 No.611

To develop a consistent style that can be used to draw almost anything and maintains a satisfying simplicity/detail level.

 No.612

I've been mulling over that too. I guess I'm not sure if there's any appealing styles that haven't been done before for my goal which is animation. I kind of like the 80's and 90's anime aesthetic but I'm not a weeaboo. I also kind of like the "Scott Pilgrim" style (never read the books but I'm aware of it at any rate).

I'm legit about it.

I have always liked it but my interests never seem to be produced by other artists. Thus I have decided to learn how to draw so I can produce it myself.

 No.685

File: 1426599591122.jpg (9.97 KB, 193x245, 193:245, 1318562278001.jpg)

I can't imagine what fetish you might have if you've really never seen any artists draw it before.

 No.686

Not gonna lie, originally I got into it because I wanted to make money drawing porn for people (yes I know there isn't a ton of money to be made there), but the more into art I got, the more I wanted to just see how much I could improve.

 No.687

>>686
some people make really good money drawing porn. I wouldn't do it myself, though.

 No.706

I want to become an extremely good animator who is also good at drawing.

 No.707

>>706
They're pretty much one in the same, man, lol

 No.722

I haven't really decided on an end game yet and that's probably something that's holding me back since I don't know what to focus on aside from grinding the fundies. I originally set a goal back in early 2014 to be good enough to be able to sell art at conventions by 2018 but that's pretty short sighted in the grand scheme of things.

 No.723

>>722
No worries, man. If you're good enough to sell art at conventions you're good enough to do a lot of stuff. There's a lot of overlap

 No.770

It's a little corny but I have always wanted to be able to tell stories.

And I feel like each of my stories requires something different to be told. Some I feel should be movies and others should be graphic novels. Even sometimes I want to tell a story with just a normal traditional work of art. My goal here is to get the skills to tell whatever story I want.

 No.798

Become capable of drawing concept art for projects, some people I want to work with think that you can just do things with no experience or forethought and get it done. I disagree and want to grind myself into a fine powder before I even attempt producing stuff to show to the world.

Unfortunately I generally suck at drawing basic shapes, it's still very early days though so hopefully grinding on Loomis will produce something acceptable.

 No.799

>>798
>Become capable of drawing concept art for projects, some people I want to work with think that you can just do things with no experience or forethought and get it done.

I'm ashamed to admit I was one of those people. I don't know how I gave myself the impression that I could just "do it" like that. Even after years of failure I just thought there would be some divine inspiration that would make me "get it" or something. Shit.

 No.870

Three separate ideas have been bugging me for years to be fleshed out and turned into comic form, it's fucking torture.

>>685
Not him, but sometimes artists draw my fetish with a different reason for liking the fetish, leading to it being only a pretty good fap, not amazing. For example, I would personally like to see consensual and realistic hypnosis porn, instead of all the kidnapping/brainwashing stuff that dominates the niche.

 No.874

File: 1428768917828.jpg (253.7 KB, 869x1248, 869:1248, 1417561178437.jpg)

I don't know. I'd just like to be good at pencil and ink drawings - no colour. I don't particularly want to draw comics or porn either.

I suppose level-wise I like this sort of style. I don't know what's it called but I like it.

Animation sounds neat but it seems like you need to sacrifice detail to be able to reasonably animate things. I wouldn't enjoy that.

 No.875

>>874
to be an animator you may need to sacrifice detail for the sake of logistics with regrds to the production but you have to 'understand' detail as much or more as anybody. Check out any of the features by the 'madhouse' studio to see some very good high-detail work. The movie Redline in the animation thread is a good example

 No.876

>>875
>you have to 'understand' detail as much or more as anybody
I get that - they need to know what's necessary and what works. I just don't think I'd find much enjoyment in that - you never know, I might end up changing my view on that.

I've seen a bit of Madhouse so I think I understand what you mean.

>Redline

It's been in my backlog for so long. I need to force myself to watch it next week.

 No.877

>>876
It's a dumb, fun movie. Really stylish but kind of brings to mind that 'wacky races' cartoon from the 70's, check it out some time. Other films like 'Highlander' and 'Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust' by the same studio really show off the kind of detail that is possible. Unfortunately yeah, if you wanted to produce your own short animation that level of detail isn't achievable for a one man operation.

Of course, if you don't like the idea of drawing the same character hundreds and hundreds of times to begin with regardless of what concessions you have to make or not animation probably isn't for you anyway. Nothing wrong with that, it's not for everybody.

I've heard good things about it. It's just time and me putting it off for no reason.

That's a point, though learning how to draw is repetitive in itself. Either way I'm getting ahead of myself, I need to be able to draw first before getting anywhere beyond that.

 No.959

>>958
That's true. Once you git gud you'll know where you want to go from there. Of course, that's easier said than done.

