Not sure about onion, I've never heard of letsplays/streams running via it. I think the only spots where you'd get profitable attention would be on Twitch and the like.

Welcome to /you/!

/you/ is a board for discussing videos and streams. The main intent of this board is to help gain awareness of video and stream content made by 8ch users.

You can come here to seek advice, criticism, an audience or to talk about content made by others.

The rules for /you/ are simple:

1. Obey the global rule
2. Include warnings for NSFW content
(spoilers on images, redtext for videos)
3. Don't make multiple threads about the
same content/uploader

If we follow these rules, we should have a great time and see some awesome content.

What's everyone's ideal video hosting site (doesn't have to exist), and what's the closest one in reality to it?

YouTube is dominating and the most established, especially with the analytics features and visibility, but some of the drawbacks are basic stuff like comments or videos longer than 15 minutes being locked behind phone authentication. Which I can do without the analytics as long as I can upload a video longer than 15 minutes and comment on other videos, no strings attached.

Picture not related.

7d3847 No.179

I want the old YouTube to come back, before Google started changing absolutely everything and they weren't full of sponsored channels and marketing.

I want a video site that's raw, that doesn't have TV shows/stations/channels/presenters/events taking up all the views. I want one for content creation and sharing, remove the music videos unless they're independent.

Basically I want Freedom.

2154a7 No.182

>>179

I notice with old YouTube, there was a significant amount of people posting TV shows, music videos, movie clips, and the like. So from there I think the logical progress that the companies decided to take as to upload content themselves.

But now it seems YouTube has filled that niche, and alternative sites probably don't have to worry about that anymore.

(I've been visiting vid.me for a while. Something with content creation and sharing sounds rather basic, and the site fulfills that, but the search function I think they've taken a step back. And a lot of the stuff they have is some short random bullshit.)

YouTube's reach is the tricky proposition. I'd love an alternative, but if I wanted to access all the content I want, I'd have to keep returning to YouTube. That just turns any content producers off of making the switch.

I think if a serious YouTube competitor is going to arise, there'd need to be some sort of option to port videos and subscriptions from YouTube - and obviously Google can't allow that, and if you just made an automatic embedding system, Google can block embedding on your site wholesale.

I wish I had an answer, but it's like competing with Steam. You're fighting an uphill battle with a broken sword.

Hope this thread's alright, but a thread where you can show off your channel and the content you create. Share tips, critique, encouragement, or whatever.

I'll start:

https://www.youtube.com/c/BigBanter

Started out a few weeks ago and I got two videos up.

I plan on uploading a video a month.

Reviews, motion comics, 'n dubs are my focus for my channel though, so not really a lot of LPs from me.

Considering doing Harry Potter speedruns on Twitch, but I can't do certain glitches (like Forest Edge Skip in HP1) for shit.

I sporadically visit this board, but I've got an idea for the community. I think I notice when it comes to the larger YouTube channels, it's much like a network with channels sharing other channel's content in a way and having their subscribers see content from multiple channels in that network.

Not unlike friends linking their friends' videos.

So I think it would be helpful to some degree if we did something similar, along with collaborations (if we shared the video on /v/ and other boards it would also help board visibility as a /you/ thing), hosting (for Twitch streams).

Your voice isn't too bad, though the mic quality is pretty shit.

You can practice breathing and pronunciation to improve your speaking, proper gear like pop filters and mask can also help with getting rid of mouth sounds. Here's some pages on how to improve your speaking, the context is for running tabletop games but the advice is good all the same.

I stream (or at least I'll try to) every tuesday and thursday at 6:00 pm CST. I may have other streams in between those times if I see fit but those are for sure the streams I'll do during the week.

Tuesday stream is more laid back commentary. Thursday stream is more pod cast styled where research topics and present them a bit.

