So tell me /vir/, is VR gonna be the tech with which I can finally escape reality?

 No.1224

not until we can have full body immersion

 No.1225

I guess, but only if used with hallucinogens. Shit's still going to be tight, yo.

>>1218

Not particularly more than you can now.

 No.1230

It will never come close to lucid dreaming or entering altered states of consciousness. It'll probably the second best thing we'll have access to in our lifetimes and most importantly it'll be something tangible that can be shared.

Hollywood and mainstream media has sold the idea that it'll be something that it isn't at all and the disappointment is going to leave people devastated.

Even if it never comes close, shit will still be cash as fuck. Especially with drugs as desribed in >>1225

when 3D first appeared it was a bunch of game that were kinda nocturne and never was able to reach larger market. This was the virtual boy in VR.

then came something good. the fifth generation of video game which was a transition to 3D. THese were nintendo 64, PS1 and shit like that. That is in VR: oculus, htc vive,…

if we were to compare ourself to 3d graphics, we're in 1995. the sick transition to VR is going to happen just like it happenned for 3D.in 2003- 2005(2023-2025) we will get something quite awesome.

I predict a almost fully immersive thing near 2030

 No.1645

Having recently tried on an Oculus gear at the electronics store I'd say we're getting close. I'm already used to dropping money on video games for what's always really been a high tech optical illusion. Besides the most important/obvious application (pornography) I'm already hyped that these goggles could, for example, put me in a virtual living room where I could play games on a virtual tv.

But I have to wonder if vr goggles will naturally lead to full body vr. Humans have been crafting invention after invention to improve their conditions, whether functionally or decoratively. Will those inventions consume the human body or just grow around, within and about it? You can never truly be "in" vr because vr is only virtual, vicarious. If you were to lump all art forms together as expressions of substitution for reality wouldn't the most complete expression have to be outside vr?

In other words, will this technology one way or another become external and tangible?

not trying to ramble
