8chan art ring:
Hey /loomis/! I this place has inspired me to start drawing and get good at it.
I still don't know what to do and their is a lot of information to take in at this time but I will take my time and get to know it.
but for the time being I will just draw simple shapes and see where that will take me (pic related).
And I will also post at least one pic per day in this thread to show how much I have progressed.
if it's possible I would like /loomis/ to critique any of my practices.
I won't mind if you find my practices terrible and have to be harsh on it. (I prefer if you guys are harsh with it)
thanks for your time.
and thanks for the inspiration.
Learning ART in the IRL
Do you go to an Atelier, an Art School or get any offline instruction at all? Share your stories, anxieties and questions here (instead of making several flippant individual threads that will die within a few days as usual)
Just visited the one local atelier today. The building it was in was a dump but the section dedicated to the Atelier itself was well kept. I was surprised with the youth of the students; I'd expected there to be a lot of old people but it looked to be predominantly people in their mid-20s so I didn't really feel out of place in that way. I'm looking forward to attending but I'm pretty intimidated by how much better the students there are than I am. Also I'm kind of an awkward guy so I hope I don't get kicked out for being creepy like that one anon lol.
Open-Source Animation Production Software OpenToonz Available March 26
Animation production software with expanded feature set employed by Japan’s famed Studio Ghibli to be distributed for free.
TOKYO – Japanese developer and media company Dwango announced that it has acquired animation production software Toonz from Italian developer Digital Video, with a forthcoming release of an open-source version containing the same feature sets as the Toonz Ghibli Edition developed by longtime Toonz user Studio Ghibli.
Toonz Ghibli Edition is a customized version of the Toonz software which was developed by the famed Japanese studio and has been used in the ink and paint, color design and digital composition process for most of their titles ever since The Secret World of Arrietty. In addition, OpenToonz will also include effects developed by Dwango that utilize its artificial intelligence technology, and a plug-in feature that enables anybody to add original effects to OpenToonz. The new open-source software – which is completely free to use and update – will be officially presented in Tokyo at Anime Japan, running March 26-27
“During the production of Princess Mononoke in 1995, we needed a software which enables us to create a certain section of the animation digitally,” Atsushi Okui, Executive Imaging Director, Studio Ghibli, commented. “We checked for what was available at that time and chose Toonz. Our requirement was that in order to continue producing theater-quality animation without additional stress, the software must have the ability to combine the hand-drawn animation with the digitally painted ones seamlessly. From then onwards we continued to use the software while going through major updates to make it easier for us to use. We are happy to hear that this open-source version contains the Ghibli Edition. We hope that many people inside and outside of the animation industry will utilize this software for their work. We would like to extend our gratitude to the staff of Digital Video.”
Digital Video will also continue to develop and market a Toonz Premium version at a competitive price for those companies willing to invest in the customization of Toonz for their projects.
With the aim of building an environment where research labs and the animated film industry actively cooperate with each other, Dwango hopes to develop a platform via OpenToonz to help the animation industry instantly apply various animation production-related research results acquired in the field.
“The contract with Dwango, which offers the Toonz open-source platform to the animation community, has enabled Digital Video to realize one of its strategies, i.e. to make of Toonz a world standard for 2D animation,” said Claudio Mattei, Managing Director at Digital Video. “It will be also the starting point of a new exciting plan to endorse the open-source business model, by supporting training and customizing Toonz for the old and new users. We are proud to share this path with Dwango and with Studio Ghibli, the renowned Toonz user since 1995.”
“It is a great honor for us to be able to release OpenToonz as open source software,” added Dwango Chairman and CTO Nobuo Kawakami. “We’d like to express our deepest appreciation to Digital Video and Studio Ghibli for their help and support We hope the high-quality software that meets the demands of animation professionals will contribute to revitalizing the animation industry. Dwango will also utilize OpenToonz in order to present its research and development results."
An OpenToonz demonstration and exhibition will take place at the Kadokawa booth in AnimeJapan 2016 held at Tokyo Big-Sight March 26-27. In addition, a business seminar entitled “Open Source Project of Animation Production Tool” will be held at the Creation Stage on March 26th. Nobuo Kawakami, chairman of Dwango and Shun Iwasawa, assistant professor at Tokyo University, will be on stage welcoming Studio’s Ghibli’s Atsushi Okui as a special guest.

