Talk about Doom, your favorite retro FPS games and mods here.

Anyone try out Total Chaos?

Content finished version of the game just came out and it has some grimy/rusty aesthetics that I really like and can be seen in games like Out of Hell, Killing Floor and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

It's based on GZDoom, but it's already pre packaged, no need for a basegame .wad either since it uses FreeDoom, also prepacked.

They repost mods for ecred and some even claim ownership over them just because they reposted it on that platform. The actual authors for the mayority of doom mods listed there don't use that shit at all.

Browse ZDoom and Zandronum forums' Gameplay mods & Maps section for mods and any info about them. Bigger selection to choose from too.

Sometimes doomworld even lists mods as well, so be sure to check out the /idgames archive from time to time. Otherwise, use it for maps.

Because the brazilian monkey used assets without proper credit and then claimed his mod was the "Proper Way To Play Doom In Current Year™". Despite being a below-average gore mod with a broken headshot mechanic and a_fastchase spam on monsters.

Are there any Doom/Doom 2/Hexen/etc. .wads designed for play in VR? I've been playing that a lot, but even playing through E1M1 and the rest is starting to get a bit old already.

Isn't it as simple as just using regular .wads in VR with a plugin last I checked?

064a12  No.93991

>>93987

True, you can just load up any .wad you want and it works fine in it. Thing is some .wads have strange geometry that doesn't flow properly when fighting even in VR and makes it feel odd.

It's kind of like the difference between using a keyboard and gamepad for playing certain games, it can make a title feel better or worse depending on how it's set up.

3c8794  No.93992

>VR Doom

How would that actually work? Literally?

I just don't see something like that translating well to VR. Care to explain how it works?

064a12  No.93994

>>93992

I have it set up where my left hand deals with interacting with doors/buttons and moving while my right hand deals with weapons and aiming. There is something about the somewhat floaty movement that kind of works well in VR, but you'll probably want to download a mod replacing the weapons onscreen with 3d models for better aim.

There's something satisfying about turning a corner, swinging my shotgun around and blasting a demon in the face while dodging his attack.

3c8794  No.93996

>>93994

What do you use? A keyboard? Also what is speed like cause Doom is played typically very fast. I could only imagine VR slowing it down.

064a12  No.93998

>>93996

Nope, you use your hand controllers to do all the same things the keyboard does. For the motion you have to get used to running through the level so game play is slightly slower than a keyboard run. The biggest perk to a VR run is the independent aiming+look such as the ability to blast an enemy around a corner/barrier easier like the room in E1M3ish.

Don't suppose you got pics or webms of this in action? Or a side by side comparison of being played with VR and non VR? Seems interesting but odd.

Because this is retro FPS discussion and 2005 doesn't make the cut in terms of gameplay.

There's also not much to discuss since the only decent TC made with it is the Dark Mod and the game itself is really mediocre, even for a standalone game, great lighting and aesthetics however.

Repostan from /v/

Just finished Total Chaos mod for Doom

Survival horror game, melee combat focused with weapon degradation but with enough abundance to not be annoying, combining system to create weapons/survival items, Bleed/Radiation/Hunger system, ranged weapons but ammunition is scarce, decent enemy variety, level design is also pretty good.

Aesthetics are like a mix between Silent Hill and S.T.A.L.K.E.R

8/10 better than most premium games I've played nowadays

It's still not completely finished though it's at version 0.97, so not all of the content is in there and there are issues with geometry and game systems along with a few bugs.

If you use the pre packaged version be sure to run FreeDoom or else the particle system won't work.

It's amazing how much this mod is progressing, i recall a few years back it was already eye-dropping by the time it was being showcased despite the lack of levels and the clunkiness of combat, but it's really coming along quite nicely.

Funny enough, i recall this mod's main author wanting to make something like this for Skulltag, way before Zandronum even rolled over, because of the new addition of MD3 model support being tested in some of the 98e dev builds. At least, i recall Wad'a'Holic was talking about something similar right around the time he released Shotgun Frenzy.

It's still being developed just by him alone right? That dude's really dedicated at his work.

Likely won't work on a toaster due to all the shit added to the game though, if you want something with nearly game breaking framerates try out Out of Hell for UT2004 though, that shit goes down to silky smooth 15 fps sometimes due to all the autistic detail the Gook modder added to it, he's even making a Remake of the game in UE4.

