Game Design: Going Back To Square 2 Edition

Fuck me, I came here just as the board kinda died. Sucks as this place actually seems to be about game design rather than shit posting unlike /v/.

My question is, how do you tell a story in a video game without having to resort to cutscenes or turning your game into a walking simulator? Or without having to do pseudo cutscenes parts in your game like half life 2 did where you'd stand and do nothing while npcs talked. How do you get player driven games to tell a cohesive story while not resorting to using different mediums like films and literature.

Keeping in mind that games are player driven, is it possible to convey emotions on the same level as a book or movie? With a book, the story can be conveyed through description and usage of words and sentence format. With movies, scenes can be portrayed through the usage of the camera, how a shot moves and can be viewed, and through actors, while a game uses player input, and how well the player can be guided while also challenged and invested in gameplay moments. What's tough about video games is that the player is involved with making a moment. This stems from the fact that video game are still partially toys, no matter how you look at them. While other forms of artistic entertainment really only require the audience's attention, vgs need player input. The problem is, the artist/designer then doesn't have 100% control over how certain events line up. How do you balance player involvement/interest with what the designer wants the player to do.

For me, there are 4 major genres of entertainment that can be mixed together, and are usually set and stone for each artistic medium. That is horror, drama, comedy, and action. With video games, I think we got horror and action to be fairly decent. Don't get me wrong, both of those genres need a shit ton of work still, but for now, they show signs of being on a semi decent track in terms of being interpreted in a video game format. It's drama and comedy that concerns me a bit.

More so comedy than drama. With drama, it takes traditional character development for a player to care about an npc or even the main character. The thing is, that really only works for rpg games, where traditional character/story development is more sensical and focused on. How would you get a player invested in a story while still keeping things player driven, and without resorting to cutscenes? How do you strike a balance between player involvement and story? With comedy, that shits even worse. Comedy usually requires strict timing and delivery. In a game, the player's playthrough varies upon whose playing, making the designers job a bit of hell to know how to implement comedic antics. Making jokes through dialogue doesn't count, as that's really just literature/radio form. How do you tell a joke, or even have a comedic moment in video games without having to have, LOLSORANDOM or SoStupidWackyorBadThatItsFunny moments?

Do we have to have completely rethink how to convey drama and comedy to fit into video games? Cause the way things are going on right now, both triple A high budget games and indie games are failing to not only innovate, but also finding a way to get video games their own identities. Meanwhile, the "gamer" community is to busy trying to turn gaming culture into a fashion to notice that they're eating shit. Sorry if this mini blog went in all directions, but I'm tired as fuck and I wanted to sperg out my opinions somewhere were hopefully people truly take game design seriously and not just jack off to the idea of video games. Anyways, I could go on for literally pages on game design, but I want you guys to discuss.

The Future of the classic RTS

Seeing as this board actually talks about games (unlike /v/)

What do you guys think the future of classic style rts games are?

With the exception of a few games like world of goo, the market really hasn't seen any big old school rts games in awhile.

ITT: Games you always recommend

Go play Ikaruga right now, fucker. It's a shmup where you shoot and dodge white and black bullets. You absorb bullets that are the same color as your ship, and do more damage to enemies that are a different color than you. The game is simple but very challenging.

It's a great gateway into the shmup genre.

Hello, /videogames/. I just wanted to let you know that I'm the new board owner of >>>/kind/, and I'd appreciate it if you'd take the time to drop in and say hello. Metrocide

It's what would happen if hotline miami and blade runner fucked.

Initial 4/10, after spending a few hours learning it and playing it as a casual sort of "Oh I'll pop in and do 20 minutes in between shit I should be doing" kind of thing I'd say 7/10.

Hotline Miami 2 is out. What's the verdict?

Glass windows, gun enemies and doorway glitches: The Game

I give it 8 outta 10, if the first one was 9 outta 10. It drags on a bit too long without introducing any fresh mechanics, and the jungle levels feel out of place, but it's still a great game and the story is excellent.

So Bad It's Good

Do you think it's possible for video games to have a 'so bad it's good' category or is it simply not possible for bad gameplay to be enjoyable, even if the cutscenes are hammy, over the top, etc.?

Esports

Anyone actually follow "Esports" here? I've been watching Dota on and off for the last few years, but the constant team reshuffles make it hard to stay attached. Also, the lack of new faces is a bit discouraging. Other games haven't really caught my interest.

Also lets just get this out of the way:
I know it's a stupid name, but saying "esports is not a sport" is like saying "e-mail is not mail". You're right but it's a pedantic argument.

You're elected president of Video Games. You can now put a genre or game idea on moratorium for a few years. Anyone attempting to make a game that fits the genre will be hanged. What do?

Confess ye sins here.

Dynasty Warriors +

>only just recently pick up Samurai Warriors 2
>decide I rather enjoy it
>think missions could be more varied, but overall enjoy slapping shit out of lowly samurai

Which of its innumerable sequels do I grab next, /textv/? There's so fucking many.

