Have you seen my thread about Hofstadter and "I Am A Strange Loop"? He's done some really interesting thinking on the idea of consciousness itself, reaching to a very far out point. He make some statements that it's really hard not to just knee-jerk away from, but he's got a solid foundation to his mode of thought. "I Am A Strange Loop" is far more accessible than GEB; it's not written like a game, or a puzzle, but a man's simple telling of how he thinks thought works. It's pretty deeply moving in parts; he, at one point, references his dead wife and how that influenced his thoughts about consciousness. Strange loop, indeed.