>clunkiness of combat

Combat is still somewhat clunky until you get the hang of it, it's mainly based on quick combos for light weapons/light attacks and positioning with heavy weapons/attacks that will project you towards an enemy if he's close by.

I though it would be shit but when you start getting more than 1 enemy shit is really fun and tense as fuck

This really is the problem with VR, everyone is focusing on "How can I convert my title to VR" instead of "How can I make a fun experience for VR using VR flatscreen can't recreate" like it should be. Doom was the game that kicked off people buying GPUs proving that if you make it, people will catch up and buy the hardware necessary to play it. VR has a lot of expensive gimmicks and shit shovel ware even by AAA companies (Ironically done by Bethesda/Id themselves) but it needs its own Doom before people will take it seriously. Closest thing right now might be Gorn, but it's not a game that people will mod and continue to mod 25 years later.

>>98437

>nobody will want to make a game that will be supported for another 25 years cause it's unprofitable

I wouldn't call it supporting a game for 25 years, by this I meant more of the replayability of a game. Most games people end up playing through once, talking about it for a month or two and then are completely forgotten after that. Very few games will be talked about 5 or 10 years after launch, unless they did something important to warrant such a lifetime. Doom has now been going for 25 years with people still modifying it to this day and shows that happens when a company ultimately makes a revolutionary game.

>The industry is too greedy to allow VR to take off

The greed is more based on the industry itself becoming an industry, whereas in the 90s it was more niche and profit wasn't as large a concern as making a good game. I don't want to turn it into a FUCK 2007 reason, but the rising costs, development times and diminishing returns of modern game development means companies will churn out whatever shit they can to make money while trying to follow the current trend like MOBA, Sandbox Survival, Class Shooters or Battle Royale for instance. Old games have a sort of soul to them that with the strict project development put in place nowadays means that you won't see games that last for 25 years, you'll see games made to make $25 million profit instead.

Basically when profits are put first, innovation will never happen and all you end up with are games more interested in making a buck than making something memorable.

>Gorn you say?

Close, but not quite that type of Gorn.

QZDoom and piZDoom are made by the tranny ((("Rachael"))) who is deep in cahoots with Graf and i wouldn't trust their versions.

Blood Remaster confirmed by Nightdive

http://archive.is/6agpY

8275e3  No.104403

>>104332

Reposting for anons too lazy:

About Blood

Originally released in 1997, Blood is a first-person shooter that helped redefine the genre and first introduced many elements now accepted as commonplace. In Blood, players jump into the boots of undead gunslinger Caleb as he seeks revenge against the dark god Chernobog. Caleb’s arsenal features a mix of standard and occult weaponry, which he uses to devastating and gore-filled, effect. In the game, players visit a terrifying world populated by hordes of bloodthirsty fiends including cultists, gargoyles, zombies, hellhounds, and an unholy host of other terrors.

Remaster Team

The team working on the game at Nightdive Studios includes lead engine developer Samuel “Kaiser” Villarreal, whose previous work includes The Original Strife, Turok, Turok 2: Seeds of Evil and, most recently, Forsaken Remastered. Additionally, developers Edward Richardson, James Haley, and producer Daniel Grayshon will be working on the project.

Upgrades

Originally developed by Monolith Productions and released in 1997, Blood remains a fan-favorite and will receive enhancements to improve the action-packed, horrifying game experience.“Blood stood up extremely well over time and we are taking care to preserve all the qualities that made the game so special,” said producer Daniel Grayshon. “It really only needs minor updates to provide a better user experience for contemporary audiences. By using some of the functions of Nightdive’s KEX engine, we’ll be able to provide compatibility with today’s video standards, with DirectX and Vulkan support.” Grayshon continued, “Similarly, we’ll provide compatibility with the current audio standards. We’ll add support for modern networks, Steamworks, and GOG Galaxy to bring this original game to more players. As part of this, we will preserve the accuracy of the game behavior. While these upgrades are relatively minor, we are confident that they will provide fans with a better, current generation gameplay experience.”

SIGIL Interview with John Romero

>Q: Why did you decide to create a megawad?

