Krita is fucking amazing. I tried it like a year or so ago and hated it, then tried it again a few days and and it immediately became my favorite program. They really have been improving a shitload.

A year ago it barely worked on my high-spec laptop but now it's great. It's come a long way. I can't wait for animation to be integrated (I've tried the beta but it seems to make it run a little slow again for me).

Some of the recommendations are terrible.

>Office Printer Paper

Just get a sketchbook at your local art shop. It's cheaper and it's meant for drawing unlike printer paper.

>Electric Pencil Sharpener

The better and cheaper option would be a small metal sharpener that you use by hand.

>Huion

It's not as reliable as Wacom, but then again Wacom is expensive as fuck.

>No eraser

Sometimes the wood pencil erasers are absolute garbage. Get a reliable polyester eraser and/or a kneaded eraser.

>Just get a sketchbook at your local art shop. It's cheaper and it's meant for drawing unlike printer paper.

There is no sketchbook paper that is anywhere near as cheap as printer paper. However I agree a sketchbook should be on there anyway.

>The better and cheaper option would be a small metal sharpener that you use by hand.

I don't know, I've had bad luck with them, my electric sharpener never fails.

>Huion

While I have an Intuos 5 large that I enjoy very much, I've used a Huion and they are actually quite good considering they're 1/3rd of the price.

>>No eraser

This is mostly a suggestion for a very very beginner whose work will not be worth salvaging in most cases.

>school-tier notebooks

Don't use lined paper fam, printer paper is cheap.

>palomino manual sharpener

Nothing wrong with that but maybe try sharpening a pencil manually with a knife or something. I just started doing that myself-it's actually pretty comfy and you can shape it to your liking (I usually leave the lead a cylinder shape and begin to draw with that, it eventually turns into a point on its own).

>palomino blackwing and papermate mirado classics

Blackwings are overpriced meme-pencils; I'd just use USA Gold or whatever low-cost brand you can find and invest in real charcoal pencils.

If you plan on getting the Huion Giano It'd probably be wise to wait a few days/weeks/months until it is available on amazon before getting it, then I think you'd get free shipping costs so you avoid having to pay an extra $20 something

 No.2307

I'm pretty much convinced at this point, but on the topic of Amazon, is there even the vaguest idea of when it could end up there?

While getting free shipping would be nice, I've been putting off buying a tablet for far too long, and I'd rather not wait another month or three before it ends up there or worse, have it end up getting a hefty price increase in the process.

Had an idea for a comic, decided to learn to draw.

Funny enough since I've started learning (3 years ago now, art is just starting to look halfway acceptable) my writing has significantly improved and the concept for the comic has completely changed.

Originally it was about a zombie chick walking around a psychedelic wasteland and completing random tasks. It's currently a comedy about a dude who looks like he came out of Stalker in a desert wasteland killing ghosts and anomalies for cash.

My major struggle at this time is figuring out how to balance realism and stylization. I made the early on mistake of animu as inspiration.

Thankfully I've wriggled out of that hole somewhat by drawing noses and lips that aren't just a line.

Well I got it now but it don't work right. I tried GIMP and the pressure sensitivity doesn't work. It's just one solid line. The opacity and size doesn't change no matter how hard or light I press. It works just fine in the configuration tool for the tablet. I tried Photoshop CS6 and it only makes a dot, then wherever I draw once I lift the pen off the tablet it creates a straight line from the first dot to the last position of the pen on the tablet.

Drawfriends, I am running a character design contest for cash money prizes. Visit /tech/ and find the thread on the SICP VN Projekt for details.

http://8ch.net/tech/res/365536.html

You can also email me for the contest rules: sicpvn@cock.li

Prizes are 10 or 25 dollars for a winning design, best artwork in the contest gets an additional 100 dollars. Looking for character designs to support a visual novel where you will do a class at MIT for Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs. The characters should be anime-style and for a be normal human beings, although anime style is very generous gives some room for different body shapes and sizes. Basically it is a visual novel about normal students and such, so Ben Bitdiddle shouldn't have elven ears or be a Lich aww yisss, Overlord-style. Anyway, I'm announcing this contest here to give you a chance to enter and win, email me with any questions and if you choose to enter, good luck!

Welcome back bud.

Have you considered maybe just saving up and making a game you could sell on steam later? I feel like a contest is a good way to promote an existing completed project but might be a rough way to start one up.

