After we get a stable source of electricity, we will have our technology back.

The question is, what do we want after SHTF?

What kind of literature, animation, movies, music, etc. Do you guys want?

(This doesn't give anyone an excuse to slack off, just to keep morale and mind up.)

6fe7e7 No.383

First and foremost it has to be Lights, systems to boats, Radio, And perhaps some early communications to the rest of the world.

I honestly think we should ration/prohibit any electricity that isn't one of the above until we have more than we can spare and even then you can't just willy nilly that shit.

I've got an external hard drive full of music and anime.

Complete discographies of ~125 metal bands, mostly up to date. I don't even remember most of the chinese cartoons I put on it, mostly moeshit.

If we take over a dam like most of you guys are wanting to do, we'll have more than enough electricity for anything.

I have the do/k/ument, except the Drugs and Sex rars.

I also have the (most) of the Studio Ghibli films in Japanese/English.

Got some random films, might get more.

Rig up some deep cycle marine batteries. You can interlace them to an appropriate voltage for a radio. Then hook them up to a regulator and solar cells. (It's a good idea to garner some experience and experimenting with this prior to a habbening)

Look into the AmRRON and TAPRN, they've established their "Channel Three" project. Turn your radio (CB, FRS, GMRS, MURS) to Ch. 3 (Ham turn to 146.420 Simplex), for three minutes, every three hours. This isn't a new idea, but they're the first to have a comprehensive net with a SOP guide built around the "3-3-3 Radio Plan".

They also have an SOI Comms handbook for "sale" (donation of any amount), detailing all their Comms SOP.

This isn't something you necessarily want to communication within, but knowing when and where to listen will grant you a plethora of information you may not otherwise have. It also helps because you can make batteries or a generator last, you only have to turn it one every three hours and only for three minutes.

I know very little about the usage of electricity but I do know the basics, so I'm not sure if this will be feasible or not.

How could we go about storing and generating electricity?

I think hydropower is a pretty simple solution if we find a suitable site and any of us have experience with that sort of thing.

Well, we could get a fuckton of car batteries and hook them together, And speaking of car parts all we need to do is hook up a car's alternator to a windmill/water wheel and that's a good way to get electricity, the problem is it has to spin fast enough to actually make any electricity.

It's extremely feasible, it's done every day. It's wiring batteries in series and it's done on RV, boats, larger vehicles, battery banks, ect…

Three 12v batteries wired in series would be 36v, two 12v in series would be 24v.

If you wire batteries in parallel you'll increase amp/hours.

Deep cycle batteries are optimal because they're designed to regularly deep discharge all of their capacity, unlike an automotive battery which designed for short high power burst disharges to crank an engine.

As of right now, I'm unemployed. I've worked various jobs over the years, mostly in retail. I did a five year stint as a SAR Tech.

Both my father and grandfather were Army lifers (both served more than 25 years), both are very traditional. As a child and teen I was taught how to maintain and repair engines, electrical work, plumbing, woodworking, tree felling, wood splitting, roofing, capentry, and masonry. I was also homeschooled.

I spent most of my childhood in the woods or camping. Spent my summers being chased by my father and uncle (who'd also been in the Army) through the woods. I was taught concealment, camoflauge, small unit tactics, recon, map/compass reading, dead reckoning, firearms proficeny, stalking/tracking, hunting, and woodland survival.

My mother (and grandmothers) are extreme tradiationalist(s), but also serve as an Army Reservist. I learned to cook, sew, animal husbandry, child rearing, food preservation, gardening, canning, and basic medical knowledge using herbal redmidies.

I have hobbies in amatuer radio, nuclear physics, amatuer radiation, computers/electronics, military sciences, firearms, cartography and have an extreme interest in the era from the 50's through the 80's.

I've also read, watched, and listened to all the boring stuff. I am a very inquisitive learner, a hands-on kind of person, and always listening to the old timers.

I was also homeschooled and spent lots of time at historical sites, museums, and libraries.

Back up of important documents on hard drives. Books are to be troected. We will be able to generate power and a lot of our electronics will survive. Data rot/bitrot will speed in radiation, but there will be few things lost. Get a data rack and start saving/archiving.

A battery pack and solar/hydro/wind. We know how to make motors. Refining raw resources will be Key. Keeping industry up is the hard part.

We must have the information to teach trades and infrastructure. After 3 generations if there is nothing directly killing us, we will be returning to normal life.