<A: People have been asking me to make an entire episode for many years now, and that picked up a lot after I released E1M8B and E1M4B in 2016. Many messaged me to ask if I’d consider making a 5th episode for the 25th anniversary. So, back in 2016, that’s what I decided to do. Like all other mods, it will be free. However, I also wanted to do something special, so we decided to also create an incredible package that fans would love and include an amazing soundtrack by Buckethead. Everything that’s included in the fan boxes is really cool to show off, and Christopher Lovell’s art is fitting for such a hellish game. The Beast Box has to be the most evil game box I’ve seen.

>Q: What’s the storyline for Sigil since it takes place after episode 4 and before DOOM II®?

<A: After killing the Spiderdemon at the end of E4M8 (Unto the Cruel), your next stop is Earth — you must save it from hellspawn that is causing unimaginable carnage. But Baphomet glitched the final teleporter with his hidden sigil whose eldritch power brings you to even darker shores of Hell. You fight through this stygian pocket of evil to confront the ultimate harbingers of Satan, then finally return to become Earth’s savior. In summary, rip and tear!

>Q: What is a megawad?

<A: A megawad is a wad made up of other wads, and a wad is a default file format for DOOM® and DOOM II®. It stands for “where’s all the data?” The free version of the SIGIL wad contains several wads that deliver the levels. In the SIGIL fan boxes, we also include Buckethead’s amazing music. To make it work, you basically drag the SIGIL.WAD file onto gzdoom.exe (or gzdoom.app on a Mac). Sigil’s numbering scheme is E5Mx where “x” is the level number 1-9. Episode Five, just after Episode Four: Thy Flesh Consumed. To play SIGIL, you must have the registered DOOM.WAD as well.

>Q: You mentioned that there’s nine levels in this megawad, as well as nine deathmatch-only levels. Are there eighteen levels in the megawad?

<A: Actually, there are only nine distinct level wad files. It turns out that you can put both the single- player and the deathmatch levels in the same wad. If you run the wad in deathmatch mode, you spawn in the deathmatch area of the level. If you play Sigil in cooperative mode, you start in the single-player part of the level. This support has been in DOOM® since the beginning.

>Q: How did you create Sigil’s levels?

<A: I used the incredible Doom Builder 2 by Pascal vd Heiden (with support from several other authors). You can get it at http://doombuilder.com and try making levels yourself – it’s not hard to do. Doom Builder runs on Windows 10. I’m a Mac person, so I use VMFusion 11 to run Windows 10 and Doom Builder. It works really well in a virtual machine. Even testing levels while making them was lightning-fast. I press a hotkey and gzdoom launches the level and it runs over 60fps.

>Q: How long did it take you to create Sigil?

<A: I worked on it part time during 2017 and 2018, mostly while I was on vacation or in the evenings. I wanted to have a surprise for DOOM’s 25th anniversary. I learned a lot from E1M8B and E1M4B, so I think I did a better job this time. The boss level is terrifying. For me, making this whole episode was a labor of love and a reminder of all the amazing times that we had at id working on the original. I was fortunate to be a part of such a great team and a foundational game.

>Q: Is there anything new in Sigil’s levels compared to other mods?

<A: Well, I wanted the levels to feel like they belong to the original game as if they were a true fifth episode. There’s more detail in the levels than episodes 1-4, but not overly so. I believe that people playing Sigil will recognize my design style, but see new things I’m doing because this episode does not take place on a military base – it takes place in Hell, which is new to me within DOOM®’s design space. There’s a massive room in E5M6 that is the coolest room I’ve created in any map.

8275e3  No.105555

>>105554

>Q: Why did you work with Buckethead for the music on SIGIL?

<A: Buckethead has been a favorite metal guitarist of mine for a while, and I am so impressed with his output of great music. I feel like I really connect with his playing, and he liked my games as well, so it was a good match. The great MIDI-metal of the original game fit well, and Buckethead’s music really works perfectly with these new maps. Buckethead has a ton of fans, and thought it would be great to show his fanbase that his music fits in with the most metal game of all time.

>Q: Can you talk about working with him on this?

<A: As some of you may know, Buckethead is enigmatic and elusive. Luckily, I was able to get in touch with him. He was excited about making a new song for this megawad, and having some of his amazing Pikes songs included as well. He was very easy to get along with and loves the idea of having his music playing in the background. The custom CD with his music is included in both the boxes.

>Q: How did you choose the music for the levels?

