What games did you dismiss out of hand, only to have them pleasantly surprise you, /textv/?
>hate on the Dynasty Warriors series for its apparent simplicity
>and also for Koei releasing them like Maddens
>holy fuck, I know the Three Kingdoms period was long, but do we really need that many?
>and then came the samurai
>and the crossovers
>and the Gundams
>and the One-Pieces
>and fucking Zelda, of all things
>actually sit down with one of the Nip versions
Subject line most definitely related.
I still stand by my initial assessment that it's largely button-mashing popcorn, but I can't say I haven't had fun with it. The ebb and flow of battle as reinforcements arrive and events get triggered. The balancing act of trying to slaughter every last thing while accomplishing your missions in a respectable time. The huge amount of stuff to unlock.
And I've learned a few things about Japanese history. Things like Shingen and Kenshin's damn near chivalrous war for territory in the middle of the country; Honda Tadakatsu's unwavering loyalty to the Tokugawa clan; and how Hideyoshi Toyotomi actually had an epic bromance with David Schwimmer.
I'm not eager to line Koei's pockets further, but from now on I won't pass them up so quickly when they're sitting in the bargain bin.
How about you guys?

> Keep hearing about how the Metal Gear series is so good.
> Learn it has tons of cutscenes, and I don't like cutscenes or story in anything but rpgs and point and click games.
> Think people only like it cause of cutscenes.
> Think if people only like its story then the gameplay must be shit.
> Watch SuperBunnyhop's retrospective on the series.
> Kind of interested but still think I won't enjoy them.
> Decide to pick up 2 and 3 on a whim later at a used game shop.
> Holy shit its actually good.
I hate to use MGS as an example since it's mentioned so often on 8chan but it really is the best example of this I could think of. MGS3 is now probably one of the best games I've ever played, if not my favorite game. I have not seen many games that can be so cutscene heavy and still have really great gameplay. It seems most games can only do good gameplay or good story/cutscenes but MGS3 seems to be able to do both well.

>>532I enjoyed MGS a long time after it was released, but thought MGS2 dragged on a bit too much, made all the worse by how fucking waffly and self-important the not-very-interesting story was.
I avoided MGS3 and beyond because I figured that's just the way Kojima was taking things, and I didn't want to be along for the ride.
But in the spirit of this thread, I guess I'm finally going to give it a shot. Thanks, anon.
