 No.877

After reading through the majority of the Horus Heresy novels, I've been thinking about a particular point in regards to (almost) all Space Marines, and, by extension, the Chapters they belong to.

What I want to know is: Why are Space Marines such assholes to baseline humans? Even before the Heresy begins, they're pretty dickish to everyone who isn't also a Space Marine - The worst offenders being the Dark Angels and the Iron Hands in particular.

 No.879

I can't remember dark angels being particularly bad to humans, maybe it is in the later books.

Still this SM-human relationship is strongly dependent on chapter.

For the most part marines cannot relate to humans. Neither in size, strength, activities, hobbies , schedule, speed, reactions, duties etc.

Most marines are displeased even dealing with remembrancers who will record them for the further generations and do so under orders to do it.

 No.880

space marines live only for war, they cannot relate to normal humans who want to live.

Also, the whole "XBOXHUEG immortal demigod" thing.

that too

they cannot integrate in normal human society

 No.885

They are raised as honorobur killing machines that rarely have any hobbies that don't directly involve warfare. They're basically genetically altered combat aspies who live apart from the rest of society. Some of the chapters that can trace their lineage to some of the more humane primarchs may be more sympathetic.

 No.890

There's a bit in False Gods I think where a group of space marines kill some humans by trampling them. I imagine its difficult to empathize with humans due to how ant-like they are by comparison. Not to mention they have pretty contrasting outlooks on life. Humans are all too aware of their mortality and for the most part would like to hang on to life. Space marines are the exact opposite. They are essentially immortal, and very much at ease with the idea of dying.

 No.896

As much as the Ultramarines are hated, the Ultramarines, the Salamanders, the Space Wolves, are all pretty much the sole ones that will gladly put down their lives for regular humanity. Whether be it a Guardsmen, or that normal bystander Human on a Hive world or Civilized World, the factory worker of a Forge World, the tribal of a Death World and many other Humans.

 No.897

If I remember correctly, they were trampling them because Horus was dying, and they didn't give a fuck about anything except saving their warmaster.

 No.934

>>897

That whole fucking part was awefully convenient to make up plot points. If I remember correctly hundreds of nobodies immediately started crowding the hallway getting down on their knees and lying down in the way crying. The whole fucking thing was a ridiculous display in lacking common sense and was just an excuse to make animosity between the marines and humans.

 No.956

>>877

They were literally designed to be superior to normal humans in every physical respect, and raised in environments that would likely make it pretty hard for them to understand how normal humans think, act or feel.

Space marines have importance and duty. Humans have tiny, feeble and short lives that usually don't accomplish anything.

>>934

They never needed to invent a reason for humans and marines to dislike each other, they've had a damn good one for years.

Space marines on both sides of the faith have invaded Terra at least once. Chaos did it during the Heresy, the Black Templars did it during the Age of Apostasy, and for the most part, the average layman barely has any clue why. No matter who the Marines fight for, the humans know they can and will crush them flat without thinking. An individual Marine is special, important, an investment, serving a higher purpose. An individual human is replaceable, insignificant, an afterthought. And if killing an Emperor-loving human will serve a Marine's purpose, there won't be any hesitation and the humans know that.

As has been said before, barring rare cases, humans and Marines simply can't understand well enough how the other thinks or feels.