 No.1108

I got a story to tell. This big story I've been working on since I was like 11. Obviously it's changed cumloads, and will continue to change, but when it's all said and done

I want to be able to essentially produce it myself, whether it be through a comic, animated series, or whatever.

That sounds pretty cool. Do you dream regularly or did you just mean dream in a figurative way?

 No.1125

>>1117

The former. I can often remember 2-4 dreams a night if I don't sleep like three hours and get out of bed in a rush. It's probably because I involuntarily wake up multiple times a night but keeping a dream journal has also helped with recall. They're often too abstract for me to write them out in coherent sentences.

Do you really never recall any dreams? Because as far as I know everyone dreams and it's just a matter of how well you remember them. I used to have like one dream a week but I started that journal and did other things to help it.

A night or two ago I saw a dream where someone wrote a long post on why I'll never be a true artist and I should stick to doodling self-expressionist crap. I only now realized it was a dream and got confused.

And thanks, good luck on your journey too if you still read this board.

Yeah it's very rare that I remember dreams. However incidentally I just had a dream the other night where a customer of mine from the shop I work at stole from me and I beat the dog shit out of him.  No.1351

Art began for me as a compulsion so my end goal has never been very clear, I kind of just kept pooping out drawings.

The stories of those drawings eventually matured so now I'll have to make them move and take actions somehow lest I end up wasting well over ten years of work.

The real joke however is that I'm self-learned and for a large portion of my life drew things from my memories and thoughts, not by directly copying what I see. As such, I have a very inconveniently skewed set of skills that I need to fix first.

Just need to keep going.

Already been drawing for a month. I use to draw a lot as a kid so it's going pretty fine.

 No.1448

It's hard to decide where I'm going exactly, but career wise, short term (as in for a few years), I'd like to do porn comics. It's not a lot of money, but it would be more about building up my comic ability and gaining a following–I would do colorist or line art jobs, but I actually REALLY like drawing porn, and it's good practice. Once I'm at a good cut off point–I have enough fans and I've been working long enough to know I can handle personal projects–I'll slowly feed into having a studio/business producing comics, games, visual novels, light novels, and MAYBE animations.

This is all very scattered thoughts and I am VERY open to changing my career goals; right now, I'm just focused on the basics. As far as the art level I'm reaching for, I'm trying to let it come naturally through studies of other artists and then trying to incorporate what I learn into my own style. One person whose work I admire is CassetteRecorder, so that's one of my inspirations–I decided to start learning how to paint because of them.

 No.1449

>>1448

The problem with drawing porn is that it's hard to make a "legitimate" career after the fact because even if you're not sheepish about tying your porn to your real identity your existing following you gained making endless porn comics will not likely overlap with any non-porn work you decide to do.

 No.1450

>>1449

>>1449

That's certainly somewhat fair, but my "legitimate" career is going to involve porn to an extent.

Part of my goal is perhaps to show that porn can be art, and that something with porn in it isn't inherently bad.

But, that's all subject to change. I've always loved porn since I was like…10. Masturbation and having sex isn't particularly that appealing to me (well, I mean, more then the normal amount of every once in a while), but the subject of sex in art is really, really fascinating. If I hadn't been an artist, I would've studied human sexuality or something.

 No.1451

>>1450

That's fine then, maybe. Some artists can be pretty successful integrating porn into their work. If you've ever read the Manga "Berserk" you know exactly what I'm talking about.

Man, there are a lot of people that want to draw porn here ;)

I have numerus goals, both long term and short. In the long run I want to be able to live comfortably on freelance illustration/concept art work. This goal is rather huge but lately it has started to look reasonable. Been able to get decent paying illustration jobs as well as worked on a few small games. It's not huge but to me it shows me that my goals are possible.

A shorter term goal is to just finish studying at the atelier I'm at (studying classical academic drawing and painting) and leave with as much knowledge and skill I possibly can. I have about 2.5 years left to study and then I need to get back into working full time as an artist (scary shit).

I've been thinking of applying for work doing board and card game art when I'm on break from school. A lot of that artwork was what inspired me when I was younger.

Right now my sort term goal is to just make more of my own paintings, even if they're not that good. I'm exhausted after studying 12 hours, 6 days a week at the atelier so when I'm home all I can do is cook food and go to bed. Need to make more time for digital art.

I also want to try and setup an online presence as an artist. I want to do demo videos and stuff but I just have so little free time that it's not easy to start something like that.

PS. the image is just a speed painting thing I've been working on before going to bed

Sick drawing bruh; there's an atelier near me but the roads get hazardous in winter-I'll probably start attending next summer What can I expect and how do can I get the most out of it, famalam?

 No.1801

>>1788

It depends a bit on what atelier you go to. Some are a bit more loose with the "academic" stuff while others are very strict with it. The quality of ateliers differ but they're generally good. It's worth visiting the place first to talk to teachers and students.

