The biggest complaint so far seems to be the 2d plane for movement.
My current fear is what the unit cap is.
Such a game should be massive, but previous games like Etheirum have proven that devs can sell games with a 20 unit cap.

It depends. Most I've seen deployed so far is 10. As you go up in rank you get bigger point matches that allow you to deploy either larger or more line ships. So say 600pt matches you can deploy 4 Cruisers or 5 Light Cruisers and maybe an Escort.
Generally though when you are first starting you are deploying something like 2 Light Cruisers and an Escort before it gradually goes up. If you tend to go over 4 vessels commanding them all turns into a real clusterfuck fast as you have to manage each abilities and cycle through them all.
It feels honestly like playing Starfleet Command games if anyone has ever played those?
Also in regards to the Orkz, they aren't playable yet but they can be fought in the prologue campaign tutorial. They are about Dakka and Ramming.
