managing/deleting/copying games over FTP is a fucking nightmare
3. No, the homebrew is not just as smooth as the original PS2 menu, have you actually used this garbage?
4. It's easy to fuck up the FMCB by accident and kill your homebrew entrypoint, this is less easy with modern homebrew like the PS3.
5. PS3 upscales PS2 ISOs to HD, looks fantastic.
Yes some games don't work but there aren't many like that. Most just werk

Yes I have and still do to this day. In fact, I used it last night and continued a JRPG I've been working on. I agree that it's not as easy to transfer games over, but finding a cheap enclosure is easy as hell to find for 3.5 SATA drives. When soft modding your PS2 it's best to have every game you want in the HDD ready to go over for a 1 time deal. With how old the PS2 library is this shouldn't be too much of a hassle. a 500GB-750GB HDD will old any games you want to play easily. With one Freemcboot memory card you can install as many backup freemcboot installs as you want to spare memory cards. The only way I can see it's easy to fuck up a freemcboot install is to navigate the file browser and fuck around without being cautious. All you need is to go to OpenPS2loader which loads faster than the stock disc reader, ffs. Also, if you use a CRT to play PS2 games you don't want upscaling.

Can I also use the PS4 to play PS3 ISO's?
a8b9a0 No.87376
>>87355
The PS4 doesn't have shit for backwards compatibility. If you want PS2 and PS3, get a PS3. If you're looking to do a lot of PS2 stuff, get a fat PS2. One thing to say about PS2 hacking is that everyone talks about Free MC Boot, but there's a variant that you can put right on the HDD instead of the memory card.
9971da No.87434
>>87376
Yeah the HDD variant is a good option. You can even install freemcboot from the HDD version onto a memory card and essentially have both options available to you.
>>87355
The PS3 is a solid option for an all around homebrew. I prefer original hardware, and I have been arguing about freemcboot ITT, but it is the best option in terms of practicality and easier on your wallet if you don't have the consoles or parts you need. One thing about buying a PS3 if you need to make sure you get a combatible model so make absolute sure you are getting the right one.