[heavy breathing]
Does anyone else have trouble actually physically drawing? It's very difficult for me when I draw number 2 on each of these examples. I just did that with my mouse just to show you what it is I can't do so it's not an example of me actually doing either of those things because I cba to plug my tablet in. When I draw and I'm drawing to the left or clockwise, I can do it, but whenever I draw to the right or counter-clockwise it always looks completely different as well as wobbly.
I was just made aware of this "Famous Artist's Cartoon Course" through an artist I follow on facebook yesterday.
While it was freely available on this site: http://randomnerds.com/learn-to-draw-cartoons-with-the-now-public-domain-famous-artist-cartoon-course-textbook/ since June of last year (as well as some other places), it's divided up into 18 sections and at a cursory glance I wasn't able to find it "complete" anywhere else. For convenience's sake I've compartmentalized it into a single 271 page .pdf, uploaded it to my mega folder and organized these separate "lessons" into chapters. Check it out.

Just got my Huion WH1409. As I was trying to set up my sensitivity, I realized the package didn't come with a driver CD. Am I fucked? How should I proceed? Everything else seems to be included. Manuals, pen, wireless USB adapter, but no driver CD. Will support send me what's required? If not, could anyone here with the CD upload the files?
Questions :>
Hello o/
Im going to the art middle-school this year and i wanted to try Opencanvas 6 so i bought graphic tablet (bamboo MTE-450) yesterday. First time it just feels wierd but after hour of making circles and stuff, i tried to create something …
So i got some questions :
- Opencanvas 6 or Paint tool Sai ?
- Which tablet is best for animations/painting?
(Also my english is not perfect so exuse my grammar ^^)
Thank you.
Zootopia Art Thread
Pic is close to the style I want, but the style feels a little bit "flimsy" as Nick seems to have anorexia or something with his really thin arms. How could we draw it better so he's not a sumo, but he feels natural and not like a 35 year old vegan?
Also, feel free to post/create/etc. any Zootopia art.
Autodesk Sketchbook Pro
Hey drawbros, recently got an Android phablet made with a stylus in mind that comes with a stylus
Just wanted to shill a surprisingly powerful draw tool for Android bros who don't want to shill out for a draw tablet
I just pirated the apk file and wanted to share with y'all
If your Android device wasn't made for a stylus though you will have a hard time as the screen probably won't be accurate enough
8ch SICP VN Projekt Character Design Contest
Drawfriends, I am running a character design contest for cash money prizes. Visit /tech/ and find the thread on the SICP VN Projekt for details.
http://8ch.net/tech/res/365536.html
You can also email me for the contest rules: sicpvn@cock.li
Prizes are 10 or 25 dollars for a winning design, best artwork in the contest gets an additional 100 dollars. Looking for character designs to support a visual novel where you will do a class at MIT for Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs. The characters should be anime-style and for a be normal human beings, although anime style is very generous gives some room for different body shapes and sizes. Basically it is a visual novel about normal students and such, so Ben Bitdiddle shouldn't have elven ears or be a Lich aww yisss, Overlord-style. Anyway, I'm announcing this contest here to give you a chance to enter and win, email me with any questions and if you choose to enter, good luck!
Out of practice
What do you tend to do when you get out of practice?
I haven't focused on drawing or Art in a year. I was making some progress then too.
However, now I want to get back in to it, but i feel overwhelmed at where to start.
I remember going through a loomis beginner book when I was drawing, and I can't start at where I left off, as I suck right now.
So, what to do? Start back at the beginning of that book I opened a year ago? Focus on other ways at learning to draw?
What do you do when you get out of practice?
Damn
Nothing like superimposing your sketch over the reference to see how bad you screwed up. I feel like it's helpful to confront yourself this this sort of thing. I can see exactly what went wrong, where it went wrong and I can think back to when I was drawing it and discern why it went wrong.
Kind of a tangent, does anyone know any good guides for rendering in pencil?
Academic Art Books
Hey everyone! Wanted to share some academic art books that aren't super well known outside of classical ateliers. These are books I've either found on my own or have been recommended to me by my instructors.