I don't care whether I'm slapping shit in ancient China or Japan, but I've just got no idea what the merits are for each game that came after. Although I do know enough to stay away from the DS outings, and I don't have a WiiU, so the Zelda one's out, I'd really like a bit of guidance here.

Or you can ignore my plea for recommendations and potted summaries, and just talk about your fave levels and characters, instead.

Video Game Awards Thread

Not that I particularly think television and film awards are great but video game awards seem to always fall even further below the bar.

The recent video game BAFTAs had some good examples of what not to do.

You can see all of the categories, winners and nominees here: http://awards.bafta.org/award/2015/games

The first main issue is that DLC (The Last of Us: Left Behind) is being judged on the same level as full games. It's a game - it's part of a game. In its defence the rest of the games in the Best Story category didn't have particularly fantastic stories, but still Best DLC should be its own category. It's simply not equal even if it is DLC 'Oscar bait'. The same goes for Best Performer: Ashley Johnson has won the same award twice in a row for the same character because she played the character again in a bonus chapter. It makes little sense.

Minecraft: Console Edition won Best Family Game. A game that came out in 2011 gets a go at the 2015 BAFTAs because of the console version (which first came out in 2012 but the new PSBone release is special?). Simply put: new editions of games - unless they get a huge overhaul to the point that it could be considered a different game - shouldn't count as new releases. Is the lastest re-release of Resident Evil going to win a new award because it's recent?

The Game Innovation award went to a walking simulator that wasn't all that innovative. Some of the other nominees weren't innovative either: Titanfall is your standard FPS, for example. Overall it seems like a poor category to have since plenty of games simply follow a standard formula and still manage to be good.

Mobile and Handheld are one category. The Dorito Pope Awards did this as well. I don't understand how they think they're the same just because they're on a small screen and all have touch screen controls now.

Destiny won Best Game. A rather forgettable game but so were some of the other nominees.

I don't think video game awards are ever going to be good but the BAFTAs weren't even trying.

ITT: Fresh platformer ideas

The market for 2d indie platformers is saturated to the point where nothing is good or interesting anymore. Your task is to come up with a gameplay mechanic in a platformer that has NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE. No time travel (Braid), controlling multiple characters at once (Mario World). grappling hooks (Umihara Kawase). Give it your best shot. Any kind of item, powerup, or level that has yet to be attempted.

I may or may not be a lazy and uncreative game developer coming here to steal your ideas, but please go ahead and post them anyways:

The new city building game published by Paradox Interactive and developed by the people who did Cities in Motion series will be coming to steam on March 10th.

Space Station 13

Hey guys, ever played space station 13? Literally amazed me with the simplistic complexity and the sheer amount of random shit you can do. Imagine your assigned a job on a space station. A job that matters, a crew member along side maybe 20 others. Each crew member has a role and some more important than others. And then there are antagonists. Randomely selected each round events can trigger. And a station run by a bunch of strangers loosely working together are plunged into chaos. THIS GAME IS THE SHIT! Also, HONK.

Reduced Tolerance for Boredom: Am I a Casual?

Whenever I get bored of a game, I stop playing.

If my sole reason for playing is to improve something in-game (e.g. the hub, character's equipment, etc) I'll stop playing. I'd rather spend the effort of self improvement on myself and my life, where I'll get money, skills, status and stuff. Also, grinding for equipment and the like just makes the game easier. In other words, it's a difficulty slider you have to work for.

If my sole reason for playing is the story, I'll likely stop. It's rare that a video game's story is more captivating than a film, TV show, anime or even a history book.

I look towards hours of completion for a game and hope for something <5 hours. Anything more than that and I feel as though it's just adding padding.

More and more I gravitate towards 'casual' and roguelikelike games, for the instant challenge and involvement. If I spend too long on a tutorial, travelling around or watching bad cutscenes, I'm bored and I'll stop.

I used to love doing completionist stuff when I was a kid, because it gave me goals and rewards. Now I'm living on my own and have my life to invest in.

Who else feels something similar?

Alternatives to death

What are some good (non point and click) games where you can't die? Dying can sometimes take people out of the game if it happens too much, so I'm wondering if there are any games with creative alternatives to it.

Here's an example from a game I recently found called Uncanny Valley:

>Uncanny Valley's main difference from other games is a thing we like to call the consequence system. Whenever you fail at something, the game goes on, but with harsh consequences for your character that can impact both the story and the gameplay.

>For example - you fail at avoiding your attackers, meaning your character will move slower throughout the game, making it harder to escape future pursuers, so the player needs to be careful and more clever, which adds more tension to the game. Of course, there are a couple of sections where you can die, but we're trying to avoid that as much as possible.

>Why? Because dying and repeating the same section over and over is tedious and leads to frustration. The game stops being scary if you're angry and just want to rush through it, so we think that adding such a system will still keep the tension while adding a new layer to scariness.