There's all kinds of tools you can use to record audio and video. I'm going to post the stuff I use. It's very bare bones but it's also easy to use. If you have any in depth questions about any of the tools I post here just google videos on how they work. I'm sure there's multiple videos that can explain in better detail than I can how to work these programs correctly. If said video doesn't exist I guess I'll make it myself.

Recording/Streaming Software

OBS- I recently discovered this in the past couple months. I didn't like it at first but the more I played with it the more it grew on me. It can do both local recording and live streaming. It's definitely the more complex tool I use. I regard this being better than xsplit because xsplit requires you pay for a professional version in order for you to stream certain kinds of programs (games).

MSI Afterburner I use this primarily for local recording but I haven't used it in a while since I've been experimenting with OBS as of late. It's a fairly capable tool and if you want to experiment it can do some interesting things with it. I made the video in the op this thread using this tool. I further edited it and added sound effects/music with Windows Movie Maker. I've also used it for a number of other projects.

Editing Software

Audacity Very simple and elegant piece of software. It lacks the utility for more varied operations but if all you're worried about is sound recording and sound editing this is the software for you. I used it for a commentary track and it was real neato. It took a while to snip and move things around but being able to transpose this audio file onto Windows Movie maker without issue was nice. You can edited how loud things are, cut out noise, and a number of other useful tricks with this software. It's rather complex though so be prepared to watch some youtube tutorials.

Handbrake I discovered this a while ago and I'm glad I did. It a video compression/editing software. All I usPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

Thanks for the recommendations, I was tooling around with OBS for a while thanks to this thread. I dunno if anyone's had any issues with it, but I was getting good recordings on an AMD card and swapped over to an Nvidia without much success.

If you're running Nvidia and don't mind the basic settings, Shadowplay's actually pretty cool: http://www.geforce.com/geforce-experience/shadowplay

I haven't tested the streaming capabilities, but my local recordings have all come out nicely. There's not much in the way of options but you can get 60 FPS without much hassle.

so im new here, i wanted to do some advertising of a MMO i like and doing walkthroughs on youtube sounded right until i noticed i have no mic.

utter regret later, does anyone have any tip about mics and any means to remove echoes and static noises? i can narrate them later but not live if i cant do a clear recording

e81757 No.149

>>148

As OP said, Audacity's pretty useful for sound editing - if you're just starting out it should cover everything you need, just look up guides as you need them.

If you're still looking for a microphone, I use Blue Yeti for my vidya. It's got fantastic sound quality, but the price tag might hurt.

i feel ill have to keep looking for a mic. i cant find good options around where i live and im not certain it would be worth it to get such a complete option like that

d70d0d No.171

I've recently been tooling around with the raptr game capture software, it's surprisingly high quality on it's output and works better than OBS for me. Though OBS it seems to be a matter of finding the right settings, Raptr just worked right out of the box with minimal impact on the footage quality (I noticed it was a bit choppy at higher resolutions) and didn't slow down the game. Any thoughts on it? I'm going to knock together a couple of webMs and see how they turn out.

Hi /you/, this is not a sob story, I swear

I recently graduated high school, shocking everyone, and most of my friends are off going to this or that college. They're not all gone, but I've decided to try and make some new friends. And I couldn't think of a better place to look than in the gaming community, a community I've become deeply entrenched in over my life.

It was in this pursuit that I started a YouTube channel, to play games and in turn meet other people who like to play games. But it's difficult to get a channel off the ground anymore, so I've turned to a bit of a more open forum, one I've also come to love.

So all I'm asking is that you go to my channel and/or contact me on Skype so we can just play games and have fun.

I would also love critiques on my channel, (other then my sporadic upload schedule, I’m working on that) as I'm always looking to improve.

My Skype name is NicoNicoGames, same as my YouTube page.

I will try to answer calls and IM’s as I can.

Tl;dr,:

1.Go to my channel

2. Play games with a pleading geek

3. Call me a lonely ragamuffin

Thank you for your time

Time to breath life into this slow board. Couple of questions for anons to answer:

Who is your favourite streamer and why?

