What are some good fantasy comics out there? Preferably stuff like Tolkien with orcs, elves and dark lords, but anything else is welcome. Are there any good DnD comics?

Roger De Vito Dungeons and Dragons is pretty good, have a go:

There's Bone, it starts out funny, then becomes epic. Hal Foster's Price Valiant is an old classic with gorgeous art. Cerebus The Aardvark starts as a Conan parody then goes on for 300 issues while the writer loses his fucking mind. Groo the Wanderer is a vastly underrated book by a master, Usagi Yojimbo is another masterwork often skipped because it's a furry book. Last Of The Viking Heroes, Poison Elves, Ghita of Alizarr.

The Elric graphic novels are good.

The Courageous Princess is like Princeless if it wasn't shit written by a cunt and drawn by a shit-flinging monkey.

If you don't mind straying into manga, there's Berserk, Vinland Saga, Aqua Knight, Lone Wolf and Cub, Vagabond, The Rose Of Marseilles, Slayers, and Orion.

Online, there's Al-Rashad:

And Elfquest:

That's a pretty good post, anon.

Seems like a good place to gauge opinion. What do you and everyone else prefer in regards to Bone? The original black and white collection or the individual colored volumes?

I have the complete edition in black and white. Enjoyed it but I feel as if the charm of the story is a little lost without color.

This D&D comic was pretty good and rather funny from what I remember.

Unfortunately it was canceled and never got a proper conclusion.

I forgot to pimp Den.

Classic Heavy Metal story, hallucinogenic colour, naked bald buff guy jumping around punching lizardmen with his cock and balls hanging out, what's not to like?

God, I love Richard Corben's art. He did a cool fantasy adventure starring Sinbad the Sailor for Heavy Metal, too, with Jan Strnad.

The comic's garbage now, but it wasn't too bad awhile ago. Rich has the same problem Roosterteeth has in that he's talented at humor but insists on being dramatic which he obviously isn't suited for (see the meandering bloated plotting).

I have vague, but fond memories of the original Forgotten Realms comics. My friends were bigger fans than me, but there was a centaur and a dwarf who were battle buddies, and the dwarf would ride the centaur and throw darts…

Yes, Elrod of Melvinbone is aweseome.

I'm enjoying Scales and Scoundrels right now. Orcs, dwarves, etc. The main character has some sort of draconic lineage and is a classic rogue/thief type. It's lighthearted and fun. Color work is gorgeous. I can see how the art might not be for everyone, but I like it, particularly keeping in mind that it is an all ages book.

File: 9479b8a268b1052⋯.jpg (352.23 KB, 1159x1650, 1159:1650, 370931._SX1280_QL80_TTD_.jpg)

I read first two tomes of Dwareves and it's pretty good so far. Art is absolutely great, stories are solid, but dialogues do get a little bit edgy at times. What might be off-putting to some is that Dwarves live on surface and have a more of a blacksmith-highlander-warrior society instead typical blacksmith-miner-warrior.

Each of the books told completely standalone story with brand new characters. First one was about a common dwarf fighting his way to the top of the society. Second was a story of a dwarf assassin/thief who was putting together a heist to steal a legendary treasure.

You weren't kidding about the art - coloring aside it's pure tumblr. Premise does sound interesting enough to give it a try.

Comics vary between decent and great. In either case they much better than Moorcock's books.

>Preferably stuff like Tolkien with orcs, elves and dark lords

The story about the mankind is pretty grim and sad. The art is ok and little bit dull but it's way better than the jewish art.

Is Battleaxes any good?

I asked about it before, but the thread was deleted for "not being a storytime".

I read it after I have seen it discussed here once. It's only four issues long and can be easily found just by googling, so you should read it yourself and make your own judgement. I think it is shit. Closest comic to it is Rat Queens, but with a dash of elements from Conan. Battleaxes is not as bad as Rat Queens, but not much better either. There is no hipster shit in it, plot is slightly better, but characters are about as annoying.

