The ring would most likely remain in the mountain along with the other treasures. Dragons never cared about the Nauglamír nor the Arkenstone. It is possible that Sauron could eventually retrieve it from Smaug since they are technically allies, being former servants of Morgoth.

The Ring would still long to return to Sauron. If Smaug allowed Sauron to retrieve it, that's another story. Likely yes. It's not just the movies that imply Sauron would have used Smaug as a weapon against his enemies. He also had an understand with Durin's Bane for example.

Although it's worth to note that he couldn't order Durin's Bane. He might be able to order Smaug.

It seems like the other great evils recognize Sauron as top dog.

Saruman, even though he always wanted to betray Sauron, always did what he wanted.

I suspect that Smaug would have less willpower than a wizard.

Yes. In the book it isn't stated that the balrog doesn't necessarily obey Sauron, he merely allows his plans/minions to run about.

The orcs/goblins follow Sauron.

A personal theory I have about the "pecking order" on the remnants of Morgoth's forces, is that balrogs are the most loyal to Morgoth. They saved him from Ungoliant, and every task they have been given they have accomplished it. Meanwhile Sauron got his ass kicked by a half-maia, lost his fortress and then willingly surrendered when Morgoth fell. It's no wonder they have little respect for him and would not follow his orders.

But to be fair, she also bested Morgoth himself in a contest of wills, so Sauron had an excuse at least.