I have often thought about this subject. A burned DVD, hard drive, or USB thumbdrive encased in a block of wax to keep out the elements?

Throw it down a hole and make note of the coordinates. Share the coordinates at your discretion.

I think a Ham radio with packet capability to connect to whatever thing close to the internet thats going to be

After all even if the situation stabilizes we're not gonna get any new electronics for quite a while, perhaps not in our generation

Some for of satcom would be good to, to use whatever satellites still remain

My concern is that someone could use my ham radio to trace me, is that possible?

Yes, you can be traced via radio, it's called RDF (Radio Direction Finding). However, your Average Joe isn't going to be equipment with it, nor are any of the less savvy types. It's takes training and a knowledge of radios to operate properly and it can only provide a general idea to your location. The military, Govt' Agency, Law Enforcement, SAR, and other Ham operators will have it, but only the gov't/mil will have the ability to triangulate your exact location and during SHTF what remains of their capabilities is going to be centered on national defense, not on normal people trying to get news and information.

(Pic related, it's a military RDF)

Anyone know good books that contain all the basic stuff to restart?

Like some sort of almanac on necessary subjects?

77c9b2 No.739

>>638

That's too broad of a suggestion to be contained in one book. We're going to have to rely on the knowledge of many people. Engineering and mathematics will be very important, I'd say a physics textbook in capable hands will be one of the most useful things post collapse. Some strength of materials and statics textbooks contain invaluable tables on standard structural members for construction, but experience is going to be the most useful in this situation, a lot of small scale engineering can be eyeballed by someone skilled enough, believe it or not.

In your diagram where are you getting the energy to pump the water up the hill at night?

Most ideas I've seen along this line have involved solar cells using their excess production (har har) during the day to use at night.

Anything with drm you'd need cracks for. Shit like SC2 you'd need to break into the dev's HQ and steal their server code. Of course if SHTF getting in would be easy but powering it may not be.

>smartphone or a tablet, anything that can be used to access/store modern data formats like .doc, .txt or .jpg

Android can do all these things but I have no idea about other OS' capabilities. Apple doesn't sound like a good idea for that kind of things.

Absolutely no experience with the Windows or other line of these.

>anything that can be used for data storage:

usb sticks

SD, micro-sd and similar memory cards

external HDDs

internal 3.5" HDDs for when you get to run a stable desktop. These things are bulky though so they should be limited to high capacity ones and even then, external HDDs are easily acquirable. Maybe just get a spare one that runs a clean OS so it could be used to access desktops if their main OS drive is damaged?

Also, carrying a DVD-ROM and a bunch of discs wouldn't be wise because It takes time to store data on the discs and they can't be reliably accessed. Also, discs degrade and I'm not even sure you can burn them from an android device.

>external batteries

Those fucks that provide charge until depleted. Uhhh, portable chargers and the stuff.

Would be better to bring some spare li-ion batteries instead but then again, modern touch screen PDAs are sometimes made with built-in batteries.

>one of those hand crank or some kind of dynamo chargers

Don't know much about these, just saw them mentioned a few times on the internet.

Basically something that is small enough and able to supply the external batteries with charge.

You can hook up mostly anything USB to an Android tablet via a cheap OTG cable. Just get one of those, a USB Hub and hook it up to an external battery so it supplies these things with power if the device doesn't produce enough energy to power all the connected shit. You can basically connect a laptop mouse and a small keyboard to it. I don't think simple USB sticks need power though so if you don't plan to carry other peripherals the USB Hub might not be needed.

Android doesn't support all modern formats natively though so getting some apps and backing them up on some storage might be wise, maybe there is a torrent up but I haven't looked. IIRC for example .doc or .ogg files aren't supported by most stock builds.

Another thing is protecting these things though. Touchscreen devices aren't exactly built for harsh conditions. It would be wise to look for some protective screens and rubber cases. Maybe there are some heavy duty models or protective cases on the market?

Also not all devices respond to gloves or other hand covers so bringing a stylus would be ideal.

Oh shit also earbud headphones are important. You might want to bring some over-the-ear headhpones too but something smaller. Over-the-ear headphones that supress background noise for example.

That's all I could think of. This is just my personal guess because I don't have any experience with these things and they aren't exactly tested for reliability. Maybe ask some chum from /out/ or some other innawoods kiddies from /k/?

Also, if you'd want to listen to music, you'd be better off with an old MP3 player that runs on AA batteries.

But it's not really wise to listen to music as you'd want to be aware of your surroundings and be ready for potential threats.
