What did Rebecca sugar mean by this?

Toxic masculinity

Androgynous is still not masculine bud.

"My goal with the show was to really tear down and play with the semiotics of gender in cartoons for children because I think that’s a really absurd idea that there would be something radically different about a show for little girls versus a show for little boys."

"As much as I want to talk about gender politics… at the end of the day I really want to do something that’s dedicated to my brother."

-Rebecca Sugar, 2015

"For me, Ruby in a dress is how I feel when I’m in a dress. I think the show has been a chance for me to become a little more comfortable with exploring my own relationship to gender, and, of all the characters, Ruby is my most direct vessel of a character. There are drawings from 2014 of Ruby in that [wedding] dress. That was a long, long dream, and I really couldn’t imagine it any other way. Ruby and Sapphire have always been meant to represent me and my partner and so that always felt natural to me."

-Rebecca Sugar, 2018

This entire show is, and has always been, wish-fulfillment and propaganda from one bisexual, nonbinary Jew. It wasn't on-the-fly pandering to tumblr or anyone else, it was intended all along by its creator to be a wedge by which to normalize LGBT representation - and increasingly direct sexual content - in children's television. She pitched it to CN as a fantasy show about a fictionalized version of her brother then steadily pivoted to gender politics. She now admits that early scenes like Pearl's dance sequence were intended to push boundaries to make later planned LGBT content more accepted. And it worked. The window of acceptable content to show to children in animated shows has shifted. Sugar's campaign has been successful and don't be surprised when these 'boundaries' get pushed again in future.

"It has been extremely difficult to do [representation] within this show… when we started doing this in 2011 it was impossible and it has become possible over the last many years of working really hard to do this."

"Ultimately, I said, “If this is going to cost me my show that’s fine because this is a huge injustice and I need to be able to represent myself and my team through this show and anything less would be unfair to my audience.” This was around 2016 and that’s when I began to speak openly about what we were doing."

"We started talking about the wedding episode, I think, in early 2016… it was made clear to me that this was not something that should be in G-rated content and that there was a limit on how much we could show these characters, how close these characters could be with each other. And this has changed. We have been able to break this down…"

"At various levels we have had allies fighting for this to be made… We’ve had allies at all these different stages, people for whom this is very personal and they understand the personal toll that can be taken. I think there are people at Turner [the company that owns Cartoon Network] who are LGBT who would see these notes come through and just realize how shocking they are and I think that it made all the difference."

Who fused with who?

A fat hawaiin midget fused with a non-binary lesbian space rock.

Wasn't a fat afro jew? and which lesbian space rock? the jew pale one?

Steven and Pearl.

I just saw a clip of the new fusions and I hope this show ends already. What a bunch of cancer.

By why does Rebecca sugar want everyone to be sympathetic to space lesbian Hitler?

So was this rape too?

Besides the lesbains. Even Toby fox parodies the gays.

But Steven underage

Mettaton is a ghost possessing a robot, though. Plus the robot in question is inspired by androgynous showmen like David Bowie.

Didn't stop amethyst.

Yeah, but Amethyst, Garnet, and Pearl are a result of Sugar's subconscious creating various facets of irresponsible single mother figures, while also unintentionally creating a positive reinforcement on paternal figures.

So… are we done with this? did this trainwreck finally end.

Mettaton is both literally and metaphorically transgender. The robot body is supposed to represent transition, and the ghost is described as female while mettaton is male.

Steven Universe is proof that a loving god does not exist.

Clearly it's a metaphor for the feminization of European men in the current year.

No no no no, no they just needed a reason to fuse.

There's still a movie coming, and there's rumblings of a sixth season, so no, we're still far from done. But if you mean the main conflict then yeah, all done, you can jump off now and save yourself the pain.

>The ghost is described as female

Do you have a single fact to back that up?

>you can jump off now and save yourself the pain

Just knowing this exists already gives me pain.

ur mom

The good thing about this series is that for whatever popularity it has now, it will become dated extremely quickly. If the 90's had copious amounts of shadows and edginess, and X-TREME Skaterz, then the 2010's will be regarded as the "muh diversity" era of comics and cartoons, where there was an absurd overabundance of gay, racial, or other categorical characters that were poorly written.

