The gameplay is pretty great, some would argue it's the best in the series. It does however have odd, tiny flaws throughout. A good example is the completely unnecessary time it takes to dispatch to the mission area that seemingly exists solely for the "cinematic value" of it. It also has flaws like heavily repeating (and repetitive) side-ops required for 100% completion. I'm talking "take out the tank battalion" numbered 1-25 or some shit, the only difference being it gets progressively harder but not in any interesting way. Also, you'll generally want to do those missions the same way every time, non-lethal, because you'll get valuable resources as a result.

The game kind of pulls a Peace Walker in the sense the main story kind of ends but it's not really the end of the story, you go into Chapter 2. Which continues the story, but does not tie off all of the threads it starts with a proper Chapter 3 because Chapter 3 is on the cutting room floor. Oh, and the majority of missions in Chapter 2 are repeats of previous missions you've done just with certain varying factors introduced that function basically as difficulty levels. For example you'll do a mission you did before, except it's on-site procurement only. Well, that modifier is cool except it's a lazy way to pad out the length of the game as well as a good way to enrage you when you realize they should have just added gameplay modifiers like that as a universal option on every mission it would be possible on for future replays.

The game as a whole is pretty lacking in cutscenes and actual story exposition. Believe it or not Peace Walker did this formula much better in terms of integrating story with its mechanics, in my opinion. Every mission you did felt like it was pushing you towards the next step in the story, whereas a lot of main missions in this game feel like side-ops which are only justified as being main missions because they're somewhat larger in scope and fit into the "just for revenge, going to do any kind of wet work mission to make money to fight our enemies."

The game's true ending comes out of nowhere as a random late game mission in Chapter 2 and its content is extremely controversial.

Story wise most of the things it does most right are in side stories, for example Quiet's story actually manages to be easily one of the best. This is not just my opinion as a waifufag but one that is generally held. Kojima really knocked it out of the park with Quiet but even the completion of her story results in regrettable gameplay ramifications… Also another returning character's sub-plot is one of the best in the game and a great example of Kojima on his A-game.

That Chapter 1 I mentioned, your mileage may vary but a lot of people think taking just it alone is more satisfying as a cohesive and sufficiently tied off story and gameplay experience than the conclusion as a whole. Then again that Chapter 2 I mentioned has some of the best moments in the game when it's actually giving you new content, and not repeating missions you've already done.

I don't know what else to say, these scattered thoughts should give you some idea.

Overall if you've followed MGS this long I have to recommend you at least play it at some point.

I won't entirely place the blame on Konami either like some fanboy, but I think there is serious validity in saying that those kind of issues with them were the major ones in play. Much more valid than just the suggestion of Kojima being a hack who is long out of his prime. Well I would say that the genius of Kojima has definitely deflated since MGS3, I had assumed that MGS4 was truly the worst thing he would ever dish out until I played PW and I was astonished to find out that he can degenerate any further.

It's difficult for me to disassociate the idea of Kojima and the notion of a genius for me, it's a combined idea that I considered truth for many years of my life so any disappointment regarding him cuts very deeply for me.

I can't deny that he is no longer the force of creativity and quality that he used to be.

I never played played mgs4 because i don't have a console but i did play PW and thought it was great, which you mentioned not liking in a previous post.

It felt like the big boss turns evil story that kojima said he was going to do with the phantom pain if i look back on it now.

MGS4 is very nostalgic for me in a sense just because of the circumstances of the summer that I played it for the first time. I really enjoyed myself and look back very fondly on it and that time. But I tried to play it again when I was doing a replay of every game in the series before MGSV came out and couldn't be bothered to do so. I like some aspects of it a lot but overall I can't go back to it. I would rank MGSV much higher than MGS4, not just for the gameplay, but for what it does do right story wise and with the writing, even if it arguably does a lot of shit wrong, or rather, fails to do at all….

Peace Walker on the other hand I already kind of commented on. I quite enjoyed that, actually. I played it for the first time recently. I love the aesthetic and presentation of it in every way. It's very cool. And the story feels focused and contained, like the Metal Gears before it. When you're doing a main mission it feels like a main mission, there is a cutscene accompanying it that ties into the main story and goal you're aiming for. This is what MGSV failed to do adequately.

In Peace Walker you're contracted to do something very specific at the outset of the game and the game never really strays from that. In MGSV, any kind of filler mission of sorts is justified as being expanded into a main mission (take out the tank battalion, rescue these dudes from the outpost, kill these major military figures all on their way to the same outpost, etc.) because as Miller says from the start, they're just doing contract after contract to rebuild Mother Base and become established enough to combat Cipher…

This lack of focus is what harms MGSV the most and why in many ways I prefer the format of Peace Walker to it. Peace Walker should by all rights be the furthest thing away from a traditional Metal Gear game, yet somehow MGSV manages to take that title away from it through a simple and regrettable lack of focus… To be fair, MGSV still feels like a Metal Gear game overall, just not in a lot of ways it should have (and absolutely could have).

When that was revealed by Del Toro on Twitter it was honestly the most painful aspect of the entire thing. I was really loving Maggie during the Governor arc when she was sort of the understated biggest "monster" by the show's standards on Rick's side. At that point in the series she was the one doing most of the human killing and nobody but me and a few other fans had seemed to notice.

I assume you've seen and heard the completed Paz subplot in MGSV, what did you think of it? I think the final scene is just absolutely beautiful and the tape is excellently written. The part where Ocelot says "You're pretty good!" gets me every fucking time. The way it sort of echoes through the ages. Definitely one of the best of the best moments in MGS4 (and of the series). Oh, and the optional ending with Ocelot on the WIG in MGS3 where you can choose the correct gun but then deliberately not pull the trigger, and Ocelot acknowledges it and asks you why, and Snake just give him this little look. I just wanted to say thanks for all the good times. I haven't been posting here too often lately. I just want to say I'm sorry for all the times I lashed out at you guys, said dumb stuff, hurt people's feelings. I had a lot of negativity in me I'm still working on getting rid of entirely at times. I value the friendship I got from this community. I believe I might be done with it though, at the very least now I'd like to focus on other stuff in my life. It was a nice year chatting with you guys and watching movies together.