I assumed that Hellboy, B.P.R.D. and their other spinoffs are popular enough to not be mentioned. Besides, Hellboy's genre is hard to pin down, it is an odd mixture of fantasy, horror, and weird fiction.

Dark Ark is a pretty interesting ongoing series. It is a story set during The Deluge from Genesis, except it follows the second ark. In addition to Noah's Ark ordered by God, Satan ordered his own ark from one of the sorcerers who served him. Second ark was built to save various monsters from God's wrath, and if second ark survives, sorcerer will be released from all debts he owes to hell.

File: bb3d9665f44b1fb⋯.jpg (1 MB, 1988x3056, 497:764, Head Lopper 01-015.jpg)

I decided to finally read the first volume. It is pretty good, and simple art style work very well for the action and authors do not get lazy with it. It is sort of like LastMan in how a simple style is used to its full potential in showing motion and flow of action. It's also nice to get an old protagonist for a change.

My only gripe is this page. Why would they leave the head out? Panels 2 and 3 would work much better if full monster head was in them. Panel 3 especially. It could basically just be replaced with a solid color filled panel with word Chomp, and it would achieve the same effect.

Another thing I appreciate about Head Lopper is ditching the standard release model. More independent creators should experiment and find what works best for them, instead of slavishly sticking to 20-30 pages a month, and have delays and hiatuses.

The art style is a bit too cheap for me.

Sooo from time to time i hear people bring up battle chasers, was it ever any good?

>>957826 (OP)

Two new recommendations.

Sword of Ages is basically a mixture of Arthurian myth and Starwars, but tech is basically magic, and king Arthur is a girl raised by magical Sabre tooth tigers and monks. It started recently and is only on second issue. It is authored and drawn by Gabriel Rodriguez, who was also the artist on Locke and Key.

Other one is Valan the Outcast. It is a decent book, but nothing groundbreaking. Just a pulp adventure story, with tone somewhat similar to Conan or Fafhrdt and Gray Mouser. Main character is a former king who is now an undead. He is on a quest to retrieve his soul back from a necromancer who killed and revived him. There are two volumes total.

Art is all over the place, and it fluctuates between good and lazy. Pictures are the best and the worst of what you can expect from it. Book also has some nice alternative covers.

It above average at the very least. Art is very good, and writing is competent, but it has some mildly annoying elements that were common in late 90's/early 00's comics.

You should have bumped with some recommendations.

Wasn't Slaine having some "mommy issues" or some shit back in 2016 ?

Sometimes I wonder where does Pat Mills comes up with shit like that

>Sword of Ages

It's a miniseries that's not on a monthly schedule because:

>It is authored and drawn by Gabriel Rodriguez

It would be better off as a graphic novel. Most of creator owned books would probably be.

I prefer it in black and white, but that's just my bias. Originally, I read Bone in black and white and grew up reading more European and Japanese books, and both of which are commonly black and white. Bone's art style works well both in full color and b&w, so difference is only superficial in this case.

Color is better.

Seems nice, I'll read it tommorow

I'm curious.

Not >>1000556, but Orc Stain is an entertaining books about orcs with some interesting ideas and very good art. Action and spreads looks especially good. These pages should give you an idea of what to expect. One thing that might bother some is that not all orcs are green hulking mountains of muscle and some are very goblin-like. There is also a lot of dick jokes and crude humor involved.

Main character is a one-eyed orc marauder who has an ability to spot and exploit weak spots. Book is about his misadventures as he is trying to get by while staying under the radar of the rising orc warlord's forces.

Unfortunately, there are only 7 issues, with #7 being a first issue of a brand new arc. Issue #8 has been in the works for about six years now. If shit like that bothers you a lot, just stop at #6.

I would recommend it myself earlier, but for some reason, I thought that it was recommended already.

Also recommend Mighty Morphin and Go Go Power Rangers. To me it hits a lot of fantasy elements. Group of heroes fighting giant monsters. They use swords and bows and hand to hand. The villain is an evil sorceress who can summon monsters.

They have their own sub-category.

I'm digging the comic. A some QUALITY in a few pages but it looks great where it counts so I'm willing to slide. Thank you anon.

