If you go downtown there are tons of really old, beaten up buildings. NYC and LA are just really old cities and from time building start to fall apart or become out of service. I participate in Nanowrimo every year, where you write a 50k word story in a month, so I have a few longish stories built up. Talking with qg has motivated me to go back to one of them and edit it up to scratch.
As for the gf everything is cool. We start back at uni in a week and it's the last year for both of us. I got her maccy and took her to the park bench on the other side of the block for Valentine's day so you could say I'm a real romancer.

That's what Matthew Reilly did. He was a Sydney based law student who took a bank loan to self-publish his first novel, Contest, at the age of 22 when he was rejected by every major publisher. But it seems like a big risk and a lot of work, I'd have to be really happy with the book. Reilly's books are generic action schlock, not historical fiction.