The Practice and Science of Drawing - Harold Speed
Oil Painting Techniques and Materials - Harold Speed
The Practice of Oil Painting and Drawing - Solomon J. Solomon
The Training of the Memory in Art: and the Education of the Artist - Horace Lecoq de Boisbaudran
Artistic Anatomy - Paul Richer
The Human Figure - John H. Vanderpoel
If you have any more to suggest on the subject of academic art, feel free to share them.
Rendering
I feel like I got a decent grasp at getting the basics of things down, my biggest problem right now is getting past this kind of sketchy look and start rendering.
Every time I get a foundation down my mind just goes blank on what to do next, so any advice or readings would be a tremendous help.
Draw Divine Nibru!!!!
Let's get a divine Nibru thread going, here's mine on the left. Here are the criteria:
Things that should remain constant through all interpretations:
- The Halo on top of his head, it should be a solid halo-shaped object above his head. The stripes don't have to be there though…
- His Mouth is stitched shut, his eye brows are composed of stitches and the marks on his right and left cheek (think of them as warpaint)
- He is old, has only his left eye and has long hair
- A Necklace that's the letter M
- He should be carrying a spear but the design of the spear can change
PS. more info here:

concept art questions
I wanted to get into concept art for entertainment design and I had a few burning questions that I thought /loomis/ could have answers to.
>How necessary is practice and a preliminary portfolio before college?
>How necessary is life drawing to the field itself?
>How do I get gud at doing designs in the first place? Do I focus on line art and proportions first? etc.
>Is usage of 3D applications and photobashing acceptable early on, or should I practice challenging topics like perspective from the beginning?
I feel pretty confident in my drawing ability especially with how good I am for being in late-highschool, and I do know how to draw from my head and from reference, so I think my chances are pretty good.
I once talked to a rep from Art Center and he told me that I needed to get gud fast so I've started trying to pinpoint what I really need to improve and what qualities my work should have.
tablet
I recently got a tablet and installed several drawing programs.TPP Prepper Thread
Hey /loomis/, the faggots over at >>>/eternalarchive/ , /a/ , /tech/ and a couple of other boards are making a share project against TPP and we would like your help
The fuck's this shit and why should I care?
As you should you the TPP will fuck over pirating and copyright everyfuckingthing.
To counter it we started this, our plan is to hoard shit pre-TPP and then share it around with I2P.
==What do I do?=
We are still planning shit, so there are four things you can do right now
>hoard shit
To share it afterwards. Eroges, doujinshis, anything goes.
>download I2P
Might as well get used to it now
>Suggest shit and help in the dedicated bard
>spread it around
We need as many anons on this as possible, contact other small boards and chans.
Why I2P?
Because it's TOR on steroids. It's safer than TOR, it has more features(such as torrenting) and it's newer meaning that is isn't called pedo net 2.0 yet.
Why bother, TPP won't do shit
Odds are it will, but even if it doesn't there will be a new TPP. Companies are "losing money" with all these pirates, do you think they won't try to fuck us over each chance they get? We are now doing what we already should have had: preparing for the worst. Even if nothing happens next year, what's to say that it wont happen the year after?
Why /loomis/ ?
TPP will also fuck your art.
DeepFreeze-tan
So, /v/ has been trying to put together some artwork for a soon-to-be DeepFreeze-tan
Nobody has decided on a name for her, but this seems to be the most detailed work of art available for her. I was wondering if /loomis/ would want to help put together some concepts and artwork
Some features of her have been agreed upon that don't show up in this drawing
>8chan infinity symbol ring on the ring finger of one of her hands
>tongue piercing for smug tonguefaces
>Wields pickaxe when she's mining for salt
>Miner's helmet
Any drawing, no matter how good or shitty would be very much appreciated

art for the 23rd
Hello /loomis/, /operate/ BO here.
As some of you may know October 23rd is 8chans birthday, and hotwheels was interested in soliciting some art from the community to display on the homepage for that day.
So i decided that it'd be a good idea if multiple boards had their own thread to actively discuss this, rather than just having all discussion take place in that one /operate/ thread.
Now if you aren't an artist or anything, you can still help by posting possible ideas for the final art piece.
If you have any questions about this, then please feel free to ask them here or in the /operate/ thread here: >>>/operate/38319
Below are the rules for this contest:
rules
1.This should ideally be an original piece.
2.The 8chan logo must be included somewhere in the piece.
