What do you guys think of Lewis Hamilton's facial color scheme?
I feel like he has an unfair advantage since his skin absorbs the light when it's really bright out. Like, think of Nico Rosberg - his pale skin is super sensitive, causing him to sweat more and thus be more fatigued as the race goes on. What does /f1/ think?Formula e General

I don't know exactly what to call this, but seeing vintage video that captures the feel of a grand prix weekend, particularly if it's home video, is really a compelling expression of the appeal of Formula 1.>UK Brendan Fraser >tries to be reasonable >focus is on the plot, less on the drama >very little man

Volkswagen close to buying Red Bull F1 team
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula1/34297046
>German car giant Volkswagen is close to agreeing a deal to take over the Red Bull Formula 1 team, says BBC F1 chief analyst Eddie Jordan.
>The agreement would see VW buy the team and build its own engine, while Red Bull continues as a major sponsor.
>Jordan says a VW engine would not enter F1 until 2018 and Red Bull would use Ferrari power in the interim.
Just a theory, but I think we found another reason why Mercedes didn't want to sign with Red Bull. If Red Bull gave some "details" about the engine to Audi, it would cause a massive shit storm since it's screwing over a German company for another one.
Still, what's stopping them from giving them details of the Ferrari engine, other than the McLaren-Ferrari spying shit? I'm more than sure that Red Bull will do some underhand stuff a lot more covertly and under wraps. Oh and not take blueprints to a printer store.

Classic F1 News
With Yamaha and Brian Hart.
http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns01283.html
>SEPTEMBER 29, 1997
>Tom and Yamaha
>WITH Benetton having finally admitted that it has a deal to run Mecachrome V10 engines in 1998, Tom Walkinshaw is almost certain to put the finishing touches to another deal with Yamaha - despite a string of engine problems this season. There will, however, be big changes in the relationship with the current V10 engine being dumped and the 1998 Yamaha engine being a badged version of Brian Hart's V10 design.
>Brian has missed three of the last four Grands Prix and is believed to be working flat out to ensure that the engine will be ready to begin testing as soon as possible. He is understood to be working closely with TWR engine wizard Geoff Goddard - the two enjoying a good relationship having been colleagues at Cosworth for many years. Goddard is expected to look after the development of the engines with finance and technical assistance from Yamaha.
>The deal - if it is signed - will mean the end of the Yamaha collaboration between John Judd's Engine Developments company in Rugby and Yamaha. If everything goes to plan the deal will be announced at the Japanese GP in Suzuka.
>It is logical to suggest that Hart's deal with TWR and Yamaha will be a long-term arrangement. Brian is a sprightly 61 and seems to want to go on building F1 engines for as long as he can but it is logical to suggest that Walkinshaw may be offering him a deal in which the Hart company is eventually absorbed into the TWR automotive empire.
>Tom Walkinshaw makes no secret of the fact that he would one day like to build his own F1 engines and taking over Hart when Brian retires would be a good way to achieve that aim.
http://www.crash.net/f1/news/32444/1/yamaha-to-quit.html
>It is understood that Japanese engine manufacturer Yamaha is set to quit Formula One due to a dispute with Tom Walkinshaw's TWR Arrows outfit based in Leafield Oxfordshire, UK. The dispute is over the identification of the Brian Hart designed V10 engine, Yamaha appears to want their engineers to work on the engine and carry out the development work, while Walkinshaw merely wants to badge it a Yamaha and allow his engineers to work on the unit.
>Arrows and Yamaha were unavailable for comment as final meetings have been scheduled for this week to finally resolve the situation.

Red Bull Aston Martin
http://en.f1i.com/news/17865-aston-martin-linked-with-f1-return-with-red-bull.html
>Aston Martin has been linked with a return to F1 via a partnership with Red Bull which could facilitate a deal to use Mercedes power units.
>According to a report by Autocar, Aston Martin bosses are in talks with Red Bull about a possible deal as the four-time constructors' champion considers its future with current power unit supplier Renault. Relations between Red Bull and Renault have been strained on numerous occasions this year due to a lack of competitiveness from the power unit compared to Mercedes and Ferrari.
>With Renault considering its options, the report suggests Aston Martin branding would appear on the Red Bull in a partnership similar to the one currently in place with Infiniti - the upmarket brand of Renault's sister marque, Nissan.
>Mercedes currently holds a 5% stake in Aston Martin and the potential partnership would see Red Bull receiving the Mercedes power unit, an attractive proposition for the team as Renault pushes ahead with plans to take over Lotus.
>Aston Martin previously entered F1 for a handful of races in 1959 and 1960, but after limited success quit to focus on its sportscar projects.
Joe Saward's take is here https://joesaward.wordpress.com/2015/07/04/aston-martins-in-formula-1/
If they do this, Red Bull has to do everything in their power to recruit more people for their technical and design departments to bolster the ranks. They should also convince Newey to back to designing as technical director as well.

tl;dr Project cars sucks balls like every other game made by slightly mad studios. People who (much like 10 bux) bought it during development defended it and people who criticize the game are getting banned from backer forums. Jack Baruth of TheTruthAboutCars, who is aware of the media narrative about GG calls them out and points out how this shitty excuse for auto journalism is ruining Auto enthusiasm.
This is completely 100% related to F1, this is why people defend what F1 has become to the death. They are emotionally invested in the disaster that is the current formula. The media is complicit.

