Do you think it's possible for video games to have a 'so bad it's good' category or is it simply not possible for bad gameplay to be enjoyable, even if the cutscenes are hammy, over the top, etc.?

Driver 3 is in this category for me. I've only played the PS2 version, but it's shitty in all the right ways to the point I'd put it in my top 25 best PS2 games somewhere if I ever made that list.

d09d0d No.970

Unlike movies and some books, I don't think I can enjoy games with shitty gameplay. With movies you can just grin and bear it and wait it out when it's shit, and with books you can skip pages if you really wanted to, but there's nothing like that for shitty games (assuming you aren't cheating)

Decent gameplay might trump shitty cutscenes, art direction or storyline, but then you've just got yourself a halfway decent game, right?

Uhm, if done on purpose and with a point to its banality, maybe. Like trying to satirize other video game tropes.

Pretty much. I consider the cutscenes from Castlevania: Lament of Innocence to be 'so bad it's good' material (hammy acting, bad dialogue, overdramatic, etc.) but the gameplay is average. Any charm from hilariously bad films is gone when it turns into something you have to deal with, the gameplay. I guess that's the issue.

It's been a while since I've played it but I always considered Final Fantasy: Dirge of Cerberus to be in this category - I guess it's somewhat possible to make average gameplay that is stupid enough to be both good and bad.

It is possible. Sonic 2006 is a testament to that alone. It's so broken that it's wonderful somehow.

I only really saw people get frustrated at that one. I suppose it's all about whether the hilarity of how bad it is outweighing its actual shittiness.

Like laughing at bad AI. It can be annoying and amusing, depends what it does wrong.

When it first came out and everyone was clamoring for Adventure 3, it caused anger due to that. It's well known nowadays to be utter shit, but going into it with no expectations and playing it can be fun as fuck.

The gems alone make up for the effort of playing.

IWBTG is astheticaly pleasing in another kind of way. Not so much about lvl design but rather about gameplay. It's charming to have a game thats fair and unfair, humerous and frustrating at the same time.

d09d0d No.986

I don't think I'd call IWBTG bad though. It does exactly what it set out to do, which was to make a fucking unfairly hard game for people who enjoy that kind of thing.

Games being really unfair and using unorthodox methods are things that throw many people off and are things many consider to be "bad" I think. I dunno, I like it.