Moreover, it lacks the timelessness, the ethereal qualities we instinctively recognize in other shows that will let them stand the test of time. Years from now, people will remember Avatar: The Last Airbender with the same fondness they regard Batman: The Animated Series currently, because those stories are memorable. Steven Universe though? It's too targeted, too specific, too narrow in its focus to stay relevant throughout the years. It might stand out as being representative of the cliches of the era, and people will remember it for that, but it won't be remembered for being Good, even by its current fans.

ur 2 dads

At least the 90s was the age of ponytails, huge muscles and huge shoulders. I miss the 90s.

Wait. I just realiced something that is triggering me right now.

>White talks about Yellow, Blue and Pink making white together.

>Sugar is using colour theory for the gems and the light the project.

The other problem is that Steven Universe is a show with an absolutely horrendous good-to-shit ratio when it comes to episodes. 6 fucking years and all they have to show for it are several dozen townie episodes, a few multi-parter episodes that have something resembling action and story, and then lots of dumb bullshit where Steven just cries and everything turns out alright. Unfortunately, the nostalgia goggles on this one will be thick and permanently affixed to the faces of any critics in the future who bring this shit up. They won't be able to speak to the quality of the art direction, storytelling, character development, or anything like that, but they'll be fellating Sugar for decades because of the perceived symbolic value of having such a faggot-filled show.

File: 09a9279ff7cae77⋯.png (91.51 KB, 379x226, 379:226, white diamond.png)

So… how did she go from being an evil, murderous sociopath to a somewhat understanding sister just by blushing?

Through the power of bad writing.

Did she abuse her brother when he was a kid?

Steven was so kawaii she jizzed in her pants and when she realized she was a faggot too she was forced to surrender to the gay agenda.

Some really contrived shit about her having vulnerabilities, therefore being not flawless, even though it was her getting embarrassed at being wrong and getting sassed once. It's absolutely impossible that a millennia old dictator has been embarrassed once in her life, no sir.

I realize this show is supposed to be fluffy and ~kawaii UwU.~ I know it's supposed to be about the joys of having fun and being yourself and not striving to be perfect and all that crap, but the storyboarders really dropped the ball by wanting to have forty cakes and eat them too. You can't set up these conflicts with earth-shattering stakes and spend most of the time on side characters with conflicts that mean so little they have no impact whatsoever. You can't introduce characters that actually matter to the story just to set them aside, turn them into parodies of themselves, or shut them into a locker halfway through development only to give them lip-service at the very end. You can't set up the bad guys as ultra-utilitarian dictators for one or two episodes, ignore them to have cutesy tea parties for twelve, and have them get redeemed by "showing their ~sensitive sides~" in another two or four. The show wants to be an anti-shonen so badly that the pieces don't mesh, if they're even used at all.

You're right. Steven Universe tried to be so GROUNDBREAKING and SUBVERSIVE that it'll end up as a relic of its time, focusing so much on "themes" that they forgot how to communicate them properly.

>You can't turn [characters] into parodies of themselves

This. This is why I quit watching after Season 2. The bullshit they pulled with Peridot was way too disappointing, and this isn't even considering the glacial pacing SU has.

It wouldn't surprise me at this point.

Well white was a failure.

Maybe we'll get artificial diamond next? A human made gem from the fucked up part of the planet as revenge?

What am I even talking about, the writers are actively sabotaging story telling at this point and wouldn't be able to write a good episode with a gun held to their pronouns.

they have more seasons for this? should have ended with that episode…

Since Sugar is an unrepentant idea thief, she'll probably just dip into classic anime cliches and have an even more powerful threat show up. Or they'll do a timeskip and they'll introduce a new cast of human-gem hybrids. Or they'll just do a few hundred more townie episodes.

I didn't like the show, but I liked the message at the end, essentially

>You don't have to like me, but if you try to get to know me we might come to an understanding

No way Sugar intended to, but that's /pol/'s multiculturalism argument of separate but valuable, and not the liberal "all accepting" melting pot outlook

It hurts because good animation is being wasted of such shit designs and show. It's also funny because it seems that most people have forgot that the show tends to be animated like ass, like a few seconds made by an actual good animator outside the team change that.