I have never actually won a single one of these threads. Everytime I see that comically anthropomorphized banana holding his peel in a suggestive manner, likening the peel to clothes and his peel-less nature to human nudity, I bust up laughing. This happens every time, no matter where I am, be it the house or the bus or in class. Sometimes I laugh just thinking about it. This is a dark memory but a few months back I had just gotten done with a fit of laughter caused by one of these hilarious threads. Suddenly my mom walks in and she's crying. I attempted to suppress the growing urge to laugh but it was getting more difficult. Face red, tears running down her aging face, mom grabs my shoulders and says "Your father's dead."
It was at that moment that I couldn't hold back anymore. I burst into a banana-induced fit of laughter, but the horrible news drew tears to my eyes. I laughed while I cried, tears streaming down my wide open grin, memories of daddy resurfacing and being melded and combined with the naked banana.
I lost two things that night.

If you're chasing the leader, but stay cool while he loses it and locks up to let you pass, no one is going to say that it was a cheap win. Rosberg kept his cool and stayed at it despite being well behind, until Hamilton made a rash decision that cost him the win.
Thus, daily reminder that it was a well earned win for Rosberg.
Daily reminder to remind Britbongs of this at every chance.

What do you guys think? Seems like a mixed bag to me. Refueling and faster cars seems pretty cool, but that doesn't mean per se they'll open up the formula anymore. Good thing to see the sport going in the right direction…(?)
iWC GP Round 7
Race was last Saturday but I run my own races Saturday morning in what is effectively the GP3 series in line for this.
Another track that doesn't get real F1 and I am unaware if any real open wheel series hit there. Maybe Formula Atlantic for that region. From exp this track is intense, the "roller coaster" section makes you wish these cars had even more wing and threading the esses leaves less room for error than Suzuka. Lots of ups and downs ahead.
Enjoy guys. Racing starts at just a little after 8:30.

A new thread, old thread reaching limit.
Will Rosberg actually be able to maintain first place? Or will he go beta and throw it away to Hamilcock? Do you think a Torro Rosso can get a podium? Will Maldonado opt for a ride in his mad-max lotus? Will he systematically murder all drivers in his way to acquire first place?

http://thejudge13.com/2015/04/20/how-modern-circuit-layout-affect-racing/
>Formula 1 cars may have been slower in past eras but they looked quicker, and the work that the drivers did behind the wheel was clearly beyond mere mortals like you and I.
>what everyone within the sport seems to ignore is that much of the fault lies with the circuits
>And modern F1 circuits are terrible!
>One of the key aspects of great F1 circuits is the ‘flow’ of the circuit. The ‘flow’ is when one corner or straight feeds into another, when each corner is partly defined by what proceeds and precedes it. There is perhaps no better example of this than the almighty Suzuka circuit, built to test racing cars to their limit.
>Every corner here feeds into the next. The esses link beautifully to the Degnar corners, whilst spoon curve puts tremendous pressure on the drivers as they seek to get a perfect exit onto the back straight. The key to Suzuka’s success is that there is no wasted space; every single corner is designed to push a racing car to its limit, including the chicane and the hairpin.
>Even when the races there don’t produce overtaking, the visual spectacle is something that any motorsport fan can appreciate. A perfect lap of Suzuka is something beautiful to watch.
>One of the biggest problems with modern F1 circuits is the sheer abundance of slow, technical corners, which ruin the flow of a circuit. Much of this is apparently to make overtaking easier however the verdict is still out on whether this has actually worked without ruining the visual impact of watching racing cars.

