I guess Im quite in favour of an Australian policy but you have to be careful it doesn't go too far the other way, although considering the quite lefty attitude the country has I doubt it would.
The unemployment stats have been falling because the government have been getting people (mainly young, white, British 18-21 year olds) into the work programme or something similar. They havent actually found a job at all they've just been dumped into a 35-40 hour week with no increase in wage and no help for their future aside from possibly being kept on by the company they're "working" for which is doubtful.
It works for the government because they look good getting the unemployment stats "down"
And it works for the companies and employers because they're getting free labour without needing to worry about a contract or full time, paid work for the people under them.
If you're going to do that, rise their benefit up to minimum wage level at least. Give people on the dole something to be proud of or strive towards.
And I wouldn't really call forcing the frail and disabled into work to the point of anxiety, sickness and even death in some cases means testing
