I'm sure you're not alone when it comes to using ERPing as a substitute for intimate companionship. Not to try and equate our lives, but I often found myself getting into ERPs for similar reasons back when I was struggling with crippling depression. It's also probably why I ended up befriending a lot of my ERP partners from that period of my life, since I wanted to feel like a genuine human connection existed outside the sexual thrill.

I think it's debatable whether that's healthy or not. For me, I'd say it started to get out of hand when I was devoting hours of my day playing fantasy characters in fantasy relationships with other people's fantasy characters, only to still feel lonely as shit when the sessions wrapped up. What's more, it got in the way of college and offline relationships, since ERPing ate up so much of my time.

This strikes me as a different scenario, somewhat. Depression is something that can be overcome with treatment. It's not permanent, unlike the injuries that this person has. That's also not to say that you're doomed to misery and loneliness if you ever become physically handicapped. It just strikes me as a significantly different problem, is all.

Anywho, just want to make sure OP understands that ERPing isn't the only taste of intimacy he/she is capable of having. It's just the easiest.

Why is that? I know that traps are "fetishized", like you mentioned, but that doesn't mean they can't have personalities and motivations beyond "I fucking love looking like the opposite gender." You could also have a trap that's a mad scientist, a noble prince, a cowboy, a student, or all these things at the same fucking time.

I prefer original characters. They give the story a sense of novelty and creative freedom that I really enjoy.

I don't think I've ever really self-inserted. Even with minimal characters I always take some kind of role, distance myself from their actions and come up with their personality and traits, sometimes on the fly. Describing a character almost like me into a fictional story feels kind of weird, even if having some resemblance to a character does feel nice.

I'm okay with my partner playing a character that could just as well be a self-insert, as long as they aren't terrible and put storytelling first.

Canon characters that differ from the tone of the source material don't sit well with me at all and I don't think I've ever seen a portrayal from my favored canons that I wanted to play with. I've considered dropping my standards, even if just temporarily, so that I'd get to experience canon play at least once.

I don't really care. There's a time, place and way for all of it, so in the end it doesn't matter to me. I will say that for building a story beyond the erotic portions of the role play I prefer OCs. They lend better to writing your own tale I find. But for erp in a general sense, I like all three means.

I always played as someone else's character, never really as a self insert, though I have a feeling I would enjoy self-inserting quite a whole lot.

Overall, I've had a much better experience playing with OCs. In a certain way, it puts up an imperative for one to be unique and to somewhat invent themselves from head to toe.

Canons for the most part tend to be lost on me. I don't know the modern Anime/movies/cartoons enough to know even a fraction of what the profile says, and a lot of them go very, very deep into the universe's lore, making any attempt at relating to those characters a chore more than anything else… unless you play a canon character from the same universe.

Some years ago I would've said I was playing as myself, but I realized recently that this whole thing was a charade and I had been in denial about it. ERP "me" is much bubblier and cheerier than my actual honest persona. And so in a weird twist, my alt is a complete opposite: much more brash, foul-mouthed and generally angry than the actual me, yet both are "me" in that it's the same opinions, reactions, etc. Just… delivered in a different way.

Some fantasy settings use "dragons" as a term for a type of coinage, since dragons are associated with great wealth. In A Song of Ice and Fire, coppers are pennies, halfpennies or Stars, silver coins are Stags or Moons and gold coins are Dragons.

I'm pretty insecure in my writing skills and changed my preferred playstyle from chat to notes because I constantly rephrase my sentences and feel I take way to long to post.

I've also gotten heavily inspired by a BBS profile to the point of writing up a detailed setting for my canon loli.

So, necrobumping to get opinions for a reboot. Let me go over the initial idea, and then take a look across the thread. If there's interest I may try re-launching with alterations to the setting and such.

The core Idea as before is to have a thread like the orgy thread, but with a few key differences.

