Thanks, but I already use logical increments and the trouble is that because everything on it is compatible its not compatible with my system. They have a different motherboard socket (LGA1151) to me (LGA1155) so if I wanted to get my PC to work with Logical Increments I'd have to upgrade both my CPU and my motherboard, and because of the latter also my GFX card. That's way more expensive than I want, but to me it seems like my only other option is to find a motherboard that's compatible with my existing CPU and GFX card.

This is the successor to a popular thread about self-directed computer science and programming education. As well as functioning as a kind of study group, people of all skill-levels are welcome to discuss courses, their own leaning, or programming projects in this thread. Please join us if you've ever wanted to learn to program or build for yourself a more formal education in CS.

The courses on Coursera and EDx often do runs with set start dates, end dates, and task deadlines, wherein you can pay a fee in order to receive accreditation for your accomplishment. However, if you're not interesting in virtual certificates almost all are free to take self-paced at any time.

Recommended Beginner Courses:

Ok serious question here

Is there any reason at all to own a mac these days besides iOS development?

I honestly can't think of any, even devs I know who are saddled with a macbook because their employers do both android and iOS apps tell me the latest OSX its even worse than Win10 which is a first, and some macfags have been saying the same, also about ios vs android

Also it seems apple genuinely doesn't gives a fuck anymore about keeping up with the competition since they already realized their real market are brand-obsessed posers

Again this is a serious question, if there are any macfags here then explain why you can't change it for a PC

By Brian Fagioli

Well, Apple has defeated the FBI. Sort of. Unless you've been chilling under a rock, news of the iPhone-maker's fight with the US government has been everywhere. Even though Apple is clearly on the correct side of the encryption-cracking battle, some people have sided with the FBI. I understand that people want to access the terrorist's phone as a way to thwart future attacks, but when we give up our rights and privacy, the terrorists win.

Today, the FBI is throwing in the towel. Using the excuse that it might have found a third party solution to cracking the terrorist's phone, it has requested to cancel tomorrow's court appearance. Well, a judge has officially granted the FBI's request, making Apple victorious -- for now. While the iPhone maker may have won this battle, the war rages on.

Melanie Newman, a Justice Department spokeswoman, told Bloomberg the following:

"The FBI has continued in its efforts to gain access to the phone without Apple’s assistance, even during a month-long period of litigation with the company. An outside party demonstrated to the FBI this past weekend a possible method for unlocking the phone. We must first test this method to ensure that it doesn’t destroy the data on the phone, but we remain cautiously optimistic."

Could the FBI be telling a true story? Could it really have found a way to crack the terrorist's iPhone without Apple? Sure, that is possible. With that said, why would it delay the court case before finding out if this third-party option is possible?

Think about it -- the FBI is saying the phone could hold important information that could save lives. If that is the case, and it thinks it will win the court case, why delay? If this new found solution doesn't work out, delaying the court case could mean delaying the recovery of life-saving data.

Some will say the FBI is preventing a public embarrassment, and precedent-setting loss, but we don't know for sure. Either way, Apple has won this battle and defeated the FBI for now. Post too long. Click here to view the full text.

And what does this have to do with data on a phone that's encrypted? Do you think that the NSA uses wizard magic to get data that's not synced with iCloud that'd be shared with domestic agencies?

No, more likely, it was an attempt to establish precedent. We've had many threads on the problems with the court order, and every thread you retards were in there shitting it up with "lol apple is already backdoored this is just a show."

No, the problem is that telcos keep metadata for years. It has nothing to do with Apple in particular. They had all of the information on who he contacted and such, it was an attempt to basically make signing keys useless by forcing Apple to comply.

>>Would a hardened kernel really make one safer online?

Absolutely!

Hardening = look for ways to reduce the size of the attack surface ...

Best example: disable JavaScript in our browser. This is 'hardening'.

xtreme hardening for Android:

https://copperhead.co/android/

xtreme hardening for BSD:

https://hardenedbsd.org/

xtreme hardening for Debian:

https://subgraph.com/sgos/graph/index.en.html

https://subgraph.com/sgos/hardening/index.en.html

xtreme hardening for Gentoo:

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Hardened

But more important is ENCRYPTION and FIREWALL.

SANDBOX = not hardening, more the controll of an process.

Hardening is always a passive action or what you like to attack doesn't exist.

Hardened kernels are useful in any applications where security is important.

Because most hardening mechanisms exhibit minimal slowdown, and because adding compiler flags and recompiling your kernel isn't particularly difficult, it is advisable to utilize hardening mechanisms wherever possible.

The only cons are slightly increased memory usage and reduced execution speed for some hardening mechanisms.
