Getting into these Mongolian Manuscripts. I just finished Katawa Shoujo, but i've been informed that it is bad (I liked it, but the general consensus seems to be that it's bad).

Do you guys have any suggestions for someone trying to get into VN's? Thanks.

I liked it too, but it used to be overhyped. And too American, maybe, it did feel different from other VNs for one reason or another.

Yume Miru Kusuri is the next logical choice as it's the one most similar to KS. You might also like Kira Kira if you want a high school romance, but Overdrive VNs are an acquired taste.

Type-Moon and Key VNs are classics, but as they are extremely long, pacing is an issue with their VN's. Tsukihime and Rewrite are my favorites, but people tend to like Fate/Stay Night and Clannad more.

What a Wonderful … Series is nice if you want artsy. Forest is if you want full-blown mindfuck. If you know Urobuchi, you'll recognize his style in Saya no Uta and Kikokugai- the Cyber Slayer.

Muv Luv and its sequel are arguably the most famous VNs. Muv Luv's meh, but it's worth reading through to get to the great real robot action of Alternative. If you want super robot action instead, Demonbane is fun.

Just pick one from there and have a read.

KS is only called bad by hipsters who have to hate anything that gets popular without their permission and without them retaining near-sole gatekeeper status to accessing it.

How can you tell the difference between someone who is being a hipster faggot and someone who legitimately hates something? The former will not be able to elaborate or provide detailed reasoning. It's impossible to hate or even dislike something without being able to describe what it is you don't like about that thing. Saying you hate something and not being able to explain why is like telling people you know all about the sun but not being able to point it out in a clear blue sky.

Seriously don't worry about it, don't let other people tell you what to enjoy.

This guy knows what's up. Yume Miru Kusuri is pretty good, and Fate/Stay Night is basically required reading.

Other suggestions:

Maji De Watashi Ni Koishinasai and sequel: It's the most ridiculously fun vn I've ever played. Pure joy from start to finish and surprisingly affecting in some routes.

Steins;Gate: Great game. It starts a little slow, but at about halfway it takes of into a really great sci-fi thriller and there are great character interactions all the way through.

Yeah the thing with Katawa Shoujo is that it gets compared to magnificent shit like Saya no Uta, Rance, Muv-Luv, Steins;Gate or any other translated series that has seen some bit of fame. KS is very average as far as eroge go. Not bad but not amazing. Were it not for a handful of mediocre routes it may have even been great.

I think it's also that KS a good starting point for new readers because they don't have to deal with too much weeb-shit and because of that it becomes a benchmark for a lot of players who haven't had much experience with other vns.