Worse yet, that looks exactly like this one too.

I'd say it's just a (((coincidence))) but SU has a huge track record of "referencing" things.

Like the show being for "special" people, the references are made obvious enough so that special people understand it.

Any straight person in this show has to be either fat with a pig nose or black though.

A metaphorical gay experience with himself.

God I hate that show so much. The target audience must be self-doubting whimps who get home and cry while watching, after someone beat them up at school over their furry trading card collection or something.

That would be a better title for this show. Steven Underage.

So is Pink really dead or did she just hide herself and decide to refuse with Steven?

>Rips off the Flameblade

>Not the superior Great Flameblade

That's even worse.

Yeah, she's dead for realsies according to the writers.

File: 9d1db6666a03688⋯.jpg (61.4 KB, 546x720, 91:120, Frustration.jpg)

And the series ends on them just 'talking it out' and convincing the bad guy that their just too mean. I didn't expect a fucking fist fight with the Mighty Whitey and her Bleached army, but it takes one last rabbit out of their ass to make Steven invincible and then they instantly dismantle the villains entire world view with one sentence and then they decide fuck it and they give up the end. I shouldn't have expected anything different in this fucking show but all I can hope is that it's dead for good now because I cannot for the life of me find any further way to drag this on for more seasons besides just doing Town shit,

There's still one more season left and a movie but I have no idea what Sugar is going to do because all loose ends have been tied up.

>seried ends on the main antagonist being talked out of being evil without much intelligence being put into the scene.

>or it introduces a new quick threat in the last season and ends it in a movie.

I don't know which is a bigger sin writing wise but I hate SU even more than I ever have before.

>she's gone

had to add a little violence to that

>one new season and a movie

fucking what?

It's going to be pure filler, no doubt, I can already see it will be garbage

>there will never be a better writer at the helm wherein the diamonds come together like a psudo sentai force

>they could all easily be written as clunky aliens who don't understand how the earth works

>Blue is very kind and gentle, but very fragile and emotional, trying to get the hang of earth relationships and being shown as a very pure and innocent girl who is very adamant about wholesome, christian family values that lead to a lot of guys ditching her after the end of a season or maybe even a couple episodes because she's to pure to even want a kiss on a first date

>she could even show some interest in earthly cultures and be shown preparing a new meal for steven to enjoy every day, since anyone else eating wouldn't really make sense

>"If I want to be a good housewife someday I'll have to be ready to prepare tons of nutritious meals"

>White is very pompous, spending her free time in seclusion and studying the finer qualities of earth life, and when she is exposed to the team's antics she's very aloof about it, showing some slight motherly tendencies here and there, nothing explicit though

>several episodes can be centered around her showing superiority over understanding earth customs, only to be shot down by the modern steven who knows that she's reading without an understanding of the time period

>Yellow could be the crazy one whose motive is fighting and being the winner, solving problems with fists and having a part time job teaching some weird gem style of fighting, it could even expound on how brittle and sensitive their core forms are, the double edged sword being that their attacks are all the more rough because of how they channel their attacks to use the hardness of their stone

>episodes can be centered around her using her job money to purchase absurd weapons and teaching new techniques to steven, such as how to properly fight with an indian whip blade or a new wrestling hold she learned about

>Pink can be steven, the billy of the cast; he's the dopey fat kid who everyone on set makes fun of, and because he's the only human he'd be the most relatable with his problems, thus he'd be the core for most of the show's plotlines, most of the others in the cast can be played off him really easy since it's not hard to write three fish out of water scenarios where each of them bounce off of the one not-fish

>Blue can be given dating advice so as to teach her how to find a guy who'd really be in for the long term

>Yellow can have sincere moments of frailty in front of him

>White can serve a double purpose as both mentor and student, where steven learns very sagely advice and white accepts advice on how more decently to act on earth

>they have to stop the green diamond and her band of misfit gems that are all imperfect gemstone cuts that try to replicate the power and hardness of pure diamonds

