FIVE HUNDRED AND NINETY NINE US DOLLARS

 No.1651

well, not buying this anymore

 No.1652

You get two free 'AAA' VR games and a free xbox controller (which you will probably need for some games). It's really more around 450$ or less when you factor that in.

 No.1653

Time to hop on the HTC Vive train.

 No.1654

The vive will probably cost more because you have to buy those motion tracker things and the special controller

 No.1655

>>1652

What if I didn't want the controller?

They probably got it for free for giving M$ the opprtunity to use the OR in ther shitbox

>>1654

The tracker things are really cheap, they are a bunch of IR leds attached to a motor, and the controllers are not required.

So fuck off OR shill

>xbox controller (which you will probably need for some games)

This is almost as ridiculous as the price. There's absolutely no reason why you shouldn't be able to use any standard controller made in the last decade and have a plug and play experience.

Asides for the deal they made with Microsoft of course. This controller only works fully on Windows 10 thanks to artificial restrictions. Want to remap buttons on the controller? Nope, better hope the game or program has such configuration options or 'upgrade' to 10. Linux or Mac user? Get fucked. It wasn't until a few months ago that this controller only worked on Windows 10 even.

Gaming controllers have been adequately dealt with on the PC platform for years now, this is going backwards with the worst one currently on the market. Everything about this 'open VR platform' is much more closed than people expected making the angry disappointment from those waiting for this both undeniable and justified at this point.

Except it already sold out on all the rifts through march http://vrfocus.com/archives/27649/oculus-has-already-sold-all-of-the-rifts-it-has-made-and-will-make-until-march/

It's a resounding success.

All we know is that they sold out in 14 minutes. 'sold out' means nothing without real numbers behind it and of course they have a convenient excuse for not giving them out;

>But we sold all of the units we’ve made so far and will make until our March 28th release date really, really fast. I can’t talk about it for financial reasons and disclosure and stuff but I’m super stoked.

I've been looking for hard numbers on the site you've linked to and even the comments there are bringing up this point:

>Exactly, we don’t KNOW that “pre-orders for the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) are performing just fine” — just because they keep pushing the date farther back as pre-orders collect doesn’t mean they’re performing fine. That’s all in a vacuum since we have no numbers.

Well, since I only have a toaster-tier PC that can not run VR and I already have a PS4 I know what I'll be getting.

PS VR is the only platform where we KNOW there'll be waifu simulators. Heck, it was one of the first demos in fact.

Oculus Rift is heavily shoehorned into their particular store-front system and will probably be a drag to use outside of their ecosystem.

HTC Vive is not confirmed to be particularly restricted yet, except it will of course be directly supported by Steam, but it will likely be the most expensive option.

Best bet for PC-VR is to wait until next gen when hopefully the graphics cards and processors have caught up and dropped in price. They will probably be ahead of the development for longer than the top of the line GPUs required to run the rift optimally now, which are overpriced now and will probably only last this gen. Considering how VR iterations will be like with smartphones, if we are to believe that, then shelling out hard cash for a VR rig now is extremely unwise unless you are swimming in cash.
