the distillation method assumes you have heaps of fuel by your side that you are willing to consume for a cup of water. Also distillation requires that the tube is continuously kept cooled (i.e. you pouring water all over it continuously) unless you have days to wait.
Distillation of saltwater is slow and takes a lot of energy. You are more likely to be efficient with your limited time and resources if you use a solar still with a lot of sea water. You could create a hundred of these solar stills in a few hours with nothing but a shovel and plastic sheets. You can then forget about it for the next few days and go on with hunting or whatever (unlike with distillation where you continuously require searching for firewood as fuel).
Since all you need is a large sheet of transparent plastic, it is probably more reasonable to have in your inventory than assuming you have corks, metal bottles and tubes at hand.