>when they're in human mode they can assume human names and keep exterior components reflective of their forms

>White can look like Vergil very easily

>Blue can have a big cute sweater and jeans on most times

>Yellow can always be wearing a different set of earthling battle armor or something military based otherwise, maybe always in a battle wife-beater and clearly wearing a sportsbra

>Steven can actually have more than one outfit too since he's the fucking protagonist and a kid's not going to wear the same shirt every day; the first couple episodes can even remark how blue and white wear the same clothes daily and yellow at least wears the same thing beyond whatever cool armor she found out about or dug up

>steven's friends can tell him that he's been wearing the same shirt for over a week and that it is even worn from wear

>maybe even making a comment about how he smells, bringing up the fact that his sisters would obviously not have any sense of smell since they are basically sapient gemstones

>an episode is made out of getting him new clothes and the moral is that you should properly wash yourself since being smelly stinks

>the episode could even have a garbage monster gem or something that is a physical manifestation of the internal conflict that steven is going through that the other three fight, also in american power rangers fashion

>fusion could a very simple process that involves diverting the light that the gem is refracting into a body into one single form that allows them to expend the same amount of energy to have stronger blows, also allowing them to refract into a much bigger form

>with two it would just look like they're overlayed into each other, and slightly bigger, but with all 4 they can basically turn into a megazord capable of taking on some bigger monstrosities

>episodes can revolve around the process of figuring out how to refract into each other properly and for extended durations, since if their bodies go out of sync they'll separate and be punching with their original power, and being in sync for a long time can be mentally draining since they will be putting a lot of thought into what the next move should be and what their partner will chose to do as well

>easily opened up to make way for the obvious "the team is all on a different wavelength" episode where they are so out of sync they can't even refract between two of them and they eat shit for it, but then they all come together at the end and learn the power of friendship and working together will generally solve any physical disputes because their friendship is actively shown to multiply their power excessively

>you could make an episode about the villain and what she does, going around and producing gems in a factory similar to how we produce fake diamonds in a factory

>the villain could be skeletor esque with just generally being a dickhead to her subservient commanders, all of which can be different alien races that long for the destruction of earth for the sake of it's rich source of nuclear powered technology or some bullshit, maybe even for water, since earth is abundantly full of the stuff and that would easily get rid of the human populous so they could move in to take their things

>this show will never exist and it's all because feminists are too close minded about the "narrative" they want to portray about gender psychology when they could easily ditch that and have a radical show about 4 dudes who happen to be primarily female kicking ass in a context that could easily be explained

It's not clear from the show but steven is both his gem and his body so he's a fusion with himself.

>First masculine

Holy shit I did not realized that he's technically the first male gem we saw on this show.

I remember that leak where White Diamond looked like a guy.

>This. SU will be praised forever. "Get woke go broke" will forever be just a meme.

Faggots praising faggoty shit doesn't mean said shit is successful. Steven Universe has been skirting by on the "steven bomb" release schedule for more of it's run than not, and they only even did that to artificially fudge the ratings a bit, by making sure it aired against nothing else. Even if it got canceled halfway through it's run, faggots would still be fellating Sugar's micropenis for decades for making such a faggoty cartoon in the first place. They don't care if it's good, just that it's some kind of vague notion or symbol of their cancerous ideology.

That's what happens when you get people who want to "deconstruct gender roles" which apparently just means making all the characters sexless and feminine or tomboys who are also still feminine.

When will these faggots learn japan has been doing this kinda shit for far longer with better efficiency? I don't even like eva and I have to give it credit for displaying at least one kind of male protagonist that wasn't enthused to do the robot crusades for his daddy because he was just a scared kid; the same thing goes for the original gundamu with amuro; he just kinda fell into that really powerful weapon system, amuro himself was basically a little shithead.

