Anyone else find it bloody obvious this guy is a pedophile? He claims to be exploring the "situation of the communities Western Civilization hasn't taken over yet" or something, but most of the places he's visited on his "expeditions" are known pedophilia hotspots, like rural India, Malaysia, Thailand and now even Cambodia. And he's even advocated incest once, links related.

Maybe areas of the world uninfluenced by the West don't mind pedophilia. It could just be coincidental.

On the Trobriand Islands, people have sex starting at the onset of puberty. With others their age, not because older partners are taboo, but because youth just tends to gravitate toward youth and older persons tend to already have partners.

Also, before Western contact, somehow they had no idea that sex caused babies. Evidently the fertility rate has been so low for some reason that the connection hasn't been obvious. They're only just starting to accept it now.

Is it obvious in the west?

Or, rather, was it already obvious at times when there was no sex education in schools? Note that the effect is about nine months away from the cause.

And the probability of any one act of intercourse causing pregnancy is very low because there are about three days of fertility each month, yeah, I understand.

But I think it was probably more obvious in cultures where sexual congress was more restrained and fertility higher. The phallic nature of symbols of fertility throughout the ancient world corroborate that, I think.

On the other hand, when everyone's having sex all the time, and doing it for years upon years before any pregnancy, the evidence is buried thoroughly.

Which raises two questions for me:
1) Why does the amount of fertility vary so much between different cultures?
2) How could people at all be able to identify a connection between sex and pregnancy without the ability to conduct molecubiological observation of a sperm cell inseminating an ovum?

The latter could have been a good guess or some kind of genetically encoded implicit clue, but the former isn't easy to answer.

Apparently he had some kind of medical emergency. Could it be STD-related?