Often new students need to get accustomed to the pace of an atelier and that can take several weeks. There will be a lot of information your first term and I think the most important thing is to just try and learn one thing at a time. You'll be bombarded with new concepts that can be difficult to understand at first so keeping a notebook with you is worth it. Few people at my atelier take notes but I've found it really helpful to write down what you learn, the critiques you get and the questions you have.

When studying, I find it important to avoid the "autopilot" mode like the plague. It's important to be self reflective and think "what can I do differently/how can I improve my next drawing" when starting something new. The students that don't challenge themselves to do things differently, take risks and explore different approaches don't really learn as fast as those that do.

Generally, I think that if you take your education seriously, take some passion with you and use your brain, you'll get a lot out of it. These are the three things I notice that the successful students have that others don't.

 No.2298

File: 1455048727867.jpg (634.25 KB, 1080x1080, 1:1, Arreat Smmit final web.jpg)

>>2292

Album covers is a cool goal. I started my career doing art for album covers. There's a lot of good money there, cool people to work with, fun as hell jobs but there's some things I sure as hell don't miss ;)

The great thing is that there is a big demand for GOOD artwork and even decent demand for okay art (this demand also won't ever disappear, only grow). Everyone is in a band now and when you have 5 people wanting to put out something they poured their heart and soul into, they're willing to spend a few hundred bucks on album art (even more for bigger bands and record companies). It's money divided through the members and even small bands can pay you fairly well.

They're often exited to work with you and don't have huge expectations so if you make something cool, they often love it. Now the downside is that you're often not working with an art director, you're working with normal people. They don't always know how to communicate their ideas well and at times they want something that won't turn out well visually. Often this can be worked around but sometimes you just have to bite the bullet ( I consider it part of the job to help them realise their own ideas). Also, it may be a little chaotic becomes conflicting ideas among members can make things a little complicated. Now with bigger bands and record companies, they often have "a guy" that you'll work with that is either an AD or just one member of the band that knows what they want.

A lot of what you do is for their Spotify and Facebook stuff but a lot of band still print CDs. It's something they tend to sell at concerts and I don't think that will ever fully disappear. I know from personal experience that when I go to shows I want to leave with at least a shirt or an album :)

It's a good goal anon, I hope you make something of it!

Instead of going to college, I want to be able to practice my art skills full time, to do that I will either save enough cash so I won't have to work for at least half a year or I will find a passive income. When I am good enough to show off my art and when I have a good enough portfolio I would ideally want to get a job in a video game studio and get a career in video games but I don't mind doing work for other types of media companies until then.

I don't want to go to college and get a shitty job as a lawyer or whatever and there isn't anything that they could teach you about art in college anyway that you wouldn't learn by yourself eventually, this seems like a crazy plan to me and I'm sure if I told my family about it they would agree with me, but I would be 100x happier this way than working in a shitty job that I hate as a doctor or something for the rest of my life.

To be able to fully realize every single minute detail of the pictures I imagine, and to be able to tell a coherent story with them.

Basically I'd like to be able to draw things and not have to explain what it is people are looking at to them, unless it's supposed to be incomprehensible.

It may sound like I'm aiming low, but the level of detail I'm talking about trying to realize here is far from low.

Beyond that, I'd also just like to be "good" I don't know how to describe it since I'm new to the whole art thing, so I don't have any examples to post, but you can probably tell what I'm talking about. Like, detail and color that doesn't leave you guessing what the person drew.

I've gotten to the point where I can draw my fetish, and do draw my fetish.

But I've gotten bored on how easy it is to draw, even though I do like it. My end goal is to draw more challenging things, I guess.

I can't draw my fetishes without getting a raging boner when the drawing starts getting good, then I fap and don't feel like finishing the drawing anymore.

Weird, I've never gotten a boner while drawing before. I don't even jerk off to my own drawings because all I think of when I look at them is what I could do to get better.

Other people's drawings are fine, though, and I draw my fetish because I hope that other people who are into it might also draw it.

I'm not sure how much this will help, but if you're drawing your fetishes and you keep having to jerk off, try only focusing on the quality of the drawing instead of the content.

I hear this shit a lot and always find it so difficult to believe. I could understand if you just started and all your shit looked wonky, but if it's years later and you're not attracted to your own work why would you even bother with smut?

Had an idea for a comic, decided to learn to draw.

Funny enough since I've started learning (3 years ago now, art is just starting to look halfway acceptable) my writing has significantly improved and the concept for the comic has completely changed.

Originally it was about a zombie chick walking around a psychedelic wasteland and completing random tasks. It's currently a comedy about a dude who looks like he came out of Stalker in a desert wasteland killing ghosts and anomalies for cash.

My major struggle at this time is figuring out how to balance realism and stylization. I made the early on mistake of animu as inspiration.

Thankfully I've wriggled out of that hole somewhat by drawing noses and lips that aren't just a line.