<A: It was a gruelling decision process to choose which Pikes to use in SIGIL. There are literally hundreds of choices to consider. The decision process came down to song length and mood. One of the levels is very dark, so I chose a super creepy song that is really different from the rest. I also like the longer songs to have fast and slow parts that might sync with the action onscreen.

>Q: Are you happy with where id Software has taken the series?

<A: Absolutely. I think DOOM 2016 was an amazing game and deserving of every one of the accolades it got. The team at id is really doing a fantastic job with it, and like everyone else, I am looking forward to DOOM Eternal. To be clear, I don’t have anything to do with either of these games. I’m just a fan like everyone else!

>Q: Are you in touch with the original DOOM® team?

<A: Yes, we talk from time to time. I see Adrian a fair bit since he has a place here in Ireland (The Heritage in Killenard). I also talk with Tom (Hall) and American (McGee) every once in a while. I’m in contact with John where there’s something specific that we both have interest in.

>Q: Looking back on 25 years of history, what do you think is DOOM®’s legacy?

<A: I don’t think any of us knew that DOOM® would have the impact that it has had. That people were asking me to make a full episode more than 23 years later? Genuinely, it’s an incredible honor. Aside from the impact it had on what would become the FPS genre, I believe the most important legacy of DOOM® is its community, the people who have kept it alive for 25 years through the creation of mods and tools. It’s not at all lost on me that I have gone from a creator to a part of the community in that space of time, and I love that. My whole life has been about games, and if I hadn’t been a part of DOOM®’s creation, I would have absolutely been a hardcore member of its community. Another thing that’s been wonderful for me is a story I’ve been hearing a lot lately when I meet fans at tech conferences — they talk about having grown up playing DOOM® with their moms or dads and saying what wonderful memories they have. It’s a sign of DOOM®’s age, for certain, but it’s also a sign of its longevity. There are also so many people who got into tech because of DOOM®.

>Q: Are you working on anything else?

<A: Of course, and it will be done when it’s done. :)

It'll be shit.

Even though Romero can be pretty scummy and retarded at times, he sure as shit isn't a shining beacon in the industry (at least nowadays, back then maybe) and he does deserve a kick in the teeth sometimes. All that being said, I still have some respect for him because of the shit he did for vidya. Now you could argue that the Carmacks were more useful or you could love or hate Romero in general but he still was at the core of id soft. He was still essential for the development of doom, wolfenstein and everything that followed. I always look to id soft's beginnings as part of my inspiration to pursue my own goals in gamedev.

But that's just me, give me shit for it or whatever. I feel like I'm not getting my thoughts out correctly but I'm tired as fuck.

Download: http://www.mediafire.com/file/424z9bp39oiwvr8/Rogue.rar/file

The .rar has the game and a guide. Only the guide is in Spanish so I hope you know that language.

From Wikipedia:

In Rogue, the player assumes the typical role of an adventurer of early fantasy role-playing games. The game starts at the uppermost level of an unmapped dungeon with myriad monsters and treasures. The goal is to fight one's way to the bottom level, retrieve the Amulet of Yendor ("Rodney" spelled backwards), then ascend to the surface. Monsters in the levels become progressively more difficult to defeat. Until the Amulet is retrieved, the player cannot return to earlier levels.

Saw this was posted today. Something about using AI neural network to make proper HD textures for doom. I'm still unsure if it looks 100% good but this archvile example is one hell of a compelling argument. There's also a similar mod but for Morrowind, if anyone was wondering. Should probably post that to the elder scrolls thread.

>Doom purists, here is something special for you today. Earlier today we informed you about a Texture Pack for Morrowind that improves the game’s textures via AI adverserial networks. Well, it appears there is a similar mod for the first Doom that is already available for download.

>Created by Doomworld’s member ‘hidfan’, this HD Texture Pack uses AI NeuralNetworks in order to improve all of the game’s textures. According to the modder, all textures and sprites have been upscaled 8X (with tons of AI artefacts), and then downscaled to a final 2X to restore a pixel art look. Now since there were a lot of AI artefacts, a lot of the HD and improved textures have been manually cleaned and all transparency masks were manually enhanced.

>The end result is a HD Texture Pack that looks as close to the original material as it can possibly be. And since we’ll never ever get an official HD Texture Pack for this classic shooter, I strongly suggest at least testing it.