Difficulty Settings on games

Do you play games first in Easy/Normal mode, or try Hardcore/Nightmare modes right from the start? Why? Which games?

I just started playing Tales of Zestiria on Second, because I'm used to tales games but I didn't want to grind as much as Hard requires. I usually try to play games on Normal difficulty from the start, because that seems the way they created them to be, but sometimes I don't feel challenged unless I crank it up a little. However there are games that are impossible if you play them on hard. What are your experiences?

everything went better than expected.jpg

What games did you dismiss out of hand, only to have them pleasantly surprise you, /textv/?

>hate on the Dynasty Warriors series for its apparent simplicity

>and also for Koei releasing them like Maddens
>holy fuck, I know the Three Kingdoms period was long, but do we really need that many?
>and then came the samurai
>and the crossovers
>and the Gundams
>and the One-Pieces
>and fucking Zelda, of all things
>actually sit down with one of the Nip versions

Subject line most definitely related.

I still stand by my initial assessment that it's largely button-mashing popcorn, but I can't say I haven't had fun with it. The ebb and flow of battle as reinforcements arrive and events get triggered. The balancing act of trying to slaughter every last thing while accomplishing your missions in a respectable time. The huge amount of stuff to unlock.

And I've learned a few things about Japanese history. Things like Shingen and Kenshin's damn near chivalrous war for territory in the middle of the country; Honda Tadakatsu's unwavering loyalty to the Tokugawa clan; and how Hideyoshi Toyotomi actually had an epic bromance with David Schwimmer.

I'm not eager to line Koei's pockets further, but from now on I won't pass them up so quickly when they're sitting in the bargain bin.

How about you guys?

Civcraft Thread

Let's play some Minecraft together /videogames/.

A bunch of folks from different boards are getting together to play some Civcraft, a modified version of Minecraft with a heavy emphasis on political, economic, and social interaction between and within player-established states.

The state being formed presently is Chanos, a small nation in the southeast. It is composed of provinces representing different boards and communities, each with a high degree of autonomy under a single federal government. How provinces are organized is up to the community.

Mire (Lynchwood) ~ -13091x 7130z

HOW TO NOT GET FUCKED BY REDDITORS (A NEWFAG GUIDE):
1. Don't grief or steal on the way to Chanos.
2. If you must take food from farms, replant the seeds.
3. Spawned too far away? Kill yourself and respawn until your closer.
4. Find your ways to cities; they are often connected by railways that can get you close by.
5. Closest station to us is Isle of Arran.
6. Don't grief any private property in Chanos.
7. Don't be afraid to ask for help!

Note: Server is going through some issues, it'll go through a few restarts tonight until they get resolved.

What 4x (Explore, Expand,Exploit, Exterminate) games have you been playing?

Right now I'm into Distant Worlds, a space 4x while playing Civ 5 on the side. Thinking about getting Endless Legend the next time it's on sale. That game looks like a way better version of Civ 5.

Thimbleweed Park

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/thimbleweedpark/thimbleweed-park-a-new-classic-point-and-click-adv

If you remember, a long time ago Ron Gilbert made a kickstarter for a game called Thimbleweed Park.. It's a point and click adventure in the vein of Maniac Mansion. It even tries to appeal to nostalgiafags and makes the graphics like Maniac Mansion. So far the game seems pretty interesting, but there's just one thing that's bugging me: the interface.

I understand they're trying to appeal to people's nostalgia for Maniac Mansion, but including this old, clunky, outdated interface baffles me. It doesn't add anything to the game, it just make it take a few seconds longer to interact with something. I can already tell its more stuff I have to click on if I get stuck and have to start using objects randomly, (which will probably happen at least once since this is a point and click adventure game). Modern adventure games got it right with their interface.

Is there anything good about this old interface? This really just looks like a case of people willing to put up with bad game design because of nostalgia.

League of Legends all female tournament to allow gay males and trans... but with limits

http://esports.garena.ph/newsArticle.php?contentid=00000600&cat=NEWS&subcat=LEAGUE+OF+LEGENDS%5C

League of Legends all-female tournament to allow transgender and gay male players to participate, but are limited to one per team.

>1) Each team will be allowed to have a maximum of one (1) Gay/Transgendered woman for the entirety of the tournament day. Therefore, teams cannot do the following: Team_A's first game will be 4 female members and 1 gay, then on Team_A's second game, they will have 4 female members and replace with another gay or transgender member.

Does anyone else find it fucking hilarious how hard theyre trying to quantify oppression? By being "more inclusive" they just pissed off more people. Women are complaining about having to play with males, gays are complaining that they're grouped up with women, trannies are complaining that its not fair that they're limited to one per team. A shitstorm is inevitable.

Valve to unveil OpenGL successor this march.

So apparently valve is making the next OpenGL, called GLnext. This is supposed to make openGL easier to develop on, so we might see more games made on it, and perhaps more cross platform games for PC.