That's a bit tenuous, by the same logic Thor would qualify as a fantasy comic.

>One thing that might bother some is that not all orcs are green hulking mountains of muscle and some are very goblin-like

To be fair Orc and Goblin are just different names for the same creature in the Tolkienverse. It was D&D and WoW that defined that Orcs should be giant green baras and goblins should be small fodder enemies.

Gave all the ones you linked a quick look, Al-Rashad was the only one that really grabbed me but man do I like what I'm reading. Thanks anon

Few notable mentions. Witcher, Elves, Fables, Saga and people mentioned D&D, but there's also another comic from DC titled AD&D, those are two completely different comic series.

Fables gets worse towards the end and has it's one infamous (((tough sons of bitches))) moment. Saga is a 17 year old's shitty traced over comic. The Witcher comics are okay but the third one is horrible in every sort of way.

I don't think it's ever been translated into English, but there's a comic version of Wolfgang Hohlbeins Chronik der Unsterblichen (Chronic of Immortals).

It follows the story of the vampire Andrei Delany throughout the ages. As far as I know, the later chapters take place in the modern world, but the first few ones are set in medieval eastern Europe and have a strong fantasy vibe.

The artwork is quite good, too.

If any of you can track down any scans of the German version I'd be happy to translate them for you.

Looks pretty nice, have a link?

No, sorry. I looked for some scans earlier but didn't find any.

Has anyone read Monstress? I kinda like the first volume of it, but I'm trying not to like it too much in case it turned to shit later.

It's sorta fantasy I guess, but I'm not certain where else to ask.

Does anyone remember a comic that told the story of a woman who rescued a village's popular hunter/warrior, won his heart by refusing to be seduced by him, and then when they grew old the guy was killed by a rival tribe attacking the village while the warriors were away. The lady entertained them and got them drunk until the warriors returned and killed them. Always thought it was a neat story, just can't remember where it was from…

Could any one recommend some really gritty 80's style series? Think like Judge Dredd of the era but fantasy. Dark, grimey and all sort of weird monsters lurking every corner.

Well, Slaine suggests itself. From the same magazine as Judge Dredd, high points about the same era, shares a few creators, kind of like a sleazier Conan, based on Celtic myth.

Apart from that, maybe Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, Frank and Brutal from Phantastique, Kull, Solomon Kane, old Conan comics, and Den.

Across the water, I'd say Lone Wolf and Cub, Berserk, and Claymore.

The Goddamned, it's about the wanderings of Cain on the early earth and the punishment that befell humanity after they became sick fucks.

This is reminding me of a series I saw posted on here a long time ago, but I can't for the life of me remember the name.

I'm pretty sure it was based loosely around the four horsemen of the apocalypse thematically, with "death" being the main character. Lots of betrayal, and people going crazy, and it had like 9+ volumes, maybe more that weren't translated or something, or it might have just ended, but it was good and it's driving me crazy not remembering the name. The early volumes follow him and his brother as kids with a wolf mom or something if that helps at all…

Thorgal and Elric.

>No one recommended Mercenary yet.

It is a good old school, pulpy fantasy story, but focus in clearly on combat and the world rather than plot. Art is great, and author's post scriptum at the end is always an interesting read.

File: 96145781cb8f62e⋯.jpg (1.53 MB, 1920x2650, 192:265, ARAWN.jpg)

I recently read Arawn. It's good pulpy fantasy. It's a story of a bastard with mommy issues becoming a god of death and revenge. His magical talking cauldron is probably the best character.

Comic borrows a lot from ancient legends. So there is rape, murder, trials, prices to pay, and so on. Welsh and Celtic ones seem to be the main influences, so it has some similarities to Slaine. English translation is kind of clumsy but not horrible.

Was that a European comic? Could you describe the art style or years it could be from? Is it fantasy, urban fantasy or some other variation?

I would, if I could find it anywhere online.

I second Arawn. It's short yet gives a lot of story. The art is great, and the brutal Viking atmosphere is nice. I'm envious all the characters in the comic are able to get swoll and fit without going to the gym.