1. More firmly decided setting

As is, the orgy thread often has threads that don't take place in the "orgy room" and that's fine with me, I like the idea of "post an idea and see who picks up." But part of what I'm going for is a consistent setting, and a few core themes.

2. Also a hook-up for off-board play

The idea as I have it is for sessions to start in the thread, but continue elsewhere so they can be longer running. Setting wise, the thread takes place in a meeting ground, and if you want to take more private or focused play after finding a partner, go ahead and take it to e-mail or IM, and maybe drop the logs repesented by recordings IC maybe.

Not to say a one-off romp in the [Social Hall] is off limits, especially to keep the thread alive, but some of us find image boards to be a less than ideal medium for long term play.

3. BDSM themed

It kind of underpins the whole idea. You have a setting with a class system dictated by aggression and hedonism, with players choosing a role within a class system and joining up to explore their characters and scenarios.

The community is growing. Corollary to that, it's also getting casualized.

It used to be that roughly ten years ago, you were likely in a very immobile, tightly-knit group, and had few regular partners to play with.

Now, you're one among thousands. It's simultaneously easier and tougher to get it on: if you go on the prowl, you can easily find somebody to start something with - but the chances are fairly high that this person won't be very good at RPing and remain blissfully unaware of it.

As well, it's more accessible. Dedicated websites like F-List are INFINITELY easier to use than the olden days of MUCKs and IRCs. Now, instead of having hurdles every six feet, or having to remember a bunch of commands, you can just create an account and you're in business, no more setup necessary.

I think I've found it about the same in all the years I've been doing it. iirc my first ever ERP experience was in Diablo 2 as an Amazon character. It sucked, but it was my start.

My quality as a writer has vastly improved since then, and I think any difficulty I have in finding ERP is because of having higher standards now. If you want plain and simple borderline cybering, it's extremely easy to find it in countless chatrooms and MMO's.

Actually finding people who want to write erotic stories with the emphasis on story is another beast. I don't think it's harder to find exactly, it's just that so many people desire that easier road to get off.

With most things nowadays, I feel that the group is increasing in numbers but decreasing in content. Although, maybe it is just my experience, but content wise everything is fine at the moment.

It probably has to do with normies turning to erp more and more. Seeing accounts with nothing but irl model images, one liners, and total reliance in images rather than words, but hey, it is one more individual into our little cringe club.

I'm honestly of two minds on this, as others have mentioned it seems to be growing but not growing healthily. It's growing in the same way as people who have gigantism tend to grow; sure there are a lot of people participating and all that but at the cost of later life heart issues and higher risk to other such health issues. Basically, lots of people but most of them are utter shit.

Maybe it's just me, maybe I've developed higher standards since I've started but I remember back just a few years ago if someone approached me there was a good chance they'd be something I was into, or at least would give a shot. Decent profile, no overly spaghetti come-on, had ideas for what they wanted to do when approaching you, etc. hell, even bitch breakers were tolerable at times. Sure there were shit people still but that's to be expected of any community and they were easy to ignore… Now I can't even log onto my pinks without getting BBC cucklords who don't seem capable of reading profiles hitting me up for stuff that goes entirely against what my character is, towel/cdplayer generic anime boys, doormat subs, and people trying to force their weird shit on me (worst I got back then were the extreme foot fetish people, now it's shit like "sit on my face and fart until I suffocate"). So while there are certainly more people, it seems like there are fewer out there that I'd actually want to do anything with; course this is all personal observation and opinion.

Also for the record, I didn't even know about ERPing in MMOs until a year or so ago and got my start of forums, so simply judging the health of ERP based on MMO activity while not looking at other venues might not be the best metric.

I hate feet, but tons of people with nice profile seem to love feet. It's a combination of the smell and personal experience with foot related problems that kills it for me. Oh, and segwaying off that, any musk beyond just a light sweat makes me physically gag. I'd like to be more okay with feet, but I'm fine with never enjoying musk.