I think you have an interesting idea; why not build your game engine, have your story and gameplay ready and then just pay an artist to make assets for it when you're just about done? It probably wouldn't be all that expensive. For backgrounds you could just run pictures from google through a photoshop filter so you wouldn't even need to pay an artist for that (it wouldn't look great but as long as the girls themselves are "kawaii" as they say I don't think it'd be that important.

Think about it, man. For probably well under 4 thousand dollars you could likely make something akin to Sakura Spirit assuming you're doing all of the coding (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYP9SoWcbro) and you'd basically be guaranteed to make your money back and way, way more if it doesn't end up being absolute garbage, you'd just have to find an artist you're confident could deliver.

If you go this contest route however you'll be paying a potential hit and run mystery artist $300 for something you could pay an artist of your choosing $100 or so for and you have no guarantees what the top tier entry might be.

Anyway, whatever you decide to do, I love you.

Also you could check >>>/agdg/ out

 No.2488

>>2487

I know you're probably going for the anime aesthetic and this is more /co/ but I'm just using this as an example. There are tons of artists out there to choose from. All you'll needs is a handful of characters with a few high resolution stills of poses/expressions/clothing options each and a few larger pieces of unique splash art. Super, super doable - you just have to find the right person for the job, I just don't know if a contest on an unfortunately dying imageboard is the right way to find that person.

Traffic has supposedly halved since late last year :(

Glad to be back! This game will be free as in freedom, but thanks for your ideas, maybe we can look at reaching a wider audience thru a free game on Steam (if we can keep it clean enough for a wide audience). I will have to give it some thought after we have finished the project, in about two or three years most likely.

I was thinking of going up to MIT this summer to take photos for use in the VN. I also would like to get the FSF into the VN, but this is all just ideas at this point - the VN needs to be built around the actual coursework first and foremost. This will take about a year or longer from now to complete at a satisfactory level, and then the plot and the rest gets thrown in on top of it.

Thanks for the link, looks like good research material.

Yes, the contest isn't meant to be a recruitment drive for the artist of our dreams, its just for fun. If somebody should like to join the group then that is an added bonus.

If I could have any artist it would be http://valkyria.wikia.com/wiki/Raita_Honjou … I don't know how expensive his work is, but I'd consider saving up for a few years to pay him. I like FaustSketcher too. I don't have the kind of cash to pay professionals, and I don't know if it is necessary to involve them until we get the basic gameplay down with placeholder sprites.

I like >>>/agdg/ a lot, I check out >>>/lv/ too.

Going for the anime style, but I have a lot of love for all those characters! I made this WEBM just now from the intensely deep song that appeared in Symbiotic Titan. Try using a mix of RGB and HLS, you can change the lightness faster and it makes RGB a little less frustrating at first. (I wish I knew this when starting out.) Also, do photo studies so you can see the patterns of RGB transitions.

Unfortunately, I don't have any color tutorials. I tend to stay away from tutorials because most of them are made by people who don't know what they're talking about. (I'm no exception.)

As for the third picture, I just used vacuum lighting. White light and a black shadow. I often see people say color theory means shadows need to be cool, but shadows are actually naturally black and the temperature that they have depends on the environment, such as reflected light, ambient light, and secondary light. The addition I do in the RGB sliders is taking the light I want, estimating each slider's distance from 0 and adding it to the local shadow's color. In the example, R is very distant from 0 and GB are closer to 0 and pretty much the same distance, so I move the sliders on the local shadow up around that relative distance. If you noticed skin looks saturated when its own reflected light hits it, that's why, it's increasing the already high RGB values and keeping the low ones low. Knowing how much to add is something you learn from studying photos and such.

I strongly recommend studying with it a bit first before you use formulaic approaches. Knowing how to do it is fine, but knowing why it works is gives you a new level to work from.

How much did you charge?

How long did it take you?

That's actually a pretty solid animation for its purpose. The animation itself is very limited but I'm sure it still took you a lot of time.

Let me put it this way. It looks like you're working on behalf of a lawyer. Lawyers make a lot of money by providing a service that not a lot of people can do, you have to understand that you provided a service to him that not a lot of people can do, don't sell yourself short because you're hurting yourself and you're hurting the rest of us when you do so as well.