Furthermore, ghost in the shell does the same thing, proving that you can have a female lead who has a high sex appeal while also having an actual character; the fact that her model was a fucking sexbot is not something to glaze over either. The lists go on, but the point is there are better ways to give females and males different roles, even in america we had she-ra which is now getting a shitty reboot, again because these people don't understand how to write what they want to write as a counterpart to he-man, who had her own shit to do just as well as adam

It's like a child being given exactly what they ask for, and every time it's exactly what they asked for,but their tiny brain doesn't know how to formulate a decent thought of how to ask for what they actually want, so they just get frustrated and keep asking for the same thing over and over to see if it will change.

>This entire show is, and has always been, wish-fulfillment and propaganda from one bisexual, nonbinary Jew

Gee, really?

>There's side content with the ghost's diaries explaining being put in a robot, and other characters describe the ghost as the other ghost's sister.

Dug through the game's script to find what you're talking about, but there's no mention of that character being called "sister." They are only ever described as their cousin, and all the ghosts are described always in gender-neutral "they." But Mettaton definitely reads like a tranny metaphor regardless, with lines like "I can finally be myself" and other dreck.

Everything about this show disgusts me on a deep, personal level. It's basically a distilled, pure vision of everything and everyone wrong with Western civilization and the strongest possible argument we will ever have for book burnings (or in this case, a highly advanced virus developed to hunt down every copy of this travesty on the internet and delete it).

Off-topic, but a virus like that probably wouldn't be too hard to code if you knew what you were doing.

Man I really feel like Steven Universe was originally someone else's concept but Sugar somehow got her hands on it and has been slowly rewriting it. There's such a stark difference between things in the first and current seasons it's hard to believe they're the same show.

The first season was a monster-of-the-week show with the occasional "dungeon" to break things up, the fusions were more mystically (the giant temple, Opal's look, and even Sugulite resembled some sort of ogre. Vs later fusions that looked like faggy magical boys and obviously toyetic designs), inclined and there was the plot hook of corrupted gems becoming monsters.

I don't really have any proof that's concrete but I can't think of any other real reason why the show would take such a hard left turn in style, storytelling, and flavor.

Man, all that original shit was to sell the series to CN, they dropped it because they got far enough along to run with the series Silver and her gender fag friends really wanted to make.

There was always that meme of SU being like Transformers but that got dropped hard

Only problem I ever had with Houseki no Kuni was the shitty translation that it got from reddit after the steven universe fanbase found out about it.

The worse part the official translation advertises it as “if you like SU you’ll love this”

I still can't believe how much they enabled that tumor to infect it. How do you fuck up that badly?

I'm not saying it's ripping something off, because if I were I'd be citing Legend of Mana for the larger amount of similarities.

No I'm saying that SU's first season was the last remnants of whatever the show was before Sugar potentially reworte it into the clusterfuck it is today.

That would just turn me away.

>What did Rebecca sugar mean by this?

It means she has absolutely no fucking clue what masculinity looks like.

If she doesn't, then how come she inverts it every time?

Sorry. I was giving her the benefit of a doubt.

I hope you aren't saying that cuckime is manly.

That may be edgy, but it's 100% better than her below-Cal Arts bullshit on tv

They only put that for 2 volumes, after the 3rd they removed it.

Becky Sugar said that was masculine?

It's true then that excessive sugar will kill you

Is it finally over? Was this the end of the trainwreck? I watched it because it was allegedly the end.

They actually put some effort into animating it.

It's also noteworthy it and the previous 3 episodes were written by totally different people than usual. Meaning not even Sugar or Quarty were even involved at this point.

> wikis stating that the show doesnt even pull in half a million views at this point

I hope it's the fucking end.

> "over the last many years of working really hard to do this."

> "working really hard"

…I call bullshit. You storyboarded worse than fanfiction.net writing and sent it to korea, who did all the hard work. Lost interest, and didnt even have much say in 90% of the show, the show went all over the place because you didnt even manage it, and the release schedule was pure ass.

>one more season and a movie

I hope that season is cancelled and the movie is put in limbo.

The way this episode ended and the way it was written seems be have been done in a way that if they ended it here there would be closure.

Animation was also unusually decent. Which is usually a calling card that they're doing the big finale. Lots of mediocre shows suddenly whip out the skills in the last episode.

