Front page isn't updated at all for some reason. You can see which threads were bumped in the catalog but you can't see last comments. This makes the board harder to use.

I know you have no control over it, that's just the site being fucked beyond repair by lack of maintenance. But maybe you can ask whoever still cares even a bit about it to fix the problem. Or just move to Infinity and leave an announcement here, I don't know.

Fuck me, I came here just as the board kinda died. Sucks as this place actually seems to be about game design rather than shit posting unlike /v/.

My question is, how do you tell a story in a video game without having to resort to cutscenes or turning your game into a walking simulator? Or without having to do pseudo cutscenes parts in your game like half life 2 did where you'd stand and do nothing while npcs talked. How do you get player driven games to tell a cohesive story while not resorting to using different mediums like films and literature.

Keeping in mind that games are player driven, is it possible to convey emotions on the same level as a book or movie? With a book, the story can be conveyed through description and usage of words and sentence format. With movies, scenes can be portrayed through the usage of the camera, how a shot moves and can be viewed, and through actors, while a game uses player input, and how well the player can be guided while also challenged and invested in gameplay moments. What's tough about video games is that the player is involved with making a moment. This stems from the fact that video game are still partially toys, no matter how you look at them. While other forms of artistic entertainment really only require the audience's attention, vgs need player input. The problem is, the artist/designer then doesn't have 100% control over how certain events line up. How do you balance player involvement/interest with what the designer wants the player to do.

For me, there are 4 major genres of entertainment that can be mixed together, and are usually set and stone for each artistic medium. That is horror, drama, comedy, and action. With video games, I think we got horror and action to be fairly decent. Don't get me wrong, both of those genres need a shit ton of work still, but for now, they show signs of being on a semi decent track in terms of being interpreted in a video game format. It's drama and comedy that concerns me a bit.

More so comedy than drama. With drama, it takes traditional character development for a player to care about an npc or even the main character. The thing is, that really only works for rpg games, where traditional character/story development is more sensical and focused on. How would you get a player invested in a story while still kePost too long. Click here to view the full text.

Most "interesting" gameplay mechanics you've seen implemented in games ?

This board being alive would be a nice mechanic.

Well ya, but you know this could HELP

well anyhow i've been focusing on the economics coding in the Guild 2 and its one of the most interesting mechanics i've seen in forever

019b29 No.1073

>>1071

For that to happen we'd need more than 4 or 5 anons with very diverging interests. I can't talk about console games because I've played at most 4 of them, for example.

Lost odyssey the dark caves.

82de26 No.1020

Some level on Hotline Miami

Based on my previous attempts at getting through it, I'd say that this one in particular seems to rely a lot on luck to win

I am doing a melee-only playthrough though, so I guess I can only really blame myself

9c67d5 No.1021

I've been stuck in FF Crystal Chronicles, Ring of Fates.

There's no way to get up the town to the heriophant past this one floor. I'm convinced the game is just broken or has a bug.

6d2988 No.1066

Imperium Galactica.

Had to reload from an old savegame because Dargslans decided to show up early. IIRC some of the other factions dragged them into my corner of the galaxy.

Haven't touched it in what feels like half a year.

The last expansion for HoMM IV, whatever it is called.

The two or three new monsters introduced in this expansion are the only opponents you get in the new campaign so it is a soul-crushing crawl at a glacial pace.

M.A.X.

Replaying the campaign, currently on second mission. Really tough on the hardest difficulty setting so every time I think about pushing through I remember how much micro that requires and it just kills the mood.

Might and Magic VI-VIII.

Nothing stopping me from continuing aside from overdose on fantasy I guess.

Syndicate.

One of my mice is slowly dying so a real-time game depending on a well working mouse is a no-go. So, too lazy to plug a different one, guess I just don't really want to continue it yet.

X-COM: UFO Defense and X-COM: Terror from the Deep.

Switched to UFO: Aftershock for a while to relieve some stress.

0447f4 No.1068

Dwarf Fortress. Reading through the wiki quickstarter guide. Haven't read much but I'm definitely starting to see the pieces fall into place. Can't wait untill I can play without having to rely on seconhand information.

Smash Melee. Not really stuck as the game isn't hard at all. I've given myself a handicap attempting to collect every trophy with the minimum difficulty setting of easy, but preferably nomral. Some characters simply suck balls.