>The latest version of this texture pack is 0.95 and according to its release notes it adds EndBossBox, cleans mask for Mastermind’s death and front attack frames, stabilizes switches frames and cleans some textures associated with them (BROWN96, BROWNGRN, SLADWALL, ROCK01), improves GRASS1 tiling (still not perfect) and more.

I'm not sure just upping the resolution on textures is going to work with the underlying blocky style of Doom.

>very poor indication of when you're getting hurt coupled with terrible sound design means you can die to a random spider quietly nibbling at your toes

>levels are very poorly designed and entirely one-dimensional, complee with one-way elevators.

<the elevator rises/lowers once, and never moves again

>the game is easy as shit, you can stunlock bosses with the minigun to death

>enemy sprites are all forward-facing only and flat as a board, no depth at all

>no saves, fuck you

>you have a minimap, it' completely fucking useless, has no range and doesn' even show doors/what color they are. shouldn't have included a map at all at this point

>some monsters lose body parts when you kill them instead of dying, but if you have a fire weapon they instantly die, which means you can stick to 2 or 3 weapons the entire game

>some weapon upgrades are actually useless because some weapons share ammo, no reason to upgrade the smg or reguar shotgun over minigun/ssg

>plasmagun is shit

>the movement feels clunky and floaty, couldn't even get movement right on a flat fucking plane

>pixelshit with bloom smeared all over it, some areas are also eye-gougingly dark, which is why you get the flashlight spell. Unless you play on low, then you can see perfectly

Here's a demo for something I've sorta made. It's a mashup of Xaser's Eriguns and some mechanics from Project MSX, Trailblazer and Finaldoomer. I put it together as practice because I've never really made anything besides really stupid basic rudimentary mods like a chaingun that fired bfg rays that did 1 damage each.

You should only play it up until you beat the Programmer, the first real boss. Definitely don't try killing the alien things later on. They seem to be invincible or something. Don't know why

-Make sure you bind keys to GZDoom's 'reload' and 'zoom' keys. 'Reload' is used to swap firing modes for some weapons, and 'zoom' is used for your power fist. Hold it down for maximum power.

-Double-tap 'strafe left', 'strafe right' or 'move backward' to do a dodge. This can be done on the ground & air. On the ground, double-tap 'move forward' and hold to sprint. Release to end. Both cost stamina (blue thing above your armor readout). Stamina regens, after a short delay. If you let it deplete completely, regen is delayed for longer.

-All of the items in your inventory bar can only be used when your weapon is idling. Many of your items like the Hazard Suit, Defense Screen and Stealth Suit are not one-time-use; you can activate and deactivate them to save their charge.

-Ammo, health and armor are scarce, so when you're low on something, buy more from the vendors. Don't count on getting what you need from a map.

-When you complete a mission, you earn Upgrade Credits. These are spent on upgrades for your player, your weapons, and your equipment. You trade them in at vendors, usually Gerard and Feris at the Front Base. I'd change it so you always get them there, but that'd be confusing because the game tells you to go to the town medic & Irale for upgrades. Anyway, you get five credits per completed mission, and all upgrades, regardless of what they are, cost 1 credit. You can pretty much spend them on whatever you want, in no particular order. In the demo, you can only get up to four each of the stamina and accuracy upgrades, and you'll only have access to the first level of the ammo, health pack and armor expansions. You can't get the mods for the slot 5 & 6 weapons.

-Check the 'Erimix Opts' section of the main menu to change some things. You can choose to disable the credit, money & quest item readouts if you think they clutter the HUD, as well as scale how often you see more dangerous versions of the standard guard enemies.

Do you fags think if the original Doom came out in a climate such as this would it do well at all?

4e3829  No.109820

>>109789

Political climate had pretty much nothing to do with Doom's success, it was the technological prowess at the time of release and the gameplay replayability that it showcased what gave it the edge.

Well that, and an absolutely well done BBS shilling/marketting campaing preceding it's release. Which if you compare it to something like today's Indie subcultures, it would be a game that was anticipated for nearly a year and almost EVERY community in the internet (as small as it was back then) was well-aware of it.

Couple this with a free shareware release, meaning everyone that knew about it could play a full episode of the game before buying it proper and the subsequent Sourcecode release, extending its life even further than what it should have, it's no wonder it became such a huge hit.

