/sp/ can't handle figure skating, let's have a general here. Seems appropriate, at least there's a chance to have some sort of discussion here. In /sp/ figure skating threads just drown and die.

Not sure, but it might help your thread if you head over to /sp/ and link them to here so that other skating fans on /sp/ have a place for discussion.

If anyone cares to see some figure skating, it'll be streamed for pretty much three days straight from Thursday to Saturday over here (for the Junior event)
http://www.youtube.com/user/ISUJGP2011/
and over here (for the Senior B-tier event)
http://www.eislauf-union.de/

No Yulia anywhere, but Gracie Gold will be in the second one.

just trying to convert Yulia fans into general figure skating fans I guess

Gracie was alright. If it wasn't for all the mistakes, she could fight Alena and Liza no problem. Plus Liza isn't all that stable, even her coach says he doesn't expect her to perform this well in the upcoming competitions. She still has some problems with her back.

Also, Sotskova was alright in JGP. Not on the level of Medvedeva and Sahanovich, but maybe she'll get there later in the season, her new program is great.

Russia truly has no problems getting new blood, so many young and talented skaters. Even same-aged Anna Pogorilaya and Elena Radionova are almost on par with Yulia. The competition will be a lot harder in the future.

And I believe Yulia will face negative judging bias at the Olympic winter games in 2018, simply because they'll take place in South Korea (which is still butthurt about Yuna Kim's second place).

 No.677

>>672
If only we had some good young male skaters as well. It's just Kovtun and Pitkeev at the moment and they're not really all that strong. Everyone else is old and ready to retire.

 No.711

>>677
Is Yulia going to marry Kovtun one day? Seems like both are close, also both coming from EKB. Athletes usually stick together, especially Yulia who doesn't have many friends.

 No.713

>>711
I'd say zero chance of that happening, they're not that close and kovtun currently has a gf who is nothing at all like yulia. seems to go for girls who are nothing like yulia. I think she has said in one article it would be easier to date an athlete because they understand the hard work but who knows.

 No.714

>>711
Who knows. Maybe she has a crush on him since she liked most of his photos on his page vkontakte (Russian social network).

 No.715

>>711
Nah, Kovtun isn't really the type I think. And they're from competing clubs - Kovtun with CSKA, Yulia with Sambo-70. So they probably don't even know each other that well.

 No.717

So team Europe did win Japan Open without Yulia today. Radionova got 136 for her FP, that's a damn good score.

Nice how "Europe" is exlusively representend by Russian ladies ;)

>>714
It seems that she spends every free minute on the Internet now, isn't it?

I fear that she might get corrupted by it too soon, just becoming another #yoloswag slag, her "cute" personality and girly interests thus far were particularly based on the strict upbringing by her mom IMO.

 No.719

>Radionova got 136 for her FP, that's a damn good score.
Also: Yulia got a maximum 141 score for her Schindler's free program, but I kinda doubt that she will top that this season.
And Radionova beat Yulia several times before.

Radionova is a great skater but I can't help but feel this event was treated as more of an exhibition and had pretty generous scoring. I do worry about Yulia's place in the future of Russian skating though with Serafima, Medvedeva and Radionova all looking potential contenders. Pogorilaya isn't going to be a top skater, Adelina will fade before the next Olympics, Sochi seems like a fluke given her previous results. I think Yulia will just about hold off the challengers but she needs to vastly improve her jumps to do so, also her performing skills, if you watch the others I mentioned they all give great performances and Yulia has so far been much more reserved, due in part to her choice of music. For the next few years Yulia will be fine but come the Olympics she may be in trouble if her abilities start to plateau rather than improve.

 No.723

>>722
Don't go dismissing Adelina and Pogorilaya so easily. Adelina isn't a stable skater, but she's good, if she does a clean program she can be number one. And I would argue that Pogorilaya already is a "top skater". Being number 4 in the world sounds pretty top to me. She might get into top 3 one day. Also, there's Sotskova and Proklova, both can develop into awesome skaters in a few years if they're lucky. And Tuktamysheva is coming back. Hard to predict what's going to happen, but it's gonna be brutal. It won't be easy for Yulia and Radia.

 No.724

>>723

you make a number of good points, I just hope Yulia can stick around at the top for the next few years and yes it's going to be brutal!

 No.725

>>722
Yep, competition will be tough in the future.

I believe Yulia only gained so massive scores in the 2013-2014 season cause her programs and looks were truly enchanting, but technically, she isn't unchallenged. Her jumps are rather weak. And some of her unique strengths like her insane Biellmann spins aren't really honored in the ISU scoring system.

I once saw a British documentary about Russian talents where Radionova and Adelina were featured (approx. one year before Sochi), but couldn't find it again on Youtube, do you know it?

>>723
Adelina's gold medal was legitimate, she did a neat free program and had more elements in it than Yuna Kim. I don't understand that huge media butthurt (probably only cause she is a Russian which MUST imply corruption). Anyone who's slightly familiar with ISU scoring system wouldn't have bothered.

>>724
I seriously hope that she'll remain in business for the next two Olympic cycles, but the chance of a Russian winning a gold medal at Olympics in South Korea will even tougher due to that Yuna Kim incident.

>>720
If she really was a lesbian that would be awesome, cause then I won't ever have to be jealous of the luckiest guy on earth who will be her boyfriend. But I doubt it.

 No.726

>>725
I really have a good feeling about Yulia being around until she decides to retire, which I guess will be aged 23 or 27 after an olympics, she clearly has incredible drive and is totally dedicated although it's been a strange pre-season full of rumours mostly started by online trolls. Just worried about the really talented opposition from within her own country.

I think she has a solo gold in her, perhaps south korea will love her and just hold it against adelina, although that really is unfair. Plus Russia have the potential to dominate the team event providing some of the men mature.

The record number of medals in Olympic figure skating is 4 for men and 3 for women, if she maintains her progression, thanks to starting winning at such a young age she still has a couple of Olympics in her, maybe a couple more podiums in team and solo could put her right up there and she would be considered one of the greats. I'm sure she must think about that sort of thing and be driven towards achieving something really special.

Also, JGP got Russo-Japanese Finals for Ladies with Sotskova, Sahanovich and Medvedeva from Russia and Wakaba Higuchi, Nagai and Miyu Nakashio from Nippon. And the men's finals are almost entirely Asian with Boyang from China, Shoma and Sota from Japan and Hyoung Lee from Korea. The only non-Asians are Russian Petrov and Canadian Sadovsky.
