A few weeks ago I went on a walk innawoods near my place and saw this glorious old cottonwood covered in vines.

I immediately scrambled to get the vines off of it but after I did it was clear the damage was done. The bark under the vines showed obvious signs of insect invasion.

This tree's probably been here since before white man came and now it's going to have a miserable death at the hands of vines and bugs… Had I only found it a few years earlier.

Feels bad man.

its looking at natures ultimate beauty.

ever since man became sentient we gazed up to the stars.

i think it has to do with the ultimate goal of human progress.

you could argue human culure had its roots in stargazing because every society knew the movement of the stars (planets) and the moon.

thats why i love "2001 a space odyssey".

its a pity less and less people value space exploration and its even more a pity light pollution makes it near impossible to watch the stars in many areas

So I used to do a garden in the backyard I used to have. Then I had to move back in October. I no longer have the backyard or the garden, but I'm still gonna grow stuff.

My question is about a big lilac bush in the back"yard" of the place I'm in. Is there stuff I should or shouldn't plant around it?

I'm thinking specifically chiles and/or tomatoes, I don't think I'll have room to grow much else this year

On a month long woods trip, one week in, batonned my fave Mora chopping down a small tree. It broke at the tang.

For all the hype, I expected Mora's to be better than that.

Had to rely on a 3 inch Old Timer for the rest of the trip. If not for the backup folder, I woulda been fucked.

Now I carry nicer knives - my latest knives have been from Bark River. My main issue with it is that they fall outa their sheaths too easily.

Here's good place to shop:

https://www.knivesshipfree.com/

My fave design is not too common: sheepsfoot.

For me the biggest issue is weight. Too light makes it unusable, but too heavy and you won't carry it. Only full tangs.

I don't care if it's perfectly sharp or not, as long as I can use it. Only small knives Need to be super sharp. My sharpest is a tiny hard stainless steel Swiss Army.

I do baton, and will continue to do so, because I despise pungy sticks.

Were I to add another knife to my collection, besides a better axe, it would be a custom neck knife of some sort.

Bay leaves can be made in to a tincture that you can rub on the skin that repels bugs iirc

 No.1138

Always wondered this myself.

Something I've observed in my time /out/ is that I get bitten by mosquitos to a much greater extent than my swarthier, tanner, and older relatives. I theorize that there are individual differences which make one a smaller target for mosquitos which probably depend mostly on the weathering of your skin, but I've never seen any scientific studies on the matter.

All I know is that I've seen my cowboy uncle totally free of skeeters when I'm positively swarming with them, many times.

 No.1156

I've been leading canoe trips for the past 4 summers, and for the past 3, i've avoided using bugspray.

It's not too bad if you work during the hours of daylight, and get to bed before/in twilight, because that's when the bugs really come out, at least here in Canada.

Also, campfire smoke will keep them away. And you can avoid them by living in dryer areas, away from marshes, ect..

>>1138

is on to something i think, also I should mention a lack of hygiene seems to help keep them away.

In addition, the mosquitoes that annoy you a lot here, the ones with stripey abdomens are recent migrants from Asia, so the natives wouldn't have to deal with them.

 No.1164

Down in the south, the US military started doing these retarded ops (look of operation big buzz/big itch, there was a couple and I can't remember them all) where they would dump a metric fuckton of insects (like mosquitos, etc) for biowarfare tests or some shit. Long story short, they farmed up a shitton of insects and started dumping them everywhere. Thing is, they didn't die off or disappear, so some areas are still completely fucked because of it.

What I'm basically trying to say is that in some places, it's a lot worse now than it used to be.

Also, it's a lot warmer now than it used to be, so insects of more active. But fuck Canada and the arctic plains…….you fuckers have some seriously out of fucking control bugs flying around.

The idea about some people being less prone to bugs bothering them interests me. My father's side of my family seems to be impervious to it and so am I. My brother however seems to attract the fuckers. I'll be sitting pretty and fine watching him get eaten alive across the campfire. I was always told that it eating tons of garlic, which is something I do, makes your body odor repel bugs though, not necessarily genetics. Has anyone done any research on this? Anecdotally it seems to me like a common knowledge thing that some people just don't get bitten a lot and that makes it seem odd that I've never heard of a study about it.

Hey /out/

I usually come here to lurk and learn stuff about outdoor living since I'm a big fan of being outside and working.

Me and some people are currently working on a project where we are setting up a crowdfunded at the moment, to buy land somewhere in Canada (location/country not 100% sure right now but Canada seems like the best option right now since land is very cheap).

The idea is to build up a self-sustainable eco-friendly village out in the open where we can hunt/fish/work/build, well just do things that we enjoy doing outdoors. We have people with various skills and backgrounds and have been planning/working on this idea for over 5-6 months now.

Well so you get an idea of what you can do there: The plot we're currently looking at is in Ontario, Canada. Its 65 hectares (650'000m2) of land and costs only 16'000 USD and you can pay 7'000 and then 200 dollars per month until the whole 16k is paid!

It's not to far away from a pretty big town and as I said, outside in the open near a river and between 2 larger lakes.

This is a great place to experience canadian wildlife and beautiful landscapes so that's why i came here.

Would there be any people interested in join in on the project/help funding ? I'm not asking you to come along and live over there but it could be a great place if you would like to spend time each year out in the free (or a great getaway if the west turns to shit hehe). Well if you want more info on the project or just talk some about it I'll lurk the thread and could provide some sort of chat platform!

Thanks!
