Light Tank is in game files of RA2 and you can build it with an .ini edit but for Soviets, despite it having Allied look. Probably a hold-over from earlier games like how most of Tiberian Dawn units are in Tib Sun.

If I were to do a reboot of Red Alert I unironically would give Soviets the Light Tank, albeit an amphibious one to take advantage of water more

Generals was supposed to be CnC3 before EA changed it to a modern setting at a whim to exploit the Afghanistan invasion and the starting Iraq War to attract a bigger audience, right before Generals releases EA effectively kills Westwood, names it EA Los Angeles, half the team leave the company for good, the other half is moved from Las Vegas to Los Angeles to consolidate the merger.

Make the team work on 3 different games before they cancel most of them, wasting 4 year of development in retarded endeavours that pressured the devs for no reason other than to milk the franchise.

Company finally releases an ok but dissapointing game on an already outdated engine after 4 fucking years of releasing nothing.

I don't think you understand just how incompetent EA management is to this day.

I'm pretty sure that's not entirely accurate. Especially since early Generals originally looked like Red Alert 2 on cocaine. I do know there development was a shitshow and C&C3 was already in development before Generals released. Also early 2000's was actually a huge shitshow all round for EA. They nearly collapsed in on themselves and were fighting to survive. They cancelled countless projects around that time.

Can I get a quick rundown on the Cossacks games?

I've seen it recommended in threads like rts and totalwar, but never actually talked much about it,

though it looks pretty fucking decent, even the third most recent one

though its an rts, doesn't seem to cater too much to building and development, but still seems to be an integral part of the game

Everything you harvest is needed to maintain large armies (food for obvious reasons, stone and wood for construction, gold for recruitment, upkeep and upgrades and coal and iron so your units can actually shoot) and building extra recruitment facilities and town halls not only allows for faster research and recruitment but also increases your pop limit which results in an endgame where you have 4+ 18th century barracks pumping out musketeers while your town centres build peasants for the ever increasing need of resources that are needed to build more structures and fill the fields, forests, stone quarries and upgraded mines (which can fit IIRC up to 100 peasants when fully upgraded)

I thought it was a neat feature, but it wasn't something i expected in an AoE game. Still i don't think it was the final straw that broke the camels back

Personally I felt the unlimited resources aspect was more game breaking, I mean nearly every faction had a way of getting resources endlessly except the natives, but they were broken in other ways

I felt this made the game too causal, albeit comfy in some aspects

It begins like AoE2 does, but when you get into a late post imperial age game its more along the lines of either having better units than the enemy via factional differences or ageing up faster than them because the late age units were almost always better than early age trash that also cost wood.

Still thats providing you reach the late game, because its pretty easy to crush someone before fourth age

Factional Differences were the main game breaking thing in my opinion, as some factions got single units that trumped entire factions, for example, anything anti infantry or anti-cavalry against the natives is pretty much a go to

The western factions were pretty good altogether, but when versing the natives they ended up stomping them Except Iroquois who had cheap >1000 hp ranged infantry that cost 1 pop

Asian teams were actually the strongest, except for India and sometimes China

Japan was basically a faction that had no weak units, whereas the European factions had at least some weaknesses

China was actually absurdly strong if you could get the right shipments, otherwise absolutely awful if you have no idea how to play them, their inability to build units singular is a major turn off for most players.

India had good units, but was crippled by requiring so much wood, which is generally the hardest resource to get. This made them particularly hard to age up with early game making them easily rushed not to mention useless in maps with low wood

Still they were countered by the strongest European teams, like ottoman, France and Portuguese

Ottoman with absurd artillery meant only very few strategies can stop them steamrolling your base

France had extra resources from workers as well as not bad cavalry unit

Portuguese had those shitty Organ guns, which countered all melee infantry

Apart from all this the game was pretty good, I mean you could counter anything unless you were natives

An for the most part it played like an AoE game, at least at the start

I liked it and i preferred it over C&C3 so its worth a play if you haven't

Also the building destruction was pretty neat

Its not all bad, but its got problems

The factions are a bit too specialized (except for one whose entire specialization was no specialization), several of them were unfinished and some factions are based almost entirely about rushing while others are defending, if you're wondering how that works, it doesn't

My biggest pet peeve is the balkan nations and how they gain resources with different crops and shit. It very uncomfy. Also for some reason most of the starter nations have been nerfed or crippled.

