I really don't think what you're saying is true, just because it was commercial pop music doesn't mean it was abiding the same standards of quality. I would argue that nowadays it really takes less to become a pop-musician than it did before.
Madonna's music is very eclectic, there is house, there is rock, jazz, there is weird Eastern inspired new wave stuff or whatever.
Modern pop music seems very stream-lined to me.
And I wouldn't even know where to start with Björk, I wouldn't even call her a pop singer.