If you combine all of this, any fucking game in history would have done as well, if not better, than what doom has and still is to this day. Regardless of the political climate or what the game is about anyways.

Update; Genestealers now have more frames when running at people. They, along with the Hybrids, still animate way too fast comprared to everything else. I don't know what else to do besides making them slower, but that only makes them move from spot to spot slower, not animating their frames slower.

Terminator test sprite finished. Now I gotta make it a chooseable player class.

Textures still not animating at all. I don't know what else to do for them. I gotta put them into the TEXTURES Lump, don't I?

Now that I found out about polyobjects, now we can have real sliding doors! Too bad you can't lock them.

I'm also having to dive into the game files this is all from, since there are a few frames/sprirtes that seem missing. Either that or I'm going to have to piece it all together from screenshots.

If anyone has an idea on how to fix this shit, let me know.

I really like Shadow Warrior, so far still on episode one Who Wants Wang(second to hardest difficulty). Wang is a treat to listen to, and a lot of enemies feel really fair to fight. I love the melee weapons, and the explosive weapons, and the shotgun. I'm a bit saddened that the uzis are powerful but don't feel fun to use, but otherwise I like the game a lot.

The Tommy Gun is weird like that. Its best used when you have nearly full ammo and guns akimbo. Otherwise treat it like the minigun from doom, short bursts only. Close up, and its not as good as the Shotgun or flares or whatever.

On one hand a lot of the deaths in Duskmare feel like they're pushing me towards a slower more deliberate playstyle, which is in my opinion just as boring as going around in Shadow Warrior or Blood lobbing grenades and explosives around every corner. On the other hand after a few dozen deaths of going fast and hitting hard and winning a big fight it's actually kind of fun, but one hit deaths aren't really that fun and so is a lack of challenge on any other difficulty.

Fuck it. Its not 100% complete because I can't script for shit. Also I'd like feed back since I'm not sure what to do with the weapons. You'll see what I mean.

The first four maps are just fucking-about style maps. There are no maps between 5 and 10. Map 10 to map 21 are near exact copies of the board game missions. I've omitted the third "campaign," since I haven't been working on them recently. Once you beat Map21, it should go to Doom 2's map22. Oh and it should work with Zandornum(3.0.18242) and GZdoom(2.2.0.0)

NOTE: Map 12( or 11?) Dosen't have an actual end. So once you kill everything, skip to the next map.

Also monster respawns don't work for some reason. Don't worry, I'm trying to fix that.

Good shit, will try it out and back you up with some feedback.

006750  No.122834

Bug wise? The maps should have about 8 monsters on each one. If one has lesss than 8, then let me know. Another bug is that after killing the placeholders on map 12 (or 13?) the game won't end. So thats another map you'll have to cheat to get past. Also, if the animations look like they're too fast, then let me know.

006750  No.122882

>>122650

Ok, minor update. MAP01 should run now. On MAP10; look for the wall that has a computer texture and shoot it. You'll hear Keen dying and that's the end of the level. MAP11 has no end. MAP12 is just grabbing the red key and finding one of two red doors to open. MAP13 dosen't end properly. MAP14 is just finding keen and killing him, again. MAP15 is just flipping the switch on the bottom room and thats it. MAP16 is touching the computer screen walls. MAP17 is flipping the switch. Same with MAP18. MAP19 is fucked and you can leave immediately after you spawn because the end isn't locked. MAP20 is finding Keen, But you can seal the doors that seperate the genestealer spawn points. MAP21 is just running up onto a platform at the end.

That should be it, for now.

>Preacher

>02 Manc behind your spawn

You can just ignore him and fall down to the lower level once he starts moving, there's no reason to fight him at the start even though it's rather easy to dodgw its shots and kill him even on pistol start.

>HD mapset

You're gonna have to map it yourself. Asides from HD, there's only Rainbow Six 1/2/3 Weapons R6W also named Special Weapons for a "tactical" weapons mod and quite honestly, you're better sticking out with HD if you want suffering. I'd also recommend checking out individual maps in mapsets like HellGround or Scythe 2's first three halfs barring ending levels if you want tactical levels that give you some degree of cover and alternative routes of engagement, considering you likely have checked out other easier options like MarsW301, Eviltech or FTH666.