Lets take Germany for example, It gained these artillery factories that could automatically build artillery, however at the rate they pushed out artillery they were almost useless. It doesnt help that you could only build 1 and that there was a bug(?) that let you build 2 and they were still useless

They also nerfed the fuck out of the Uhlans, my favourite german unit they got rid of the horse wagons and gave the Doppelsoldniers to Habsburg.

The worst part is that the changed the model of the uhlan and the doppelsoldnier to look like shit, which i don't understand, if you were going to give habsburg doppelsoldnier why not let Germany keep the old doppelsoldniers? I mean Habsburg already has units that other factions have, why take a way Germany's?

Also Habsburg, despite being one of the best teams has its own problems.

All their units take up absurd amounts of pop, and they all cost gold. This makes them absurdly rushable

However late game they have walls with absurd HP and extremely strong units, however because of the absurd pop use, its almost impossible to fight more than 1 faction at a time which means they're only really good for either team play or 1v1 not rush factions

And don't get me started on Russia,

Spend an entire day leveling up until i could get the giant cannon at lvl 40, put it out and find out its just a one use, i thought it might upgrade the factory cannons

Instead its a one use shipment and brings in a cannon almost equivalent toe the heavy cannon you already get out of factories. It does twice as much damage but as half damage multipliers making it useless

The funniest bug I've found so far is that some of the units in some factions have no image box, meaning that you can never tell if the unit is there or not unless you click on the black squares

Also the game will instantly quit if you use the wrong computer AI

I didnt play much of it and only played Bulgarians and Brazil from the new nations since the mod bugged out and only had like 4 new nations + Germany was missing after I reapplied the no-cd exe like a retard but that crops system was bad and randomly decided to destroy the field after it has been built

After some matches I had enough of it and switched mods the Improvement mod

So I've got Cossacks 3 Gog version, managed to install it under wine and seems to be working reasonably well

however got a weird issue where models show black, like untextured

besides that the game seems to be working reasonably, good framerate, proper menu, audio and all

when looking for this issue I've managed to find pic related which apparently is from the linux "native" version of the game, no wonder

but anyway, haven't been able to pirate that linux version, anyone got any hint where to find it?

Assuming they're just copy&paste of the original European Wars campaings, much like how the game is in skirmish except for some balance changes, they should be pretty damn good.

Sure, some of the missions force you into trial'n'error bullshit like the fucking French campaing or Ukraine's independence campaing, but they were absolutely brimming with charm and were quite difficult even if you knew exactly what to do. I don't think there's an RTS that captures exactly what it was to be an English privateer/pirate captain, pillaging Spanish colonies during the Golden Age of Sail, as well as Cossacks 1 does, the atmosphere is just simply amazing and the gameplay utilizes this to its full extent as well.

By the way, Cossacks 3 music sux. I highly recommend using the original game's music over it, or at least, American Conquest music.

Thanks, guys. It's a shame they didn't implement any new campaign mechanics for Cossacks 3. If at least they implemented some sort of a risk-style map where you'd move your forces around and build up your bases in individual provinces then there would be any reason in getting it. I believe Cossacks 3 is still worth it, if just for the new command & control features, the streamlining of a ton of functions like production, graphics, the actually-working multiplayer lobby that isn't filled with hackers and has a rather caring community at that. And, last but not least, the balance changes that are a whole lot more forgiving for new players in terms of resources required and build orders for a whole lot of things.

Plus, you can actually zoom in-out in Cossacks 3 at will, something you can't even dream of doing in Cossacks EW/AoW/BtW. It helps a LOT because of the absolutely gigantic scale of battles. I'd consider it the only good Remake of a game on this day and age, despite being a brand new entry to the series.

