It wasn't an issue in that sense that when you knew someone had raped there wasn't a strong social stigma on that person, within an enclosed society the rapist would surely earn distrust but not actual persecution.
In times where war was relatively common, rape was the number one tool to assert your dominance over a tribe, you can look at any empire and its imperialistic method and notice that rape was a very strong tool for each one of them.

The pressure rapists have today is a western for that very limited notion, rapists were sentenced to death in Rome for example.
But if you go a little to the east and observe what happened on the Arab peninsula, the SE Asian nations or Africa, you will notice that rape was not this universally accepted ultimate sin, but as any violent practice was often interpreted as a liability and in certain circumstances shunned upon.
But even before the inception of Islam, over 1500 years ago Mohammed who is a rapist managed to become the leader of the entire Arab world with incredible popularity, even though he had conquered a lot of soil by his sword.
So really the stigma that is on rape today is nothing like the concept people had about rape for the majority of history in the majority of the world.

But all of this boils down to what a moral system even is, every moral system that has ever been invoked in human history was all about finding happiness and avoiding suffering.
My claim is that monogamy offers intrinsic happiness and spiritual well-being that polygamy cannot offer (in our western society).
If I were to love someone just for his looks and money, the chances are very high that I would end up miserable once I realize his psychological make-up is actually extremely off-putting and I wasted money, emotions and energy on a person I cannot love.
And as I said before, all of these attributes are highly fleeting, so it really is just a matter of rationality to abandon superficial ideas about love because here the stakes are the highest that you will increase your happiness and the happiness of another person.
I could now dig into the social problems that arise in a polygamous world, but that would also take a few hours to discuss I think.

And even if we somehow made probability of traits corroding or changing it would still be just as equally valid to propose that your personality is 100% guaranteed to change over your lifetime. You are a different person at 20 than you are at 40, and then at 60, and so on. When it comes down to actual moral evaluation of relationships, the only proper conclusion is that whatever works for consenting adults to give them equal well-being in a relationship is morally sound. It's the same principle which shows gay marriage to be morally sound. In order to back up your claim of "monogamy offers intrinsic happiness and spiritual well-being that polygamy cannot offer", you would need to demonstrate the impossibility of a three or more person relationship being of mutual well-being to every party involved.

No but it's extremely vital to the answering of the question, when you can decide between causing happiness and causing suffering, you will always go for what will cause happiness as a moral person.
Now we are discussing a topic that is obviously incredibly complex there are no obvious guidelines for what will lead to happiness and to suffering.

Yes but as I said, the radical transformation of personality is a quasi-fantasy, it's definitely possible but as I said probability is the key here.
There is a reason why a lot of people would argue that summoning a communist (or capitalist if you ask communists, I don't want to debate politics) regime is very very likely to cause immense suffering even though there is the possibility of things going well, and for -that- reason it is not a morally sanctioned by these people.
But the argument of probability was a very small one, I perhaps made the mistake of talking a lot about it which might have made it look like I place of thought into it.
The more pressuring argument is that if you are to bind your love to attributes that have no depth to them, meaning they are very abstract and palpable there is little that bonds you to a person.
If we were to accept that a relationship that is bound to money, fame and looks it would be entirely justified to leave your partner once he loses any of these things or to leave him or her the moment you find someone who is simply wealthier.
Superficiality dictates this behaviour, obviously people are on a spectrum where they can more or less shallow but these describe the inherent problems with being superficial for one.

No they would also be rather superficial, superficial describes shallowness IE the lack of depth and greater thought, impulsive adherence to instincts.
Valuing more abstract features means it will be difficult for you to replace this person because you have fallen in love with a very unique accumulation of traits and there is a reason why this is is good, as I just said it would be more difficult to replace this person and you can be reasonably sure your partner truly loves and thus will be faithful.
Beyond that, looks and fame can offer you only a scintilla of what profound love can offer you (money is a special case in that you will need a certain degree of it to simply survive).
The ability to just sit somewhere in the proximity of a person that you love for hours is a state of mind that cannot be reproduced by a person's sheer beauty or his elevated social standing.
This is a very romanticized example but I want you to abstract it, to know that my main argument is that fleeting attributes are -inherently- less satisfying even if they weren't fleeting, they just happen to be also very temporarily available.
And I would argue this is universal truth, that every person said that money made him or her profoundly happy simply has not ever tasted profound happiness that one finds in a healthy unification under the scope of true love.
It is pure ecstasy, money can offer me ecstatic moments but it is not an overshadowing stance on life.
Those moments are again very -fleeting-.

Yes but I would argue that polygamy cannot offer what monogamy can offer, for reasons I perhaps haven't clarified probably as this is an even more expansive chapter.
But more importantly polygamy is also not a sound principle for any healthy society.
I must say again that jealousy is perhaps the strongest emotion one can experience, and there's a reason for that that we could also discuss in a lengthy debate.

No those are two unrelated assertions, when I make the claim that monogamy offers a sensation of ecstatic love I am not saying that finding happiness in polygamy is impossible, just that the ceiling is much lower and that it is more likely to fail altogether.
Again we can analyze this to an incredible depth, there is a clear (and I'm aware I'm adhering to nature's authority) biological reason why our neurochemistry would be hard-wired to kick us into a stance of absolute bliss in a profound monogamous relationship and there are clear problems that arise with polygamy within society.
As a perhaps poor anecdotal argument; I have never even heard of a relationship that involved more than two people that was healthy and long-lasting without any negative emotions harbored by any of the participants.
