I'm going to ask this here, because, well…I dont want to clutter the other threads, and it seems more appropriate here. I'm new to 8chan, and never posted on any other chan either. I know the posting is anonymous, so if that is the case then why do some of the poster's names say 'abominable snowman', and then in some cases it says 'ghost', or other names. I don't see any way to add a name to our responses, is this name somehow specific to the board? I've looked in the faqs but I dont see anything about that there.

The board owner is adding those names, I believe. You can also enter your own name on most boards, but that's highly discouraged by practically everyone. It's also customary to sage your post when it's off topic and your post is a good example of when you should use sage. You'll notice that I'm using sage as well. It's nice to have new posters, especially on a board as slow as /x/, so I hope you'll stick around. From your post I can tell you'd be a better poster than most people on 8chan.

It's freezing cold here anyway, so it would be hard to tell if it were a spirit or not..lol It is 15 degrees, and the windchill is supposed to get down to minus 10 to minus 20 degrees.

I'm sure that if you stick around, you'll eventually catch on to how imageboards work. I found it confusing when I started using 4chan about seven years ago, but after a few days I got the hang of how things like sage, bumping threads and names worked. Sage essentially makes your post not bump the thread to the top of the board/catalogue. Everyone is new at some point. If you lurk a board for a while, you'll catch on to what that boards particular userbase is like and you'll fit in pretty well. I'm not sure what site you come from, but if whatever site/s you're used to uses a tree view for posts, you can click the tree view option near the top of the page.

I was just confirming if the whole, "it's getting cold…" meme, with or without the accompanied strange picture, is just in reference to the idea of cold spots.

Because the way I'd see it brought up in threads, even on other boards, made it seem like it was referencing some story, or strange happening, or something someone said.