3.It being 8chans 2nd birthday should also be mentioned. The "2nd" needs to be emphasized, i.e., "happy 2nd birthday" rather than just "happy birthday"
4.photoshop mashups (simply putting the logo & birthday mention on a random image) , post screencaps, and other non-drawn low effort works are unlikely to be chosen.
5.The final piece has to be posted in the /operate/ thread.
6.The deadline for the artwork is October 23rd.
optional: You may include any board of your choosing to be featured alongside your artwork.
Note: Since this will be featured on the homepage, the larger the image the better.
How do I stop drawing anime or get serious.
I want to draw those cool illustrations someday but I'm going no where because I barely practice from life and just doodle all day.
It's weird because I know 100% that your animus only get better by studying from life but I still refuse because it's 'not fun'.
I mean, I'm trying everyday by doing a little bit day by day but I feel like it's not enough or it's taking too long. I only practice for 1 hour a day, three times a week (if I'm lucky).
I'm so fucking lazy I need help or some anon to guide me, is there like a work out schedule for artists?

purchasing art
general art purchasing thread is halal right?
I won't lie, I like picture related mostly for its political significance (muh vendee), but it's a good painting also.. The sacred heart, monarchist flag, the pose, all of the symbology is something I'd like to see daily.
Hence, I thought about ordering one of those painting reproductions over the internet. Kinda autistic, but at least it's not a touhou poster (planning on that too).
Obviously I know nothing on the matter, what sites are good, what price is best and what size is enough for it not to be microscopically small.
So far, the links I got are the following:
But again, I know nothing on the subject.
Ballet Russes - Nijinsky
I've been reading Nijinsky's diaries and i got somewhat obsessed with his ballets choreography since he really is one of the biggest landmarks in 20 century art although he doesn't get recognized in history books as painters who were inspired by him. I say that because there was clearly a progress in terms of art for early 20th century painters after they immersed themselves in the Ballets Russes, specially in Nijinsky's work. The colors, the paganism, the geometry of the movements, and so on, became much bigger themes in art thanks to his genius. There were already poets like Rimbaud (and writers like Tolstoy in some way) who had those themes but Nijinsky was the first to aggregate all of modern art in a piece.Danielle/Freya
Hey there /loomis/
If anyone has time, would you mind drawing Freya and Danielle holding up Father's Day cards? It's a gift for someone who created what these two are associated with
I guess this can just be a general Danielle/Freya thread, so throw out any art you like if you're up for it
>>>/operate/24007
Hotwheels doesn't care any more (I can't blame him), and doesn't even own the domain 8chan.co; for all we know, this site might not be here tomorrow.
I've relocated to https://hubski.com. It's not an imageboard, but it's not a traditional forum either.
Instead of having subforums or categories, posts are identified by tags. You can use existing tags or make up your own.
You can "upvote" posts but not downvote them. Moderation is user-driven and personalised: if you don't like a certain user, you have the options to hide his posts from your feed or forbid him from posting in your threads, but that's it. Posts are not deleted and people are not banned unless they break the law or post personal information related to other users.
The community is pretty nice and smarter than both 8chan and reddit. It's full of leftists, but in practice that's not a problem since they don't have the power to censor your opinions (and they actually seem surprisingly tolerant of different opinions).
Honestly it's the best forum I know of, so I'm letting you know about it. If you do decide to move there, it's best not to mention that you came from 8chan. There's an #art tag, we could use that.
a gift

ANIMATION THREAD
Post some of your favorite animations whether from an independent artist or a big studio. Post anything you might be working on or try doing some of the exercises here!Beginner's Materials and Education
As a beginner in particular I just noticed that I'm kind of ripping myself off by using "artist's materials". Why should I bother buying pads of newsprint paper I'm going to throw away or premium pencils when standard printer paper and #2 pencils are a dime a dozen and perform nearly as well?A beginner's doubt
I've read books that suggest that you start by practising with basic shapes (because everything can be broken down into those shapes) while others say that it's best to start by drawing from life (because life should be your teacher).Dear Board Mod of /loomis/
There's a thread going on in the 'solidarity thread' on /art/, discussing the future of art on 8ch. If possible I'd like you to participate on it as well. What kinda art is this?
Hi hi! After browsing a few threads on here, and on a few other drawing image boards I kind of noticed that it's hard to find people that really like art like this!
