It's what would happen if hotline miami and blade runner fucked.

Initial 4/10, after spending a few hours learning it and playing it as a casual sort of "Oh I'll pop in and do 20 minutes in between shit I should be doing" kind of thing I'd say 7/10.

Glass windows, gun enemies and doorway glitches: The Game

I give it 8 outta 10, if the first one was 9 outta 10. It drags on a bit too long without introducing any fresh mechanics, and the jungle levels feel out of place, but it's still a great game and the story is excellent.

d32139 No.878

Just finished it, I was really impressed

Great mechanics, solid fun, and a challenging puzzle at times

The story is really hard to follow but it's worth watching the cutscenes to understand some of what's going on, as the actual missions provide zero context and are just puzzles essentially (imagine what portal 2 would be like if you didn't pay attention to the dialogue)

It's basically just the first game with more stuff, can't go wrong with that. I fully recommend playing it

ffcbf2 No.949

It's pretty good. Expanding the story was nice, and the character arcs are interesting, even if most of them are 2 or 3 levels and a few cutscenes.
The gameplay is still good, and the new masks/skills are interesting, but there are so many levels that feel like Hot & Heavy, which is annoying. I'm excited for the level editor, especially since Jacket and Biker are returning.
I'd give the game a 9/10, it's definitely better then HM1, but there are some flaws, and it's a lot more glitchier.

>so many levels that feel like 'Hot & Heavy'

oh god, this and the fat guys with guns were the absolute worst decisions the devs made. whenever those types of levels showed up, the pace of the game nearly halted to a complete stop

shit's just not fun when all you're able to do is trying to cheese the AI by making them run into your melee weapon

d48bc3 No.968[Reply]

Do you think it's possible for video games to have a 'so bad it's good' category or is it simply not possible for bad gameplay to be enjoyable, even if the cutscenes are hammy, over the top, etc.?

I only really saw people get frustrated at that one. I suppose it's all about whether the hilarity of how bad it is outweighing its actual shittiness.

When it first came out and everyone was clamoring for Adventure 3, it caused anger due to that. It's well known nowadays to be utter shit, but going into it with no expectations and playing it can be fun as fuck.

Anyone actually follow "Esports" here? I've been watching Dota on and off for the last few years, but the constant team reshuffles make it hard to stay attached. Also, the lack of new faces is a bit discouraging. Other games haven't really caught my interest.

you can but it's a mouthful and doesn't adequately describe the system of sponsored teams competing in LANs for prize money streamed for the enjoyment of spectators.

That would probably make streamers and speedrunners professional gamers too, which is too different.

I completely agree on difficulty, I hate it when games like TES just make enemies have more health and strength thus causing the game to just have fluff and alienate players who wanted the AI itself to be good.

Usually, in the situation you mentioned, the time it takes to get to the end matters to me because there wasn't enough of it, especially if it were a game with little to no customization or good sidequests. In that situation, if I replay it I will just be bored as I've already done exactly that, and, if I don't, I will feel like I was a bit cheated in terms of money. I feel cheated on the money because that usually means the last few levels or parts or chapters of the game didn't do well enough at wrapping up the game and making it feel like a great end. It probably would have extended the game length if it did wrap it up well enough for me.

Usually, for a game to feel wrapped up properly to me, I have to feel like a master at it by the last 5-20 percent of the game, which mostly only varies for me based on length. By the very end, I should probably feel like I fought a boss that could only be beat by a master in that last section.

I don't care whether I'm slapping shit in ancient China or Japan, but I've just got no idea what the merits are for each game that came after. Although I do know enough to stay away from the DS outings, and I don't have a WiiU, so the Zelda one's out, I'd really like a bit of guidance here.

>They do seem like a company that's 'one step forwards, one step back'.

The Bladestorm do-over, Nightmare seems like the perfect example. I haven't played it, or the original yet, but it seems to do a lot of neat things, while not incorporating the best parts of their other series. That is, combat itself looks boring as hell, but there's a lot of cool tactical window-dressing.

In a perfect world they'd make Bladestorm and Orochi their Darkstalkers to DW and SW's Street Fighter - testing grounds for cool ideas that they can get right, then import to the main series without fanboys of the latter two getting too butthurt. Instead they go shifting about the main series while not really innovating with their million and three offshoots.

