Seriously, what has Voat’s core user base come up with? Being a link aggregator, most of the OC and users already come from someplace else, so it's stuff you can’t exactly take credit for. Voat has free speech, but the problem is I don't see it managing it nearly as well as some others. Free speech’s main use isn’t just so you can be crass. I suspect part of problem is the vocal base of decrepit baby boomers on there. Most people don’t mind edgy jokes, but the Voater’s idea of edgy is stuck in the 1960s, and fails to be funny or paradigm shifting. Tangentially, I’ve also noticed some of these core Voat users can barely meme, or banter. Comedy exists to push boundaries, and attempt to articulate the inarticulate. Anti-intellectualism over there is rampant, and hurts the place greatly. Shouting nigger-dick-faggot is not paradigm shifting, nor is it really a bleeding edge, constructive, or creative statement. Not only is shouting nigger-dick-faggot ad nauseam unclever, making you sound like out of touch (in a technical sense humor-wise), It also seems as if you’re misappropriating a valuable liberty. Freedom divorced from responsibility is akin to being adrift on a boat at high seas. You can row in any direction, but each direction has a slim chance of survivability. Spamming obscenities in turn hurts Voat's public perception, the very users shouting "nigger-dick-faggot"s, ability to remain conscious, as well as the persecuted ideas which have been relegated to free speech platforms. Not saying everything has to be a booru, but for added context, I would also add that there are lot of trade-offs you miss out on from the ethereal nature of an imageboard. Voaters are constantly namefagging, and the voting inherent to voat/reddit also has seldom talked about problems. Fostering healthy growth requires (sometimes unreasonable) constant effort and vigilance on the part of the user-base, that I often see misdirected or lacking.