What qualities do you like in a streamer?

How often do you watch streams?

To get us started:

>Who is your favourite streamer

Forever and always, Charlie Winsmore, the general, laidback attitude of his streams are great and watching him dredge something up from the darker parts of Second Life is always good fun.

>What qualities do you like in a streamer?

Either they have to be well-informed or have great comedic timing, I can't figure out why people watch people play videogames if they're not particularly good or interesting. I feel like most streamers who live off of donations and get griefed kind of deserve it for being such useless shits that they can't even provide a worthwhile service.

>How often do you watch streams?

I only really watch Charlie every few weeks and see an update on Facebook or YouTube that he's currently live. Otherwise I don't really ever bother with streams unless something crazy is going down, like the PS4 Playroom from a few years back.

>Who is your favourite streamer and why?

I usually only watch my friends stream, and browser streams by games instead of subscribing.

>What qualities do you like in a streamer?

I just have it at

>can play the game well

It's less so of what makes me stay, rather more about what would make me leave e.g several repeated attempts.

>How often do you watch streams?

Probably one on the weekend every 2 weeks. Usually only an hour per session if I'm not just leaving it on the background while I'm working on something else.

what can you stream

I can stream n64, GBA, PS1, psp with little issue.

Some of my favorite games to play for fun.

Road Rash 64- Crazy physics for an n64 game. Super violent and very satisfying

Resident evil 3- Slow going survival horror. Not the most compelling streaming material I think, but some folks may like it.

Star Ocean the first departure/second story- High end weaboo game. Lots of grinding and terrible voice acting. I also have the PS1 version of Star Ocean the second story if you'd ever want to do a side by side comparison.

Mercenary kings- Metal slug grind fest. Neat music and cartoony stuff.

things you have trouble streaming

Anything that takes bandwidth away from upload throughput. Games with really nice graphics can be pretty tough for me to stream without losing quality. My CPU does a lot of the workload to pick up the slack of my shitty internet so if the game is CPU intensive it hurts my ability to stream a higher quality.

Any requests for particular games?

That's the original GB version right? I could do it every so often. My only problem with that kinda game is it would get pretty repetitive quickly.

The only way I could make it moderately interesting is if I nuzlocke style with bare minimum grinding for added drama.

Chat, and optionally, plug yourself. Let's give this small board some activity.

What do you stream?

Since this board was only advertised (and once) on a video game board, I'm sure there'll be a lot of video game related answers.

To which site?

Why do you stream?

Any other comments.

Myself, I stream video games, sporadically, for friends, and leave VODs up, sometimes as a sample of stream quality. I used to stream Devil May Cry 4 quite often, but my skill goes in cycles of peaks, plateaus, rusting, et al; also because a chunk of my friends are also Devil May Cry 4 players, and playing averagely wouldn't be very entertaining. Could be a niche game that I liked that I want to show my friends, or a stream just to kick start some conversation in a quiet chatroom.

Originally, I streamed on Twitch, but now I moved onto Hitbox; I remember it was over audio in VODs and something about Amazon. I don't recall the details anymore (and haven't bothered logging back on).

I can't make a good comparison since my hardware's changed between the time I left Twitch and started streaming again- my internet has always been more than adequate.

Have you already looked into your broadcasting software settings? If you're concerned about quality, I think that would matter a lot more than the website.

67fca0 No.69

I stream whenever. Streaming is a hobby for me, and the time I spend streaming sometimes gets put aside.

I did recently get a new game (STALKER), which I'd actually like to play through it- I assume most people don't like to see newbs play, so if I were to stream, I'd at least familiarize myself with the game before doing so.

8d3d00 No.70

I hear ya. i'd be more inclined to watch if it were live hence me wanting to know your streaming times. Also if people know when you're playing it they can point out where to go as you're playing.