>>1021

>I've been stuck in FF Crystal Chronicles

Desert level? That puzzle is incredibly obtuse, feel no shame checking a guide. If not, give me a hint as to the location/level giving you trouble and i'll try and steer you in the right direction without spoiling the fun.

Wow this board is very very comfy.

You know what's a comfy game for me to play? Katamari Damacy. Such a great game to play from the comfort of a quilt, don't you agree?

974ae3 No.1050

I think katamari is up there with tetris. Great fun but very simplistic. Don't forget to play the sequel. Can't comment on the psp version, although I've read it doesn't really deviate from the standard formula.

Another game that makes me feel nice 'n comfy is rollercoaster tycoon. I prefer the first over the second because in it you can charge for park admission as well as the rides. In the second it is only one or the other.

7deadc No.338[Reply]

Seeing as this board actually talks about games (unlike /v/)

What do you guys think the future of classic style rts games are?

With the exception of a few games like world of goo, the market really hasn't seen any big old school rts games in awhile.
4 posts omitted. Click reply to view.

9aae96 No.686

Did anybody play Grey Goo? I was interested up until release, when the full price was revealed and apparently some people were experiencing performance problems, so I decided to wait.

Re: ASSFAGGOTS

I really don't think they actually require less of a time commitment to play. They have a far lower skill ceiling and the gameplay is stale, but they require a huge time investment on the part of the players. Because of the focus on team-based competitive play you're expected to play even a losing match out the full duration with baddie pubs or face consequences. You're expected to know the ins and outs of what is regardless a shallow game yet with a steep knowledge curve, so you end up studying shit that isn't meaningful and gets turned on its head at the next patch.

I play FPS primarily but each round is shorter, with most matches lasting 15-20 mins each and drop-in/drop-out play. A match of League on the other hand requires you to play anywhere upwards of 30 minutes for a single match, you will probably lose a lot, and over all it just feels really unrewarding.

At least with classic RTS it was considered bm to let a match drag on any more than it needed to. in Dota/LoL it's almost considered necessary because you "play to win".

800112 No.918

>>686
I got it and honestly i liked how it went back to a more mid 2000s rts gameplay and i'm really hoping to see more games go in that direction

PS. wait till the price goes down

a6b322 No.1028

>>918

Does it still have an active-ish playerbase? Do you see potential for growth in it? I've been interested in it after seeing that it was being developed by former Westwood devs (though honestly statements like that don't mean anything anymore) but the hope is still there.

d1ce8d No.1029

Custom games for Dota 2 are out (in "beta", but still). Pretty sure there's already been some people that tried to add base building and other classic RTS mechanics. Won't take long until somebody tries a full-blown clone of BW or WC3. Kinda ironic when you think about it.

Cossacks 3? No way. I've been a fan since the 90s. EW was one of my first video games. I'm looking at some of the media and it looks pretty cool. I can't wait to play it. I hope they won't mess it like what happens to most modern games.

Go play Ikaruga right now, fucker. It's a shmup where you shoot and dodge white and black bullets. You absorb bullets that are the same color as your ship, and do more damage to enemies that are a different color than you. The game is simple but very challenging.

It's a great gateway into the shmup genre.

Personally, no.

There are a couple of neat tweaks in BGEE, but those aren't enough to make me pony up for a bunch of Mary Sues and somebody going to the effort of slapping a frontend on a bunch of mods that have served me well for many years already.

And I haven't inspected IDEE, but that game wouldn't be the same without its clunky interface.

I regularly buy copies of Terraria to gift to imageboard people who are either going to pirate it or are on the fence about buying it. I also managed to convince one of my older friends who mostly just plays faster-paced shooters to give it a go, and he seems to be enjoying it. It is ridiculously fun and I really hope all the people I've gifted it to are enjoying playing it.

What version of of Cave Story is best? I'm not even sure what the 'original' release is.

There's a whole bunch here.

http://www.cavestory.org/download/cave-story.php

Then one that was pushed onto Steam by another guy (Is that even legal.)

http://cavestory.wikia.com/wiki/Cave_Story%2B

Then Cave Story 3D, so much of game engine would have to have been changed to make this work. Is any of Pixels code even there any more?

http://cavestory.wikia.com/wiki/Cave_Story_3D

Then a WiiWare one.

http://cavestory.wikia.com/wiki/Cave_Story_%28WiiWare%29

Some of them have a 'Curly Story mode', was that actually written bu Pixel or not?