Like the other anon said, Cossacks 3 is a fucking good remake just for the QoL stuff that got added and the ability to now zoom in and out dynamically instead of the fixed two modes of the previous games (that had their shortcut placed directly next to the surrender shortcut) and is worth the money

Just modding is kinda dead since there are only 2 mods worth mentioning that actually add/change things that are not related to music and/or sound effects (State vs Country and Realism di Francesco Cavalli which is"locked" behind steam workshop)

You dont actually build bases in Cossacks 2 though since building up sectors only increases the amount of units stationed there and increases the amount of resources it supplies each turn

I kinda have a feeling that this question was already asked

Anyways, it didn´t offer enough innovation from the older games, nor did it bring back features like morale, special formation animations, reload animations etc. and is extremely lacking on the sound- and music front

However it offers a good amount of QoL stuff like better pathfinding, an actual adjustable camera (not just the two modes the previous games had), better AI and has really good looking 3D visuals

It is still worth the money since its IMO one of the better remakes made these last couple of years

I played it a bit and it was very boring after a while. Matches sorta dissolve into the same basic formula since there are only five units per faction and very specific counters. The lack of QOL features meant every action that I could do and then forget about in another rts had to be micromanaged in ancestors legacy. The campaign was the most enjoyable thing because it kept missions fresh and didn't have a lot of downtime which is another one of the game's core flaws. Since you have no control over units once they engage in combat it becomes a bit of a waiting game every time you battle an enemy unless you reach the point where you control six or more squads and try to flank the enemy or manage multiple areas on the map. Even then combat itself is rather unengaging minus a few active abilities and the lack of units continues to rear its ugly head there. Another thing that wastes time is buildings being created from the town center means they're all qued up one after the other which is rather annoying, really lessens the usefulness of some buildings like the religious places and well. Game suffers from the problem of being slow where it shouldn't be and fast where it doesn't have to.

Some positives though as I've said are the campaign as they provide unique objectives and situations that make up for the repetitiveness elsewhere. Many of the mechanics outside combat itself are very interesting and certainly make the game more enjoyable like ambushes, traps, the night lowering vision, being able to decide what resources a capture point provides. The different faction aesthetics, really the art in general is fantastic if we're getting into technical aspects oh and the music is great too although I'm not sure how varied it is since I've heard quite a few repeats when I played.

Really the game is best before combat actually starts, afterwards it's just managing actives and deciding when to retreat. However with a lack of unit variety and overall repetitiveness even the strategy portion of the game starts being monotonous. The game just needs more options, more options when fighting, more building outside fighting, more traps(there are only 2), more units. The game just needs more before I can give it a recommend.

There's around 4 kind of mayor factions in Cossacks.

There's European nations, which account for about 70% of the playable countries and all play the fucking same with some slight advantages or a certain unique unit.

There's the Eastern factions, which are undoubtly either fucking overpowered as shit, like Ukraine in general after they get a diplomatic center for roundshielders, or they're so incredibly bad the only reason they don't outright die is because they have super strong bonuses in certain ways, like Russia with their incredibly fast buildrates and pikeman conscription. Highly depends on the situation

Then there's the Arabic/Muslim factions, which are stupid strong in the early stages of 17c pikeman combat because of sheer numbers advantage, but get creamed by the millions the instant an 18c army with cannons takes a foothold anywhere on the map. They just win by rushing.

And then there's Switzerland.

They get towers, a lot of them.

You don't fuck with Switzerland.

Anyways, Poland is, i believe, a bogstandard European nation with its main advantages being that it has three unique units: Unarmored but faster-building Pikes, Light Rider Cavalry which is the fastest producing non-mercenary Cavalry in the game and Hussar Cavalry which are the heaviest fast cavalry in the game and can seriously wreck some shit in enemy formations.

1) CnC Generals Shockwave Chaos - very meta-humor, basically generals that mocking it's own gameplay features, multiplayer strategies and narrative. Very good production value.

2) CnC Retarded, for Generals, RA3 and CnC3. Mod name gives it all, very stupid yet fun mod, with stupid music and none less stupid gameplay mechanics and units. Poor in production, mostly reused original assets. Surprisingly well balanced by using broken against broken.

The Hind also while retarded, isn't the worst offender for OpenRA. If I am honest I would have given the Soviets the Light Tank or at least an equivalent myself as they badly need it. Although in such a case it kind of makes sense if you think about it that was Soviet doctrine before WW2 happened, Heavy Breakthrough Tanks flanked with Light Tanks

The real issue is how warped their balance ideas are that don't bring any real balance to the game in the end.
