Because of jews and christians, they used to make shit ton of sacifices, hence the term scapegoat… in the old testament that both religions agree on, every once a year 2 goats where chocen, 1 to be put down and spead his blood in houses for yahweh the god of israel, and another one for the the old as fuck 'demon' azazel who didnt requested blod but 1 goat to pass the sins of mindkind to it and then leave to his luck in the dessert where he suppousedly live.
sometimes those goats somehow founded their way back to the village, but people where afraid of them because they smelled 'un-earthly' and where despised as tainted or fishy, like azazel spyes or some shit alike.
