80s arcade games are like kilobytes in size

90s arcade games range from 4 to 60MB (not counting games that used a hard drive)

00s arcade games range from 40 to 200MB

What the heck are you trying to play?

Everything past 2005 is 5GB+, for example Paradeiso Perdidas and Battle Gear.

Battle Gear 4 doesnt even look that good, why is it 5GB? Is it cause modern arcade games arent compressed at all for the sake of speed?

Actually it's because hard drives are cheap, You can stuff in all the data you want as well as the changing times. Just look at how big PC games are these days compared to back then, it applies to arcade games too.

Arcade games traditionally tend to be smaller because the games of back then used to use surface mounted ROMs which were prohibitively expensive and offered small amounts of space but had the benefit of instantaneous loading and top notch reliability which is desirable in an arcade environment. Now that they're based on PCs with standard hard drives they have the benefit of being able to stuff it with as much data as they want, at the cost of slower loading speeds and higher failure rates.

If I had to hazard a guess I'd say uncompressed audio is the culprit as it usually is.

downloading 500mb+ even on sites like mega is a chore, without a download manager like steam/gog galaxy