>They should have all been replaced with named characters.

That would've made the "Oh, fuck, it's Lu Bu!" moment much more satisfying.

>DW6 optional goals

Whilst it was poorly implemented, at least it was there. I hate having to look up guides for every last unlock online. Why take that out? People are still going to buy your strat guides to find out how to do it (both copies in Glorious Nippon) - why not at least give a hint?

Same reason they took out the series staple of surveying the battlefield before you go in in DW8, I guess. Maybe there's a fluff reason of not having perfect knowledge of where every general is, but I reckon it's just plain shitty.

Unfortunately they might feel it's too risky to start messing with the formula. I heard Hyrule Warriors had some differences with the item usage but I haven't played it.

I might have confused myself. Are we talking about the first Hulao Gate mission or the very last one?

Though his introduction was great. The cutscenes are hit and miss overall. Some of them get a bit too cheesy for my taste and one or two were just cringe-worthy.

Same. My local has it for five dollarydoos, so it will get a spin once I've exhausted myself of DW8 and Orochi 2.

Thing is, like we've identified in this thread, they're constantly messing with it, even in the "core" series.

And yet I can't even hate on that facet, because despite there being far too many games (and too many series), each one is subtly different. Some, obviously, are more worthy of being played than others...

>Are we talking about the first Hulao Gate mission or the very last one?

I was talking about the first one. I don't think I've played the last one in DW6 (only finished the a couple of Shu stories).

Not that I particularly think television and film awards are great but video game awards seem to always fall even further below the bar.

The recent video game BAFTAs had some good examples of what not to do.

You can see all of the categories, winners and nominees here: http://awards.bafta.org/award/2015/games

The first main issue is that DLC (The Last of Us: Left Behind) is being judged on the same level as full games. It's a game - it's part of a game. In its defence the rest of the games in the Best Story category didn't have particularly fantastic stories, but still Best DLC should be its own category. It's simply not equal even if it is DLC 'Oscar bait'. The same goes for Best Performer: Ashley Johnson has won the same award twice in a row for the same character because she played the character again in a bonus chapter. It makes little sense.

Minecraft: Console Edition won Best Family Game. A game that came out in 2011 gets a go at the 2015 BAFTAs because of the console version (which first came out in 2012 but the new PSBone release is special?). Simply put: new editions of games - unless they get a huge overhaul to the point that it could be considered a different game - shouldn't count as new releases. Is the lastest re-release of Resident Evil going to win a new award because it's recent?

The Game Innovation award went to a walking simulator that wasn't all that innovative. Some of the other nominees weren't innovative either: Titanfall is your standard FPS, for example. Overall it seems like a poor category to have since plenty of games simply follow a standard formula and still manage to be good.

Mobile and Handheld are one category. The Dorito Pope Awards did this as well. I don't understand how they think they're the same just because they're on a small screen and all have touch screen controls now.

Destiny won Best Game. A rather forgettable game but so were some of the other nominees.

Organizations like BAFTA are for wankers that are trying to carve out a niche for their parasitic psuedo intellectualism in video games, because they couldn't make it as art or literature critics. Their entire existence depends on people believing that their opinion somehow matters more because they're more educated. These fucks call themselves "ludologists" because saying "I overanalyze video games." when asked what their profession is would get them laughed at by their liberal arts colleagues.

That's certainly part of it but I think a good portion of the people who work for/on the BAFTAs just simply don't care. They care about the films and television side of it because it matters (slightly) whereas nobody cares about the video game BAFTAs. It's not worth anything and the fact they don't care to do a good enough job or try to understand the medium is why it'll never matter.

Judging vidya like movies is retarded. Then again, judging movies like movies is also retarded. Art criticism is fucked.

Do you mean art should never be critiqued?

Or that these days it's merely an elaborate PR circle-jerk?

I mean that the whole field of art criticism has been rotten to the core for over a hundred years. It only exists to promote and hype up talentless trash, so the people who own said trash can use it as collateral for bigger loans. Anyone who points it out just "doesn't get it", so it's like the emperors new clothes. artists can't call them out because art critics determine the price of art.
