Ok wrol I have relatives that have a land (roughly 250 acres) that is currently sort of a farm. My question is how do you feed animals in a situation were you cannot go to the local feed store and buy feed for them? This question has bothered me so much that I've looked into super low maintenance and highly efficient (amount of food they yield per amount of fuel and water you put in them) animals. I've found certain insects (crickets and meal worms) to be far superior to any classic farm animal in fuel and water requirements. Further questions would be what is the best way to feed ourselves in a situation were one cannot simple go out and purchase foods. because depending on the length of a situation will determine weather you need to produce food or if you can simply live off a stored amount of food.

thats what i am considering is starting a small portable colony so if i need to head up to there in the event of an emergency i could take the colony with me and let it grow to a substantial size so that it could actually feed people

I'd suggest locust since they reproduce fast, are nutritious, and decently sized.

Also if you don't like someone you can release the locusts in their area so their garden/farm gets eaten.
