HH starts out okay for 3-4 books or so, and goes down the "Lets try our utmost to never ever advance anything we started" drain after that. Still, as good a place to start with as any.

Just be sure to stick to the books with players that you WANT to read about when you start out. No use boring yourself with for ex. Guard or Inquisition centered stories if what you want is Battlefleet or Marines stuff.

Gaunt's Ghosts

I would say Eisenhorn by Abnett. I've read a shit load of the books, but that series is still my favorite. Read them in order for sure. Fucking badass books.

I started getting into WH40k about a year ago. I knew nothing about it, I started with the Horus Heresy. I'm about 17 books in and I am liking it a lot.

I am hijacking this thread since there was an existing one with almost exactly my topic.

Dear /tg/, I am in need of your guidance.

I want to take my first steps into the Warhammer 40k universe by reading some novels and have no idea where to begin. There is about ~350 books on the subject and I feel lost before I have even started. Sites and columnists suggest different books to start with and there seem to be no standard reading path.

What book started it? Was it the boardgame rulebook?

Is there an official chronology?

What do I need to know before reading the books?

All help appreciated.

Answering my own post after researching a bit and arriving at the conclusion that The Horus Heresy aka. Warhammer 30K is a good place to start to get a insight in the events that took place before 40K and created much of the settings that makes up the modern 40K.

Can someone confirm this?