1000 bhp turbo F1 engines? Yes please.
http://www.formula1blog.com/f1-news/ecclestone-f1-needs-1000bhp-v8-engines/
>Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone has called for a return to V8 engine format with 1,000bhp. According to Gazzetta dello Sport via AUTOSPORT, the ringmaster of F1 says the series has to do something immediately to stave off waning viewers, sponsors and interest in the sport.
>“We need to go back to engines whose costs are more reasonable, and we need to intervene with maximum urgency,” Ecclestone said.
>“Going back to a Formula 1 with naturally aspirated engines and KERS, while setting precise constraints, would drastically reduce costs and would be convenient for those already in F1 and for those would like to enter it.”
>“We’d just need to take the old V8 engines and modify them by increasing displacement to bring power output near 1000bhp.
>Ecclestone hasn’t been the biggest fan of the new V6 turbo Hybrid engines and blames the new format for some of the lack of interest of late in F1—not to mention the out-of-control costs and bankruptcy of the smaller teams such as Caterham, and Marussia.
>Ecclestone had been quoted as saying that he wanted a return to V8 power. Speaking on Sunday, however, his stance has softened.
>"Two things: those who supply the engines have to supply the same engine to the teams – if it’s the current one upgraded to 1,000bhp, then good," the 84-year-old said. “But at a price they can afford to pay.
>Maybe make the cars more difficult to drive.”
>On Saturday, Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff said that discussions are ongoing about the changes, which he said would create a “spectacular formula”.
>“I think all engine manufacturers are pretty clear that the current engine architecture with the hybrid component needs to stay in place,” he said. “This is the direction we’ve had and this at least at the moment is the current status between Ferrari, Renault and Mercedes.”
>“In 2017, those engines, between all manufacturers are going to have north of 900 horsepower. And then it’s a question of how do you want to market that? Does it make a big difference between having 950 horsepower and 1,000?” he said.
>“I think there are pretty easy tools to increase horsepower and this is increasing fuel flow. If you want to increase the fuel flow by 10 kilogrammes an hour or 20 kilogrammes or whatever it is then you’re going to have more than 1,000 horsepower."
>Mercedes has opposed changes in the past, but Wolff said the German manufacturer is now more open to compromise.
>“There’s a governance in place and for 2017 it needs a simple majority in the F1 Commission to change the rules and this is the reality. So if you’re being a hardliner and blocking everything you’re going to be run over. So at least let’s stay at the table and discuss it in a sensible way,” he added.
http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/formula-1/bernie-ecclestone-holds-secret-meetings-5547979
>But the proposals Ecclestone wants agreed soon so that it can be introduced for 2017 have been bogged down in the usual arguing and dithering by teams. And that has infuriated the sport’s former dictator.
>“It's no good talking to these people they will have to be told,” he said.
>But given the sport’s new democratic management he was asked who would do the telling: “Lets see, lets see,” he replied.

http://uk.reuters.com/article/2015/04/02/motor-racing-grid-idUKL3N0WZ4J620150402F1 podcasts!
Hello fellow Backmarkers,
Been listening to F1 podcasts for a few years now and in case anybody's interested, here are my favorite ones. Also post the F1 podcasts you listen to.
- Flat Out Fever (http://flatoutfever.com/): by far the best new F1 podcast out there and easily top 3 of the weekly's. 3 Canadians just shooting the breeze, hilarious but genuinely interesting and informative + they've had a few good guests. Long format might not be everyone's cup of tea but I like it.
- Formula1blog.com podcast (http://www.formula1blog.com/category/formula-1-blog-podcast/): another good weekly. Good mix of news and lightheartedness. They've been doing the show for a number of years so they're probably the most established F1 podcast in America.
- BBC's The Chequered Flag podcast (http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/cff1): Awesome short podcast by the BBC featuring news and interviews. Sort of like a short race after-show but in audio.
- Motorsports Magazine podcasts (http://www.motorsportmagazine.com/multimedia/audio-podcasts/): A good selection of one-off interviews with special guests and analysis segments.
- Sidepodcast has a very good one with journalist Joe Saward but it's not very consistent and Joe sometimes pisses me off cuz he's a bit of a hypocrite but all in all a good one.
There's so many more but these are the ones I keep coming back to. What do you guys listen to?

I mean to follow F1 for the first time this year (I saw the British grand prix last year but that's it), but when I looked the dates up on the official website it says the first grand prix is halfway through March. Would someone mind explaining to a newfag what exactly I'm missing out on if I don't watch the pre-season tests and whether or not I should bother watching?

What are your opinions of Nelson Piquet?F1 and Social Media
"Formula 1 has taken a major step forward in trying to get more engaged with fans through the creation of a Promotional Working Group. The think-tank held its first meeting ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, as representatives of teams got together to evaluate ways of making F1 more popular. […] Ideas that have already been discussed are opening up the paddock on Thursdays, a better experience for fans during pit lane walkabouts and more interaction with drivers on race weekends. There also is an idea for a more cohesive social media push for F1 overall to ensure the sport is reaching and engaging the right audience."
Race of the Week - 1979 French Grand Prix
Unfortunately, I could not find an unabridged race video, as is often the case with the pre-1990 races. This highlights reel has most of the fun anyway. This race is mostly notable for the thrilling fight between Rene Arnoux, driving for Renault in their turbocharged car, and Gilles Villeneuve, driving as the #2 driver for Ferrari.
