So it turns out avconv has a bug in Ubuntu 14.04 that makes firefox browsers unable to play the webm files it creates. There is a bugfix for it.

And before anyone asks, I run linux because it's obscure and supports full disk encryption, making it unlikely that my friends of family discovers how much porn is on this laptop :)

And it makes stuff like video conversion really easy once you know the right commands
