The market for 2d indie platformers is saturated to the point where nothing is good or interesting anymore. Your task is to come up with a gameplay mechanic in a platformer that has NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE. No time travel (Braid), controlling multiple characters at once (Mario World). grappling hooks (Umihara Kawase). Give it your best shot. Any kind of item, powerup, or level that has yet to be attempted.

I may or may not be a lazy and uncreative game developer coming here to steal your ideas, but please go ahead and post them anyways:

I'd like to see more platformers with skill based movement, like surfing or rocket jumping, but in 2D. A sanic clone where you could rocket jump to boost yourself even faster at the expense of your health would be neat.

Fuck it, I just want a good 2d sonic game. Is that too much to ask for?

You control the stage, not the character.

How will that work? What will it do? Fuck if I know. I'm no game designer.

You have a limited amount of movement / number of jumps

It's entirely first person, while still being 2D.

It has no jumping, only falling.

You don't take damage from spikes.

I was actually thinking about making a rocket jumping platformer the other day, but it might be boring in 2D.

Like Pinball.

every action you make in the game makes a clear and recognizable sound. every moving object in the game makes a recognizable sound. After you get far enough into the level to get the treasure chest, you become cursed with blindness. The player can no longer see his character or the level, just a black screen. The player must make his way back through the level relying only on his memorization skills and his hearing ability. Levels would be short and contain no enemies. If the player dies, the screen is no longer black and shows a replay of what happened so the player knows how he died. Player can choose to restart at the beginning of the level or after the curse.

That sounds incredibly frustrating, satan.

Your character would always be in the center of the screen so you could always tell where the character is on screen regardless if you can see him or not. You don't immediately fall off ledges, your character makes a little noise, telling you to jump or go backwards. If you do nothing after 10 seconds you fall off. Sounds would get louder the closer you are to them, and softer the farther away you are.

It would be hard to balance, but I think if it is done well it could be a fun game.

Remember when you unlocked the rapid fire gun in Cave Story and could propel yourself over obstacles?

Shit was stupid fun.

Oh, that's a great idea. I'd forgotten about the machine gun.
Come to think of it, you can "surf" and "climb" with the plasma gun in Quake III, so there's precedent there as well.
Thanks for the tip.

Sideview Super Monkey Ball? Might be cool.