I'm praying that the season and the movie are just things they have on the table because of contracts, but never actually do them. The show has lost all its popularity at this point. Even with the tumblrites.

that second one is great.

It's a pretty common trope for shows to start off with a monster-of-the-week formula until it's built up enough popularity to raise the stakes with reoccurring foes and develop more of a continuity.

Sugar wasn't involved in most of the first season. She was still working on Adventure Time. She came up with the show's skeleton but it was up to the rest of the crew to run things at first.

They hired a guy who's known for doing that kind of sweeping shot. It was all hand drawn and literally the only thing he animated for the whole show.

Thanks for reminding me that I need to go back to my Twin Peaks.

>I'm just describing what's very blatant in the game.

Because gamers are faggots.

Early SU was Transformers meets Sailor Moon. Monster of the week, training to get stronger, unlocking new powers and fusions to fight stronger enemies, with a mix of feminine insecurity as the character arc hurdle to overcome. They were superheroes. It was in the fucking theme song: "we'll always save the day"

That's why all the Gems could summon weapons, which was initially described as being something that is drawn from within, something quasi-spiritual which is intrinsically linked to the emotions and personality of each Gem, and why the earlier plots revolved around them needing to be strong and Steven needing to train in order to fight alongside and support his family/friends.

Later Steven Universe is just navel gazing insecurity porn where all the neurotic writers and staff members forcefully self-inserted and attempted to live the quirky, whimsical hipster lesbian lifestyle that they always fantasize about. Instead of being about fighting, it was about talking and lecturing their way past their perceived enemies. Everyone and everything that opposed Steven and the Gems were just poopy head bigots who needed to be put in their place by woke post-modern queers with anxiety and daddy issues.

I think the only show that successfully showed the heroes finding ways to defeat the villains without killing them was Monkey.

I hear that they managed to snag a Disney animator for the last episode.

He's young, so I don't think he'd recognize the style. Ironically Rebecca sugar would create the polar opposite of that. Johnny made a cartoon that accidentally attracted a fanbase he hated, to the point where he made a point of separating himself from it. Sugar made a show that attracted a similar fanbase on purpose.

I guess they're just ignoring Mission Hill now…

Too old and it wasn't doing it for the asspats/fapfuel for the writers

But it won a GLAAD award back in the day. So the whole narrative of SU being the first animated show to get one is bullshit.

Not hot enough.

>source of article

and it's not worth reading.

God that show was so good.

Of course they are. Mission Hill is aimed at an older audience and the characters were designed as a realistic (though comedic) depiction rather than a glorification. In other words, it wasn't designed to subvert children.

Maybe it is the dead, soulless eyes and faking human emotions and reactions part?

I dunno man Jenny still seems more human and genuine than Rebecca Sugar.

A little spray on latex can do wonders.

Probably not for Rebecca Sugar.

She needs to grow out her hair and get smaller glasses, that would actually make a huge difference.

Pink Diamond represents Lucifer who rebelled against the Trinity Godhead, which the Diamond Authority stands for.

Lucifer held special station over Earth as the Morning Star(Venus) before his downfall, much like how PD held dominion over Earth.

Lucifer decided that humanity did not need God to rule them. PD decided that the Diamonds needed to leave Earth alone.

Lucifer becomes the deceiver, or Devil, to convince Adam and Eve and other angels to rebel. PD becomes Rose Quartz, and convinces humans and other Gems to rebel.

War breaks out in heaven, resulting in the Devil being cast out with his demons, bound to the realm of the Earth. Rose Quartz and the Crystal Gems are left behind on Earth.

PD's Earth colony was established 6,000 years ago. Biblical Chronology places the rebellion in Eden approximately 6,000 years ago(give or take from our current year).

You shut your whore mouth.

Though I don't super the show it had a fantastic faux 1930s modernist futurism and really good character design for XJ9.

It's too bad we won't get any cartoons willing to try out different art styles like that again.

Try capable of. Animation is much more of a craftsman's art then Id say anything else. Its carried from generation to generation. And I can't explain what happened but something in the 2008s just nuked the whole generation.

SU-tier stuff? That's like Lizards emerging from the water again.
