Having recently tried on an Oculus gear at the electronics store I'd say we're getting close. I'm already used to dropping money on video games for what's always really been a high tech optical illusion. Besides the most important/obvious application (pornography) I'm already hyped that these goggles could, for example, put me in a virtual living room where I could play games on a virtual tv.
But I have to wonder if vr goggles will naturally lead to full body vr. Humans have been crafting invention after invention to improve their conditions, whether functionally or decoratively. Will those inventions consume the human body or just grow around, within and about it? You can never truly be "in" vr because vr is only virtual, vicarious. If you were to lump all art forms together as expressions of substitution for reality wouldn't the most complete expression have to be outside vr?
In other words, will this technology one way or another become external and tangible?
